Ladies 40 and over-Do you agree with this fashion advice?

Ellen needs to come to Texas and live through a summer without wearing shorts.

I AM starting to think, however, that most of us over 35 or so do not have upper thighs that should be displayed to the public.

53 here, showing my knees less now than I used to but I still show em. Shorts and bathing suits. I do have several pair of capris that just cover my knees. My son asked me not to wear my green and white polka dotted shorts anymore. I said, "do my legs look bad?" He said, "no, I don't like green and white polka dots on my Mom." I wear the short now only when he's not around, lol! They ARE kinda frumpy looking! And I agree about the upper thigh thought for over 40. If you're showing it, don't stand next to a 16 yo!!! at the very least.

I don't show my thighs or stomach, but knees are okay. There are lots of skirts and long shorts that stop above the knees. My days of mini-skirts are gone, but a lot of women my age look great in them. As long as the skirts are tasteful and not too tight.

I have the worlds ugliest knees because I have had them both replaced and have these huge scars running down the front of them. While my mini skirt days are over, I still like to wear shorts that are above my knees.

I'm 40 and I have GREAT legs. Considering what my flabby belly looks like, there is NO WAY I am covering up my best asset. Just give me a tight mini-skirt and a baggy, loose fitting top and I look fabulous.

Heh. I could have written this post! I have great thighs and legs - and for the time being, I'm still wearing short shorts and miniskirts. Once my legs start looking like my stomach, I'll retire them from my wardrobe. The trouble is because I have very long legs short shorts are the only shorts that look really good on me. Knee length/walking/Bermuda shorts look HORRID on me, as do capris, unless they fall below the knee. So when/if my legs get too flabby for short shorts, I guess I'll be wearing pants or long capris only.

Barkin's a dessicated bag of bones who's desperately tried plastic surgery to hang onto her youthful looks ... which were largely based on youth.

Now that she can't get away with showing her knees, nobody should.

Do enough lipo on the legs and you get some really scary looking wrinkling above the knee, unlike anything normally aging women get! See Melanie Griffith's leg, below. She's 50. My 70 year old mom doesn't have legs that scary.

She says she has had no plastic surgery yet but won't rule it out. She does admit to having some procedures done at the dermatologist (Fraxel, Prevage, and sometimes has a "filler" done).

I did read her interview in O Magazine last night and, quite honestly, for most people I do agree with what most of what she says. I think there will always be women who will be outside the norm and they can get away with it, but most people can't. On most over 40 women, the knees and elbows don't looks so good. I also agree wholeheartedly with her advice on going sleeveless--don't do it unless you have great arms. I don't and I'm constantly searching for a sleeve.

Maybe Ellen has bad knees :confused3 ?
That's my guess too! I don't think I'm in denial over my aging body, but I have nice legs, and since I'm very short, I look better in things that hit just over my knee -- in a long skirt, I look dumpy.

AUUUUGH! That can't be truthful! I'm 41, and there's no way my legs'll go downhill that much in 9 years! If my legs looked like that, I wouldn't wear shorts!

While I prefer to wear long skirts when I wear them I don't think this is a requirement after 40. Where what you look good in.

I'm 42 and still show my knees. I like my knees!

That picture of Melanie Griffith is plan scary!

Ewww, that monstrocity is married to a fine piece of meat like Antonion Banderas? Where is the fairness in this world?

LOL! That is the second time today you read my mind!! :lmao:

I'll never for the life of me understand that pairing. :confused3

I tihnk it really depends on what your legs look like more than what your age is.

Some people 40+ have great legs and some people under 40 have terrible legs.

45 here and I wear minis all summer long and even in the winter with boots. I guess I look good because my DD's friend saw me for the first time and said I was hot and looked like a ****. Can I say this here?:confused3

Guess I can't since it didn't show up, well it begins with an M.

Thanks for reminding me where I read the article. And for those of us who have great legs, I think we should be able to show them off. I think even women 50 and above can look great in shorts, a skort, or whatever as long as it's paired tastefully. I do agree with the strapless thing. I don't think strapless looks good on anyone.

And for the one who asked, I wore the black boots and black skirt on Thanksgiving-It was a very dressy look and it was pretty cold outside. I also wore the same black boots on Pirate Night with a jean skirt. I have to say I thought the women who were wearing tropical dresses with white sandals looked a tad silly standing next to the fire and Christmas tree that night.

But that's getting on another topic...Let's just say that I think boots and a skirt are a very flattering look for a lot of women-at least if the skirt is well fitted, etc.

I'm 25 and I think that's total bull. My mom's 56 and her legs are WAY better than mine. I don't understand the concept of some fashion police telling us that after some certian magical age we can't do this, that, or the other - like "you have to cut your hair off when you turn 30/40/whatever!" or "no one over 40 should wear anything sleeveless!". It's idiotic. If you like something about your body, flaunt it!
