Our son graduated from college and got a job!!! We are moving him to Las Vegas, New Mexico this week end. He will need basic furnishings for his apartment. I have exhausted all of my resources and haven't found 1 person familiar with that town. If anyone could suggest some places he could look, we would appreciate it. Used furniture is fine, except a mattress set. Thanks for any help.

You could look up used furniture stores in the area. Thrift stores as well. Never heard of Las Vegas in NM. I looked it up.

We have driven through a number of times on our way from Denver to Phoenix. It is pretty small. Is he driving to get there or flying?

I ask just because we have had to move our son up to college, all by van, and have had good luck with some nice Ikea pieces. They are boxed, so putting them together on site works. There is one in Denver "on the way" if he is driving.

In doing a little research, there is a small college there - New Mexico Highlands Universtiy. So there should be a need to apt furnishings :)

Here is a furniture store in Las Vegas NM

OK - edit - Santa Fe is just over an hour to Las Vegas, NM - Craigslist might work. Also, Albuquerque is about 2 hours - TONS there.

Thanks for the responses. He is driving to NM. Ikea would be nice but there isn't one in our town and there isn't one in New Mexico. We will arrive later this morning and start checking things out. Looks like there may be a road trip or 2 to Santa Fe.

Thanks again:thumbsup2

There is a large Walmart there. There is a decent furniture store as well. I live about an hour away in an very, very small town. We bought bought beds there along with living room furniture and have been happy with it all. There is a pretty big showroom, but the furniture does have to be ordered which will take a week or so. I can't remember the name of the store right now.

Santa Fe has most big box stores, but specialty stores there are pricey.

My husband orderd some bookcases from IKEA and had them deliverd. The shipping charge was minimal

That was pretty funny..Ikea in NM (I've lived in NM a long time and LOVE Ikea and just went to my first one, in Phoenix, this summer). There isn't a whole lot of much in Las Vegas, NM or any other small towns in the state. Santa Fe and Albuquerque are his best bets for city-like ammenities. Frankly, for those striking out on their own for the first time, Walmart has quite a lot of decent furniture like tables, desks, chairs, etc. For soft goods at lower prices there are basic furniture stores everywhere and thrift stores. I heard a rumor that Ikea might be coming but can't remember if it was to Albuquerque or El Paso (where I am closer to). It's a whole different world out here...I hope your son likes it or can at least discover the good qualities of it.
(ps..thanks for reminding me Ikea is online..I need to check that out)

I just had to post because it's so cool someone mentioned LV NM. I am pretty sure in the many years on the DIS it's the 1st time I have seen it mentioned.
All of my great aunts went to LV NM for college a million years ago and it's where my beloved grandparents met.
All that being said- not much there and I recommend Albuquerque for any big purchases like furniture too.

So here's how it went down. lol The apartment he was supposed to rent was covered in black mold...not good. That really threw us for a loop because we had to leave for home in less than 48 hours. It was the week end (no apartment offices were open). His boss has only lived there a few weeks and didn't know too much about housing. Las Vegas doesn't have many housing options this close to college starting. He found a furnished "studio" apartment and signed a 1 year lease. It's not great, but it's the best we saw.

What we found is that the people are friendly and helpful.

If he finds something different next year, I will refer to this post. Thanks again.

I'm surprised at the mold issue. We usually don't have those types of issues here. I hope all goes well for him and he explores the state and surrounding states which have a lot of interesting things to do! Have him come down this way and visit White Sands National Monument, the Space History Museum and come when Trinity Site tours happen..then he can head over to Carlsbad and see the caves and bats. :) (oh and he can tour winerys and see the world's largest pistachio here also)
