Las Vegas Shooting

It actually not that easy to do with a modern firearm, which is why you hardly ever hear of anyone using a full-auto in a crime (and when you do, it's typically one built as full-auto to start with, then stolen from police or the Mexican military):

Two points: first, the quora article you referred to references making a handgun automatic, not a rifle, which is what the Vegas shooter used.

Second, assuming the weapon(s) the killer used was the popular Bushmaster AR-15 semi automatic (or one of its variants), contrary to what you say they are comparatively easy to modify into nearly full or truly full automatic mode (which is one of the prime reasons they are so popular). Here's one of the dozens of drop in, plug and play conversion processes:

I listened to the afternoon press conference, where one of the speakers, not sure if it was the sheriff, said that if they were brought into two of the hospitals alive then you stayed alive. Though I have heard that people have died at the hospital. So kind of confused at his remarks.

Also heard over a million dollars have been raised in a go fund me account set up to help. Several hotels have opened up rooms to those family members coming in. To donate blood they are now having to make an appointment on Thursday.
The really exhausted looking guy with the gray hair? That’s the Sheriff. What he meant was that the wounded who were brought into UMC and Spring Valley (they were spread out over 5 hospitals) are still alive. Unfortunately some that were taken there were dead on arrival which is probably where you heard that some died at the hospital. He was trying to praise the efforts of the hospitals but it came out somewhat awkward and he had to clarify with “as of now.” I have seen the count bumped up to 59 but I haven’t heard where or the circumstances of this last death.

That's not a full auto, that's why he used the "full auto" with his fingers. That's a bump stock. Basically, it uses the recoil inertia to allow you to pull, release, and pull the trigger again. A true full auto, you pull the trigger ONE TIME and hold it down and it will continue to fire until empty.

That’s a bump stock like mentioned in the USA Today article. That’s not exactly a full auto modification, but it’s generally legal. Actual conversion of the firing mechanism to full auto is more difficult and illegal. There were some weapons that were relatively easy to modify in the past, but most these new weapons would require machining and perhaps gunsmith skills.

I heard that the Sheriff indicated that the weapons had been modified, but not exactly how.

I found some article saying that at least one of the weapons did have a bump stock, but apparently no conclusion on whether some of the other weapons were automatic.

A modified bump stock rifle was also found, which allows a gun to simulate rapid automatic gunfire. Law enforcement officials are still in the process of examining firearms to determine if they were capable of firing automatically.

There's a prayer vigil being held in my town tonight for victims. A lot of locals were at the concert, some were wounded, at least one was killed. No one I know personally, but one is a friend of a friend -a young girl who lost her life. It's sickening.

My question is how does a guy get 23 guns (assuming some are rifles) into a hotel undetected?

He didn't. 16 were found in the room. The rest were found at his home. Several were handguns. The rest could easily be stowed in ordinary looking luggage if disassembled. He'd also been there for two days, so that was plenty of time to retrieve more luggage and whatever ammo he was storing.

We are scheduled to fly to Las Vegas in a couple of weeks and right now I'm hesitating as to whether to go or cancel/reschedule. I know that logically it is still likely as safe (or unsafe) as any other vacation destination, but I feel so uneasy and unsettled and am having a really hard time imagining vacationing in a location where so many have gone through such unspeakable trauma and lost their lives or had them altered forever. It seems wrong to be planning restaurant reservations and purchasing show tickets at a time like this. Every time I check the news my stomach sinks, what a horrifying day and it brings me to tears to think of what those hundreds and thousands of people went through last night.

We're scheduled to run the Rock n Roll marathon next month. The starting line is right there at the Mandalay. We will be there with heavy hearts and I will probably cry for most of the race because that's who I am. But we will be there. We will run. We will do this for Vegas and the survivors. The shooter will not win. He will not force us to live in fear but instead encourage us to stand side by side with others as we all live.

I really don’t think this thread is a place for arguing about how to alter guns. Take the peeing contest elsewhere.

Last I had heard he had 16 at the scene and 18 were found in his home in Mesquite. (small town about 45mins from here). But yeah, that’s a lot to have in there plus platforms etc. to not to have been noticed. As a side note from my experience as a maid three, four days of no service would not raise any alarm bells especially if he was actually seen or heard from declining service. Staff would not go in that room without permission if he had turned down service so it’s not odd that they wouldn’t have noticed anything.

eta: News conference updated to 23 in the room and 19in his home.

AP reported the following a short while ago: note the section I bolded.

"Paddock had 16 rifles — some of them with scopes — and a handgun in his hotel room, according to Sheriff Joseph Lombardo. Two were modified to make them fully automatic, according to two U.S. officials briefed by law enforcement who spoke on condition of anonymity because the investigation is still unfolding."

Any more info regarding the person at the concert who was heard to say, "You're all going to die"?

Surprising that for all the time you spend online that you didn’t see the news that 23 guns were recovered in the hotel room.

I haven't really heard that much. The last I heard was on the radio where they said it was about 17 in the room and a few more at his home. It happened to be more. Big deal. But it's not that hard to figure out that he could just disassemble all of it and put it in luggage. He'd been there for two days so going back for more isn't all that hard.

One large duffel bag could have probably held everything.

I know nothing about guns, less than nothing so I had no clue guns could be disassembled. So, for me, it was hard to figure out. I’m glad I don’t know anything about them tbh

Not a peeing match, just a clarification.

As for your question, I would assume multiple trips. Probably took more effort to secure a room with that specific view.

Easily, by booking an extended stay and bringing the weapons (in disassembled form) in small batches over a period of several days. The guest traffic in the lobby of a place like The Mandalay is like Grand Central at rush hour, so some guy walking through it with a satchel size bag isn't going to attract any attention. Frankly, the bigger issue would be keeping all that stuff invisible to housekeeping.

I read something similar with regard to the Sheriff's statement of what was recovered. That's why I thought it was 17 in the room. However, there was still confusion over what the modifications were. One report clearly stated that it was a bump stock, which essentially shakes the stock.
