Ladies: Can You Change A Flat? Mow The Lawn?

No, and no. The latter because I'm allergic to grass and will get a blinding headache within 5 minutes of being outside while grass is being cut. It sucks to have allergies, but it definitely didn't suck never having to cut the grass when I was younger. ;)

I also don't know how to put air in my tires. I don't know why, but I just never have.

I can, however, barbecue the heck out of anything placed in front of me. That only came about as a result of being on a marketing tour with my brother one summer that promoted 17 different BBQ-related products (including various grills)--we were grilling 5 days a week, so obviously I learned how. I love grilling now. :thumbsup2

I can mow the lawn (except we don't have a yard) but I cannot change a tire. I cannot even put air in tires. I am useless when it comes to cars.

No on changing a flat. Yes, mowing the lawn. I can do minor chores around the house. I patched a whole in the wall and sanded it down, then painted over it- stuff like that.

My DH or 40 years insisted (when we were both much younger) that I learn to do EVERYTHING he did because if he died I could take care of those things. That included all the inside and outside stuff, the cars, buying and selling a house by myself (he was in the wings but did not participate), handling insurances, etc.

I don't do any of it now, but I can and will if it ever becomes necessary. I would absolutely refuse to change a tire these days, but I would pay someone to do it. :)

I can change a tire, but have found if get everything out & started, some guy will come & take over for me.

With home repairs: I ask him first, then after a reasonable time, if it isn't done, I start & within 15 mins., he is there saying ".here babe let me show you how do do that right."

I can mow, if I have to, but I wouldn't dream of touching THE GRILL, as I would never be forgiven!!!

What really drives DH crazy though, is when I use something other than the "proper" tool, like a table knife as a screwdriver.

I can mow the lawn, but I won't go near the grill. I wouldn't even know how to turn it on. I've never changed a flat tire.I like to think I could figure it out,but I doubt it.:confused3 Oh and DH changes the cat box every week.:thumbsup2

I love power tools! The hedge trimmer is my favorite. There's just something about hacking at the hedges and making them just so. I enjoy mowing the lawn too. The lawn and the hedges look a lot nicer (and last longer) than the interior of my home most some days. Grilling, love it. I'll grill when its 32*degrees outside.

Changing a tire? Nope, but I could probably figure it out.

I can do anything that needs to get done. We had no brothers and there are a lot of women in our family. We learned how to do it all. I plan on making sure all of our children are educated in the same way.

ETA- I also can change a tire. In fact I changed my Mom's tire on her late 70's New Yorker when I was a teen. Where there is a will there is a way!

Well, except for you, Dawn. ;) Are there some things that are usually gender specific that you just can't/don't do? I am having a party on Father's Day and feel a little bad asking my husband to do the grilling. I don't even know how to turn it on! I have never used a lawn mower. Never changed a flat tire. And I have never climbed a ladder! :guilty:
What things have you never done that are typically gender specific.

I can't replace an engine or a transmission, but I can do general upkeep (tires, fluids, windshield wipers, gas, air filters, etc). I know how to mow, change a tire, hook up the DVD, use power tools and grill a steak.

My dad did show me how to change the oil. I decided that I"d rather pay to have it done. So technically I've never changed the oil.

I can do some guy things. I don't eat meat, so I never use the grill. But I mow the lawn (DH has allergies), I can use power tools, and I almost changed my flat tire once but I couldn't get the bolts off the darn wheel; I'd never done it before and I was afraid I was putting too much pressure on it. DH came and pretty much just jumped up and down on the tool. :rotfl: So I'll do that next time.

:lmao: At the bold. I am trying to think what is gender specific that I can't do. I can't change the oil on the car, or do car repairs. I can jump a battery, but so can everyone else...I think. Around the house? I can do pretty much whatever DH can, except carpentry. He is good at that. I can change out a light fixture, can't plumb. I have climbed ladders, painted the house when we lived in a ranch. Painted this house years ago and then decided that falling and killing myself wouldn't be worth it. I wouldn't like using a chain saw to cut up wood branches that fall down, but I could if I had to. I was the first born and therefore my "father's boy". ;)

I have never changed a tire or mowed a lawn in my life. is that a bad thing? ;)

One time I swapped out the propane tank and after the grill got going, realized that I didn't tighten down the connection enough. I reached underneath and turned the connector the wrong way, loosening it further. The propane leaked up, ignited and I had an 8 foot blow torch on spewing flames on my back deck near the rail. The kids were little and terrified. They were crying. They thought it was going to blow up. I had the oldest call 911, grabbed a metal chair, put it over my head,(like that would help) and hosed down the wood on the deck rail so it wouldn't catch on fire. The fire dept came and put it out. The grill was destroyed but the deck nor the house caught on fire. I figured that the fire dept would come with an appropriate fire extinguisher. They came with everything they had. Embarrassing.

I do it all.

It's all me. My dad didn't teach me when I was growing up to do it, unfortunately.. because I was a *gasp* GIRL. But, now.. I call with problems, and he walks me through it. Or, I google it. Mostly, I'm stubborn. No one is going to tell ME I can't do it.

You remind me of my sister's dh's cousin. She could probably build a house if you gave her the materials and tools.

She does it all as well. Last I heard she had ripped out the stairs to the basement and was installing new ones all on her own. She does have a handy dh but she did not want him touching the stairs.:lmao:

Of course hiring someone to do a job would be foreign to her.

I can't use the grill, don't even want to, I'm terrible at it.

DS11 mows the lawn (because he likes to).

Could change a tire I *think*, if I HAD to.

What I can do is drive DH's motorcyle and mine ;) Not at the same time though

My husband is a Soldier-so yes i change tires and oil, mow and trim, paint and fix, and grill-i have to or things would literally go undone fo a year

Sounds like you are a jack of all trades. I just want to say thank you to your husband for his service to our country. I'm sure it's hard for both of you.

I am the only one who does the lawn / trimming in this house. DH is clueless about such things.

I can change a tire (had to TOO many times - I really hate doing it). Dad made sure I knew how.

And a shout out for the farm girls on the Dis!!

I can drive a tractor and bale hay and cut and strip tobacco. I can also muck stalls :cool1:

Oh - DH does the laundry. :worship: It's a fair trade-off.

Yes, I can change a tire, mow the lawn and do almost all the grilling.

My dad taught me to change a tire when I was a teenager. I never learned to mow the lawn though.
