You'll find that this is a Commonwealth/Pom thing....not sure about in Canada....but definitely the Indians, Sri Lankans, West Indians, Pakistanis, Australian, Kiwis...heck any country that plays cricket...will call the Poms Poms.

It may have once (a long, long time in a faraway galaxy) meant "Prisoner of Mother England" to describe the convicts in Australia.....but it is now common(wealth)ly used for the English.

All those Commonwealth countries I mentioned before will affectionately and derogatorily call the English "Poms". Poms or Pommie is now the universal commonwealth country nickname for the English.
