Ladies, are you EVER going to leave?? 10 days of Food & Wine fun! *NEW 1/29 PG 34*

I'm right there with you on your review of Sci Fi.....Great atmosphere, but the food, just ehh.
Poking around in One Man's Dream is sooo cool. I hope they manage to incorporate the artifacts somewhere else if they are to do away with it.
I'm making note of the Oct. dates! I'm just afraid that our fall break is going to be a week late.

:scared1: YIKES for it being so darn hot! CRAZY!!!

Sounds like you made the most of it and had fun anyway!

Hmmmmm, your SciFi experience sounds familiar to me :rolleyes1. All I'll say is stayed tuned in my TR ;)

WOW! You know we have never been to SciFi, I was thinking it would be fun for dessert only... I hear over and over the same message about the food... BUT bad service, that sucks regardless of the food!

Sounds like you had fun with Jen touring around DHS! I have not been to the One Man's Dream exhibit... I gotta get in to see that!

Tequila tasting.. sounds right up my alley! :rolleyes1

Oh we have a saying for "hot hot" days... "This is Africa Hot!"

I know that sounds stoopid... BUT I have to go ask my DH to remind me which movie this comes from -- it is a comedy, and for some reason it just stuck with us... I will ask him... It works particularly well in the AK. When... you... are... in... Africa ... :lmao:

At least it is Disboard friendly :rotfl2:

Hmm, I was thinking of putting Sci-Fi on my maybe list for spring but now...maybe not. My list is longer than days I will have anyways I'm sure!

Awww I loved meeting you!! You are an amazing person and I am lucky to call you friend and I was so glad with our many experiences!!!! I really enjoyed walking around One Man's Dream with you and watching the movie about Walt!!!

Toy Story Mania was too much fun and my arm hurt too LOL!!!!! I didn't beat you that bad, you held your own LOL!!!

Lunch at the Sci Fi...what can I say....the company was great and the food was okay...enjoyed the atmosopher...but the service...well it was bad enough that I won't be going back again for quite a long time.

Another amazing update!!

I went up the street walking through the shops – partly to stay in the air conditioning and partly in search of tank tops. I had only packed a few and with heat like this even the sleeves on your t-shirt were annoying.

Did you find your tank tops?

Do any old-school WDW visitors remember getting your orange or grape juice in the plastic containers shaped like the fruit? We had the orange container in our cupboard for a long time but I think my parents eventually threw it out.

I remember them from Hershey Park and other amusement parks. Sadly, I never went to WDW as a kid...:sad1:

Totally agree on Sci-Fi... mediocre food and service, cool atmosphere. I'm with you- take the kids, bag it otherwise.

I really, really hope they don't take One Man's Dream out before I get there in Sept. I can't believe they'd even think about taking out this one last place you can learn about the man behind the Dream and reality of WDW. :confused3

Tequila tasting, next up? This I gotta see!

All of the fun of the rides and shows, all of the thrill of meeting the characters, all of the good food and music, and all of us being here enjoying this forum started long ago with someone we never met. I think it would be a great disservice not to have something that reminds of us of that. I hope One Man's Dream stays. I appreciate it more and more the older I get. We all want to leave something special behind when we depart this life, and he left the foundations of Disney World. For people to forget the person who is responsible for them having this place - that's just not right to me.

I just read the Sci-Fi review from your dining partner. Sci-Fi is more for atmosphere than food for most, it seems. We've been there twice, and although we will go again, it's not way high on our list. We'll probably go to take someone new sometime.

Hope you had success at finding some tank tops. It can get stifling hot in WDW. ::yes::

I totally agree MeMom!

We had One Man's Dream on our "if we have time to kill" list and fortunately found ourselves not yet needing to head to Fantasmic but not enough time to stand in another line so we headed in.

I didn't realize that in all our planning, I had overlooked teaching the kids that Walt Disney was a real person :scared1: We loved it and were so glad we had that time "to kill"

First, don't be hard on yourself for not exercising on that super hot day! I don't know if I could ever picture my lazy self exercising on vacation! :rotfl:

I agree with you on Sci-Fi. My BF and I tried it in April and were seated in a car with a family of 4 in front of us. A mother, father, young boy around 3 and an infant and then my BF and I in the back. The place was pretty empty as we had an early lunch yet they still made us share a car. The food was so so. I'm definitely in agreement on probably not going back again :thumbsup2

I'm a tequila girl so I'm excited to hear about this tasting!

Bo!!! I feel like it has been forever since we saw him!!! I wonder how Chelsea will feel when she sees him again.

That burger from SciFi looks good -- too bad about the service! :headache:

"Holy mother blanking hot" :lmao::rotfl::rotfl2: There's a trip report title if I ever read one.

Hey Christine - glad you made it into SciFi. I love the atmosphere there! At least you weren't with the group with the long food wait!

Hmmm....your next title has me intrigued. Can't wait for more!:)

I'm glad we went too! :thumbsup2 The atmosphere is totally cool and it is a good break from the heat and sunshine. Unfortunately I think we caught it on a bad day in terms of service and that colored the experience.

Look for the next chapter sometime this week!

I totally remember those plastic oranges from visiting WDW when I was a little girl! :thumbsup2 Now there's a misty water-colored memory! :lmao:

Weren't those the coolest? I wish my parents hadn't thrown it out. I wonder if it could be in their basement somewhere. Isn't it funny what sticks in our memories?

I'm two updates behind! :scared1:

MNSSHP sounds like such a blast with DIS buddies. I really have to get to LTT again, I just love the atmosphere there. And last September they were calling families like you remember...The Smith Party from wherever. It was really neat.

I had already heard about the ill fated Sci Fi experience. I've been there once and wasn't overly impressed but was willing to give it another shot.

WDW with DIS buddies is the absolute bestest! ::yes:: I think I'd like to try LTT for lunch (fried cheese, come to mama!! ;) ) It was somewhat ill-fated but the company was great and anything that comes with french fries is pretty ok in my book!

There seem to be so many reviews of Sci-Fi recently that aren't that great, what a shame! It also seems to be rather common that people have really long waits. I think they should question the number of ADRs they make available... We will be eating there in January, but won't expect anything spectacular. So I hope we won't be too dissappointed! :goodvibes

I agree- I think they just need to re-examine their process b/c service and waiting can overshadow everything. :sad2: The other restaurants don't seem to have the problem to this degree so hopefully they can learn from some other restaurants to fix it!

I'm right there with you on your review of Sci Fi.....Great atmosphere, but the food, just ehh.

I'm making note of the Oct. dates! I'm just afraid that our fall break is going to be a week late.

Oh yes, DO make notes of those Oct dates. The more the merrier!! I can't wait! :woohoo:

I hope they can preserve One Man's Dream or at least portions of it too. I think it should be mandatory viewing-- if you want to come to DHS you have to spend time in OMD!

:scared1: YIKES for it being so darn hot! CRAZY!!!

Sounds like you made the most of it and had fun anyway!

Hmmmmm, your SciFi experience sounds familiar to me :rolleyes1. All I'll say is stayed tuned in my TR ;)

It was SO flipping hot. I love the heat. Generally I say it can't get hot enough for me. But this was a lot. An awful lot. And I'd give anything to be back there right now -- heat and all.

Oh dear, a similar experience at Sci Fi?? Seriously, they need to hire me (not that I know anything about the restaurant biz) and I'll straighten them right out!

WOW! You know we have never been to SciFi, I was thinking it would be fun for dessert only... I hear over and over the same message about the food... BUT bad service, that sucks regardless of the food!

At least it is Disboard friendly :rotfl2:

Africa hot... that is much more DIS friendly! :rotfl: Sci Fi does have quite a few yummy looking desserts not to mention milkshakes with alcoholic goodness so that might be a great way to experience the atmosphere!

You've never been in OMD? Oh, do try to stop in there in Dec. Although your boys would probably not be too intrigued.

Hmm, I was thinking of putting Sci-Fi on my maybe list for spring but now...maybe not. My list is longer than days I will have anyways I'm sure!

Oh, Katie-- don't take it off the list for me. I never want to be the reason anyone takes a restaurant off their list. Similarly I am not liable if you hate a restaurant I love. Brown Derby will remain my top draft pick in DHS but it is not cheap and it's not a quick experience. I've heard good things about Mama Melrose ... that's next on my list to try.

Awww I loved meeting you!! You are an amazing person and I am lucky to call you friend and I was so glad with our many experiences!!!! I really enjoyed walking around One Man's Dream with you and watching the movie about Walt!!!

You are too sweet! :goodvibes I'm glad we got to meet too and can't wait til our next trip to the World!!

Did you find your tank tops?

I did not end up purchasing any additional tops. I did laundry instead. :lmao: I was very tempted to get a pajama set with a very cute tank top but all I could think was that b/c it was in virtually every store on property that people would be pointing and laughing behind my back that I was wearing pjs. Or worse I'd wind up in someone's TR! :rotfl:

I remember them from Hershey Park and other amusement parks. Sadly, I never went to WDW as a kid...:sad1:

Really? I had no idea other parks had them. I bet they were cool no matter where you saw them. And you can make up for a lack of visits as a kid with plenty as a grown-up! ::yes::

Totally agree on Sci-Fi... mediocre food and service, cool atmosphere. I'm with you- take the kids, bag it otherwise.

I really, really hope they don't take One Man's Dream out before I get there in Sept. I can't believe they'd even think about taking out this one last place you can learn about the man behind the Dream and reality of WDW. :confused3

Tequila tasting, next up? This I gotta see!

Tequila was very fun! You'll hear about it soon enough! I hope OMD is still there for you in Sept too!!

Oh, MeMom, you have SUCH a way with words! :goodvibes Isn't it just amazing that all this came from one man's mind and vision? I keep waiting for my "big idea." It hasn't come yet.

It is certainly an under-appreciated attraction!

First, don't be hard on yourself for not exercising on that super hot day! I don't know if I could ever picture my lazy self exercising on vacation! :rotfl:

I'm a tequila girl so I'm excited to hear about this tasting!

Thanks! I might feel better about it if I had picked back up with the exercise once the humidity broke but by then we were in full on vacation mode! :lmao:

The seating system at Sci Fi with two per row is definitely a liability. I'm sure that makes it harder for them to seat parties quickly and efficiently. But I still think there has to be a better way.

Another tequila girl. Yee-haw! You must visit La Cava del Tequila on your next visit!!

Oh, Bo. I wonder what Chelsea will think next year too. She'll come back around, though. Because at my age I'm thinking an always smiling, reasonably handsome man with a never-ending supply of coca cola sounds pretty good! :lmao:

Holy mother blanking hot... I want a tag!!!! :upsidedow

C-

I am so seriously behind on everyones TR. Finally caught up and I see I missed two great episodes. If it wasn't so late I could remember more details.

Love the NYC pin - that is so cute! Very neat idea.

So glad you enjoyed LTT. When we ate there I don't think they remembered to call out that we were from Delaware - what neglect, considering Delaware is the first state and all. :rotfl:

I love yout group PP pic and I m glad you enjoyed the parade. Boo to the mom who put her kids in front of you without asking.

Love you mouse ears!

Woot! to meeting Jen finally. :woohoo: That must have been so cool. I can't wait to meet her in 11 months!!!!! I'm glad you got to ride TSM together. My hand kills at the end of the ride, too!

Your burger looks yum! The adult beverage looks even better.

I know there's more, but my brain is only half functioning!

No worries about falling behind. We/I'll be here. :goodvibes

You will not be disappointed meeting Miss Jen. I hope to be there too!

The magic star cocktail was definitely the winner of the meal. Don't make fun of me but I have used the glow cube since I've been home... It makes any drink more fun! :thumbsup2

I was bummed to have had to bid such a quick adieu to Jen and not spend more time in DHS but I knew that we had the whole rest of the trip stretching in front of us. So I walked back along the walkway. I can’t remember if I had a couple of quick minutes to dash into my room to try to freshen up a bit – I think I did- but it wasn’t long before I was heading in through “my” entrance again en route to Mexico.

I was very excited for the tequila tasting. I love the Mexico pavilion. I’ve been excited about the idea of a tequila bar since it was first rumored years ago! I adore Mexican food. And I’m a pretty big fan of tequila. ;) So I was thrilled to have gotten a seat at the tasting and a chance to check out La Cava del Tequila… or “the ditch” as some other very hilarious DIS’ers have named it. Ditch b/c it is so easy to fall into and so darn difficult to climb out of!

When I got there the bar and the whole pavilion were packed. In 100+ degree temps, the dark cool Mexico pavilion replete with margaritas is quite a port in the storm! The bar was hopping – packed – at least 4 deep… as it was pretty much every other time I visited (yes, there were a *few* other times :rolleyes1)

I checked in without issue and before too long we were being let into the “seating area” of the bar. I was pleased that there were assigned seats so I didn’t have to worry about being solo and imposing myself on another party. I was seated at a table for six with a couple, two guys who were traveling together, and a guy who was solo. It was a fun group. Of course fun tends to follow a group consuming tequila!!

I wish I had more photos of the ditch. It is small – there’s the bar height table for six we were at, a little seating area with a loveseat for lack of a better term and little stools around a coffee table and then maybe 10-15 tables for two that could be pushed together and configured different ways. You can see a little bit of it in this photo. That’s Hilda our host in the foreground. She’s from Tequila, Mexico. On the wall to the right is a mural that depicts the tequila harvesting process.

DSC01518.jpg

So when we got in there our places were already set with tastes of three different types of tequila. And when they say taste… that really is all they mean. Can you even see the liquid in the glasses? It was two sips IF that. Definitely less than a shot of each.

DSC01519.jpg

We learned all about how tequila is made – the agave plant is picked, it’s fermented (?- I think?) and aged. What do you want? I wasn’t taking notes… I just know I like the final product!! ;) Hilda was very informative. She had a thick accent, however, as someone who took Spanish for years and years I didn’t have trouble with the accent. I DID have trouble with the fact that they kept the bar open during the tasting. Just the seating area was blocked off. The folks at the bar were pretty loud and distracting. I understand they don’t want to forfeit income during that hour (it was actually only 45 min) but it really impacted the quality of the experience.

Finally it was time to taste – the guys at my table were funny and we had a good time during the “lecture” part cracking jokes about when the tasting part of the tasting might commence. Similar to a wine tasting we were told to swirl it in the glass and smell it. We were encouraged to smell lime, coffee bean and cinnamon stick prior to tasting different tequilas to enhance the experience. The guys made fun of me b/c I tried the first one in just about one sip. I’m not generally a shot person – there just wasn’t that much in the glass!

Eventually it was time for the food to come out. Hilda seemed honestly surprised that none of us (not just my table) had any tequila left. I hope that the pours got a bit bigger as the festival went on – I think this was one of the first tastings- it was only the 2nd day of the festival. The food was VERY good. A shrimp ceviche (I actually gave that to one of the guys as I don’t like shrimp) and then two tostadas – one with chicken and one with crab. Both had queso fresco, sour cream, onion, avocado (my fave!), and cilantro. Muy delicioso!!

All in all it was about 45 min and despite the small pours of tequila, I thought it was worth it. I had a great time and would do it again.

I got a margarita to go – jalpeno y limon. Sounds like a crazy combination but it was so good. Spicy but good! As I browsed around the pavilion, not yet ready to return to the heat, I thought I’d take another look at the San Angel Inn menu since I’d enjoyed the food at the tasting so much. I noticed that it appeared to have changed and looked much more appetizing (to me). I’m looking forward to giving it another try! Sorry for the glare.

Eventually it was time to head back into the heat. I headed over to China. I love browsing around in that shop.

More F&W booths but I had to bypass saving some room for dinner since I’d be meeting Jen for dinner at Rose & Crown!

DSC01525.jpg

But before that it was Big Bad Voodoo Daddy night and I was meeting Jen and Heather to jump, jive and wail… or whatever you do. ;)

Jen was super duper sweet and brought me such a nice present. It was an absolutely perfect for me silver mickey head wine stopper and a very interesting Disney book.

BBVD was in full suits … they had to be HOT. But they put on a great show. There were a bunch of swing dancers who put on a show of their own in the walkway. Very fun! Immediately afterward, we ducked into the American Adventure for a break from the heat – not to mention that it is a fun attraction. If I remember correctly, Heather had never seen the show before! :scared1:

It was time to head over to the UK for dinner at Rose & Crown. I checked us in and decided that I would leave the seating up to the fates and not make any specific request. We were buzzed before not too long and were rewarded with a great seat outside under the roof – which would be VERY important later.

The first thing ordered: The Welsh Dragon: Peach Schnapps, Melon Liqueur, - Créme de Menthe, Orange Juice, and Pineapple Juice Served in a Souvenir Cup $9.50

YUM-O. Thanks for the recommendation from so many DIS’ers!

DSC01526.jpg

Unfortunately I forgot my souvenir mug in the hullaballoo that went on later. Doh. :headache: Oh well, there’s always next time!

Mixed Greens - with warm Bread Croutons, crispy Bacon, Roasted Onions, Irish Cheddar, and warm Bacon Vinaigrette $5.99

DSC01527.jpg

This was very tasty!

As soon as I heard that “duchess potatoes” was code for cheesy potatoes I was sold on this dish!! Cottage Pie - Ground Beef with Onions, Carrots, and Green Peas topped with Duchess Potatoes $18.99

We had the BEST server here. I am sorry to say that I don’t remember his name but he was super nice, patient with all of our questions, and attentive without being annoying. He stood in stark contrast to our Sci Fi experience. He let us take our time and wait until Illuminations (it wasn’t that much longer) and assured us that the umbrellas on the outside tables would be taken down and we’d have a great view.

T minus 10 minutes to show time and the sky opened up. Truly. MONSOON. Buckets and buckets of rain. The show did go on (although the umbrellas stayed up) and it was only a wee tiny bit less magical in a downpour. Jen and I were happy, sitting, dry, stuffed from a good meal… what is better than that?? :cloud9:

The monsoon was another opportunity for America’s worst in manners to come on display. Now, it truly was WAY more than a passing shower. It was a deluge. Noah and his arc couldn’t have been too far behind and in fact they may have been out on the lagoon but it was raining so hard we couldn’t see. But I was amazed at the number of soggy people without ADRs or plans to eat there who made their way onto the covered balcony. One terribly rude family of three pushed their way up to the railing and basically stood with their wet soggy butts in an older couple’s face who were sitting at the table. Unreal.

Just typing that brings another story to mind. Something that would become a theme for the trip – shrieking children at the table. I’m not a mom. Maybe my tolerance is lower. But there was this kid a few tables over who would shriek at the very top of his lungs. And then he’d get a crayon or other treat and do it again. And the parents made no move whatsoever to take him out of the restaurant. Kids get upset and antsy. I get it. But when it becomes apparent that this isn’t a passing tantrum then I think the parents have to do something about it and not subject the other diners to it. Even our waiter rolled his eyes at them.

Illuminations was over but the rain was still coming down. Our server told us we could hang out as long as we liked. So we did – tried to wait it out a bit and let the crowds dissipate. A couple of times we got ready to make a break for it only to have it start to pour in earnest again. I think there was even some thunder and lightning. I thankfully didn’t have far to go through my private entrance/exit back to BC but Jen had to make it to the front of the park :scared: Eventually we decided that it was just time to go. So we parted ways and agreed we’d see each other the next day for dinner at the California Grill!

I tell you what, that 5 min walk – dash between the raindrops- was PRICELESS!!!

Jen has previously shared that something that tells her she is in a deluxe property is the quality of the toilet paper. Well, to me, what happened next on this soggy evening truly epitomizes the Disney deluxe difference. As I dodged puddles and squished my way up the walkway to the Beach Club lobby, standing there with baskets full of dry towels were the life guard staff. :worship: :cloud9: So you got to grab some towels, dry yourself off and toss them into a big hamper before heading back to your room. There was also housekeeping staff there keeping up with the mopping so people wouldn’t slip on the marble floor.

And when I got up to the room, more friends were waiting for me

Up next: AK & Cali Grill

Thanks for reading!!

I am in such a between trips funk that this update just had me :cloud9:

All of your food at Rose & Crown looks so yummy. I might have to try that cottage pie. Mmmmm.

I'm glad you enjoyed your Tequila tasting, I don't think I've ever had tequila! :scared1:

Don't you just love the wonderful service at the Beach Club?

I'm glad you were able to enjoy your meal at R&C, in spite of the rain and rude guests.
I do have children, but still have no tolerance for a screamer.
Sorry folks, if your child is having a tantrum, take them out!

So excited to find another update......

1. Tequila tasting - that sounds like fun! I was reading Podsnel's TR re: a similar experience at a wine tasting - the pours were ridiculously small. Certainly not my idea of a taste. But it does sound like a fun time. And the margarita to go - wow - different!

2. Welsh dragon - I must get one of those in May. Bummer about the souvenier glass.

3. Deluge during Illuminations - I guess you picked a good night to go to R&C. I'm glad you got to see the show from a dry vantage point. Sounds like you had a great waiter. Bummer about all the wet intruders. Uncool!

4. Screaming child - just another reason why I never took my kids to WDW until they were older. I just never wanted to HAVE to deal with something like that. I think parents just get so tired or overwhelmed or something that they just try to ignore, thinking everyone else will too.
