Ladies: Can You Change A Flat? Mow The Lawn?

I can mow the lawn, check the oil in the car.

I helped a friend of mine redo our flooring in the house. A couple years ago, I put up bookshelves here in the bedroom. Built several computers over the years, only getting help if something didn't wanna cooperate....

I can change a flat faster than most men. I was (briefly) a rural mail carrier sub and one day I changed three tires on my truck.

I can mow the lawn, but the only time I did it was when DH was at the police academy.

I can grill, but don't. DH likes to do it.

I can do about anything I set my mind to. DH and I do all our own home repairs and remodeling.

I can change a flat.

I always cut the grass. DH does the weed eater and I cut the grass and weed the flower bed. I love to cut the grass. I find it relaxing, and I can always pretend I don't hear DH or DS talking to me. ;)

I hate to cook, so I rarely cook and never grill. I'm not good at cooking and I just hate doing it. Luckily, DH loves to cook and is great at it!

I can't change a flat, but I do have AAA... I can and have mowed the lawn, I actually love doing it. My husband and I don't follow "traditional gender roles." We both cook, we both clean. We both do yard work, we both paint, etc.

I know how to change a tire, but that doesn't always mean I can. Sometimes the lugnuts are rusted on so tight that I'm not strong enough to get them off.

I can mow the lawn, but my dh does it 99% of the time.

I can paint, but I don't do a very good job, so my dh doesn't usually allow me to do it. Especially trim, I've been banned from trimming, ever since I got purple paint on the ceiling :rotfl:

I don't know much about electricity or plumbing (actually, I know nothing about plumbing) so my dh handles all that.

DH does the grilling, but I prepare the meats and he just stands at the grill with a beer and a spatula and watches the meat while it cooks.

I guess we are pretty old school when it comes to gender type jobs in our house, but it works for us. We each just do what we are best at.

I can change a tire, mow the lawn, grill, kill a snake, and fly an instrument approach to minimums. Single ladies doin' it for ourselves! My mom is way more awesome than I am; she can practically build a house.

Things I can't do: child care. I wouldn't begin to know how to change a diaper, and I've never even held a baby. Never wanted to. I'd be terrified to hurt it. I'm impressed by people who can do those things.

Well, except for you, Dawn. ;) Are there some things that are usually gender specific that you just can't/don't do? I am having a party on Father's Day and feel a little bad asking my husband to do the grilling. I don't even know how to turn it on! I have never used a lawn mower. Never changed a flat tire. And I have never climbed a ladder! :guilty:
What things have you never done that are typically gender specific.

Gender Specific can't-dos....
.......Big noisy things freak me out... so, no chain saws. But I'll use the electric mower, and small jigsaw, sander etc.
.......Afraid the car battery will explode if I try to boost it myself (oops, it died because of gender specific issue...I left the headlights on a couple times) so, that's a job for superMan.
.....My dad can do/has done everything, so I try, but often need the voice of experience(ie just that innate sense that many men seem to have about construction) to give me the courage to try some home renos.

.....oh, and I definitely can't pee standing in front of the toilet...:rotfl2:
.

I'm so used to my DH being gone I can do and handle just about anything. Well, can't change a tire or kill a snake LOL. But no snakes in Hawaii and I have roadside service for that tire LOL.

There is only one thing no one ever thought to teach me how to do because it was just automatically assumed to be a man's job: I cannot grill. Not a bit.

I know the concept of changing a tire. I only had to attempt it once in my life and that didn't go so well, then again, it didn't go so well for my dad either. We had to call a tow truck -- the lugnuts were rusted ON...they were able to get them off with their air tools but it was physically impossible to get them off manually.

I have mowed the lawn in the past. I used the riding mower growing up. I attempted to use the push mower ONCE to do the lawn when we got married and unbeknowst to me, it was self-propelled (?) but I ended up not doing something right so did it the hard way. It took me forever & I told DH I would NEVER do that again...and I haven't needed to. I'm still not sure what I did but it would be the equivelant of having power steering and having it go out, so you had to steer without the power steering.

Grilling I could probably do but DH usually does that. We don't have a gas grill though, so it's charcoal & lighter fluid, along with setting it on fire. Not too difficult, altough if *I* have to do it, I would like to cheat and get that charcoal where you just light the bag & it takes care of itself. :)

Cut the lawn all the time. I do a better job than my DH :thumbsup2

i can grill with charcoal but not a gas grill. I cannot change a tire but the one time I needed to it was a woman who helped me do it! I do have AAA now. I mow the lawn but I do not know how to use the weed whacker. I typically take the cars in for service because DH is at work and I'm home. The one time I tried to snow blow I could not start the snowblower. I asked the neighbor for help and he scolded me for not having an electric starter on the snowblower. He couldn't start our snowblower either.

My sister, on the other hand, rocks - she asked for and received a chain saw for a gift. They have 3 acres, she does all yard maintenance, tree trimming, riding lawn mower, she even manages the burn pile and lights the bonfire, etc. She paints the front porch, stains the deck, chemically treats the pond, snowblows. Her DH travels quite a bit.

There are many "female" duties I cannot do either: sewing, making a pie, cooking from scratch (I cook but it isn't gourmet), arts N crafts are not my strong suit, interior decorating, nurturing children, growing plants (I have a brown thumb)....

I have successfully put the spare tire on my car after a flat 2X in my life. So I can do it. But now I call CAA (that's AAA only in Canada).

I mow the lawn often. But I just mow... I don't change the oil or the spark plugs or deal with the machine if it won't start up.

Now, any encounter with a spider.... dealing with that is man's work. I don't do spiders.

GF and I are both female, so we just have to muddle through life as best we can without a ... erm ... peenie between the two of us :lmao:

(er, that didn't exactly come out right ... :lmao:)

Anyway, we have a phrase for stuff in our house that are traditionally "male". We call it having the x peenie (well, not a peenie, but the other word). For example, GF is great at setting up all the wires for the TV and stuff, so we say she has the "electronics peenie". I do a lot of computer stuff, so I have the "computer peenie". The other day, I shoved my hand in the garbage disposal and poked around and managed to dislodge whatever was in it, instantly earning myself the "garbage disposal peenie".

You get the picture.

There are a few things for which no one has managed to earn a peenie. For example, car stuff. By default, I have the "car fluid checking peenie", but neither of us really are very good at it. The only person who has the "change a tire peenie" is AAA ;)

Life sure is hard without peenies, but we do manage ;)

I've always done "guy things." Grilling is my favorite kind of cooking (mmmm . . . meat . . . beer . . . good), I can change a tire, and even when I was married, I mowed the lawn with a kid in the backpack. My first real job was in the army, so I guess I've always leaned that way. I'm also pretty good at home IT/Audio visual type stuff. (I have guy tastes for entertainment as well, and even though I'm in my 40's, I still read comic books).

What I don't do very well are the female type things, like home decorating. I'm also likely to not wrap presents and I don't buy cards. My house lacks a feminine touch even though I'm a woman.

I know how to change a tire, just don't have the physical strength to do so! I can change a car battery though! Can mow the lawn, but the weedeater is a different story..ugh! Oh, and I know how to chang the oil...drive down to Kwik Kar! Works every time!

I actually work on cars for a specific oil change/Lube place that is rather Jiffy. I can do anything car related including tune ups, tires, oil changes, brakes, alignment, etc. Its not hard. I can also mow the lawn.

Throw anything at me. I will always give it a shot.

My DD-8 knows how to change a flat and change the breaks on a car. She is very interested in learning about it hands on. My son has no interest.

I cut the grass, shovel snow, etc.
I have been known to knock out walls and counters to "motivate my husband to replace it.
