Kona Cafe or Ohana's for breakfast?

When I called to make dining reservations for our upcoming March trip I wasn't quite sure what I wanted to do for breakfasts for myself and my almost 5 year old twins (boy/girl). I had heard a lot of rave reviews about the Tonga Toast at Kona Cafe so I said that I wanted to try that. The reservations woman swayed me to go with Ohanas because it was a character meal with Lilo & Stitch and said they had "something similar" to Tonga Toast there. Is that true? I don't see anything like it on the menu online...:confused3

I've never been to either place so I don't know which would really be the better option - and I'm wondering if going with the character meal was the way to go.

I'd appreciated feedback on either experience.

thank you!

I can't give you a comparison, but I can say that regardless I would go with Kona! Kona is my one of my favorite WDW restaurants for breakfast! I have had the Tonga Toast, and it is fabulous! But in addition to that, the other food is excellent as well! I get the Tonga Toast with ham, and their ham is great. DH gets the Big Kahuna, which includes a lot of different things, like french toast, eggs, sausage, potatoes, pancakes. And all of it is so yummy too! It is such a fantastic restaurant, that I would say go with it hands down!

I can't offer a comparison either as I have never been to Kona. Last trip we did the character breakfast at Ohana's as my daughter's favorite is Stitch! Breakfast was excellent and all the characters came around often. Sounds like either way would be a good choice!

Hands down do Ohana with the kids. They will LOVE it! The character interaction is fabulous plus they get to get up and shake maracas around the room. The food is excellent! We do it every trip.

Kona is good but it's just a sit down table service. Go for the fun place!

I also thought - could be wrong but you might be able to get tonga toast from captain cooks.

I am trying to decide between these two for breakfast as well. I just love Kona coffee. I have only had the kind that I make at home and I don't have it very often. Do they offer Kona coffee at 'Ohana? Is there anywhere else I could get Kona coffe besides Kona Cafe? And if so is it convenient?

Right outside the Kona Cafe is a coffee service cart and they do serve Kona coffee. I've never had breakfast at the Kona Cafe so I can't speak to the type of coffee they serve there.

We just experienced our second Lilo and Stitch breakfast at Ohanas this Saturday. We schedule our breakfast for 10:30 so that it's more of a brunch and takes care of two meals. I think the food is great and the character interaction is a big hit with the kids.

If your kids like Lilo and Stitch, you should do 'Ohana's. If you're doing other character meals and/or it really doesn't matter if you see those characters, do Kona.

We haven't done 'Ohana's for breakfast in years (we're all older now), but we stumbled upon Kona's for breakfast one year when we stayed at the Poly for three nights. We love Kona's for breakfast and think it's pretty cheap for a nice sit-down breakfast at WDW.

We love Ohana and would do that one over Kona for sure. There really isn't anything that they serve at Ohana that I would think is similar to the Tonga Toast. If you really want that, then do Kona, if not, Ohana would be my choice.

If I had kids, I'd do 'Ohana. As a kid, I'd be sad to hear the excitement in 'Ohana and see the characters and instead eat at Kona. There isn't much to Kona. It's a hotel coffee shop kinda place. Wonderful food (dinner) but breakfast was unimpressive (typical breakfast food).

(and the Tonga Toast may be a fave of some but many find it NASTY with a capital N. Be forewarned that it's greasy, fatty, and so sweet that my sugar addicted DH could barely eat half before feeling sick. It's a good dish to order to share as it's very rich and greasy)

Can you do both? ;)

I am not the OP but this post has really helped me make my decision. I never realized they were next door. MY DS loves Stitch so much and he would be heartbroken if I made him miss all the fun just so I could have my coffee. :thanks:

Prefer great food with no characters??? Kona

Prefer good food with lots of character interaction and kids dancing around restaurant with the characters??? Ohana

Both are great but it depends on what you're looking for.

Just outside of Kona is a coffee kiosk. They serve different coffees and they do serve a blended Kona coffee, but no 100% Kona. For 100% Kona coffee you have to eat at Kona Cafe. It is served in a french press pot for $7.00. If your not willing to pay $7 for coffee, just get the blend at the kiosk and go to Ohanas.

Captain Cook's is now serving Tonga Toast. It is a couple dollars cheaper than at Kona. I don't know if it is as good.

If I was you, I'd go with Ohanas. The activities should keep your kids (5 year old twins, good luck!) busy so you can have a quiet moment and get to eat warm food! Have a great trip!

Our two DS-8 & 9 asked specifically for Ohana for this year's trip. It was their favorite breakfast and character interaction. :thumbsup2 We haven't tried Kona before but I hear lots of good things about it too.

i would definately go with ohana's with the kids, ohana's breakfast is very good, we don't really like the buffets all that much. kona is great but wikth kid they would prefer the character breakfast.

Thank you all for your replies! :thumbsup2 After reading about the character interaction and fun things to see and do for the kids I think I'm going to stick with going to Ohana's. My son will like all the excitement - and if there's a chance of playing anything that makes noise, that's definitely his vote.

I'm so glad I asked! I was really nervous about it and now I'm looking forward to it!!

My 8 yo son LOVES Stitch too. Last year we stayed at the Poly and we had early res. around 7:30am. My DH and oldest DS (11) decided to sleep in, so is was just me and DS 3 and DS 8. My DS 8 wore his Stitch hat and T-shirt. It was an awesome time to go because it was not crowded yet. Stitch came and sat at our table and fed my son his MM waffles. My son was in heaven. Later they had a parade and Stitch came all the way around the restaurant to get both my sons to lead the parade with him. I think it was the highlight of their trip. Lots of great pictures. All the other characters spent a lot of time at our table too. My suggestions- if you can stand it- go early as possible. After, you can hop on the monorail and be there for opening of the MK!!!! Have fun!!!

I think you made the right choice! We loved the 'Ohana character breakfast. DD (6) loves Stitch and was about to cry that we didn't go this year! I had to promise her that we'd do it on our next trip. The character interaction is great and the atmosphere at the Poly is fun!

The last time we went they didn't have anything like Tonga Toast on the menu at 'Ohana. I've tried bites of DH's and I wasn't overly impressed but I don't like sweets in the AM! I much prefer standard breakfast fare.

FYI- I'm expecting boy/girl twins in April! Can't wait!

This sounds like a PERFECT way to start our vacation. When you make your ADR's do you have to tell them the time or can you ask when they accept the first ADR? I am sure we will be tired, especiall with the 2 hour time difference but we are going to bed early and who cares WE WILL BE AT DISNEY:woohoo:

I think that they begin at 7:00 or 7:30. Even if it's around 8:00, they serve food fast and you are just a short monorail ride to the MK. Hope you and your family have a WONDERFUL time!@!!
