Know of An Effective Way To Fade Haircolor?

This past Friday, I went to my regular stylist for some highlights (I regularly highlight). The last few highlights have been kind of ho-hum and she asked me if I wanted to put some red in. Now, I've done red before and, in my experience, it has always looked more brown and it fades fairly quickly. I wasn't too worried. She asked me if I wanted to be more auburn (which I've had before and it looks brown on me) or if I wanted a true red? She then explained that it wouldn't be "stop sign" red but something like a true redhead would be (I'm thinking copperish and on the more orange side but deeper?).

Anyway, I agree to this. So, I'm having blonde, light brown, and some red put into my naturally brown hair. When it's all done, my stylist is thrilled. The lighting isn't great there but I detect some "burgundy." Oh well, I know it doesn't last.

When I get home, I realize that these streaks (mainly concentrated in the front and top of hair) are burgundy and kind of bordering on purple. I have now washed my hair 4 times and this crap is really not fading. I feel so stupid, especially in my business suit at work.

I know I could go back to her and she might fix it but, seriously, I just don't have any time to do this.

I have washed with a clarifying shampoo. I googled this and saw that Prell worked and Head and Shoulders (but also clarifying shampoo). Well, the clarifying is not working so I'm not sure if the others are any better.

Any tried and true techniques? The other colors in my hair are just fine. I just want this BURGUNDY to fade, just a bit would be nice. Against all odds of red hair dye, it seems to be hanging in there...

I've had red problems before too. Do you have a Sally Beauty store nearby? There is a conditioning shampoo they carry called, "Shimmer Lights", that will tone down reds. It has helped me in the past.

But I have to say, I'm not sure about burgundy (even though it is in the red family). You may want to ask someone there about it. Sally Beauty typically hires knowledgeable people.

Thanks! Yes, I do have one somewhat close by. Whether I can get to it is another matter...

This is supposed to be a red but it is just so fake looking, I can't stand it. I read that many stylists/colorists "overdye" the red to force more pigment in so the fading is not so bad, but man, I hate this.

I think it would look great on someone with stick-straight hair who wanted that streaked looked. My hair is a bit on the fluffy side and it just looks ridiculous.

OT: Christine, I'm still trying to find someone to do highlights and decent haircut around here. Do you have someone in Woodbridge? Do you think she'd be decent with curly hair? If you'd care to share her name, though I know many don't want to, I would be most appreciative. I REALLY need a good colorist.

I hope you can fix it quick. It's an awful feeling not looking like yourself. It's like having a gray cloud over your head.

One thing I really like about Sally Beauty (in addition to having knowledgeable people) is that most of their prices are super reasonable.

Deep contioning will also help the conditioner molacules will push out the color ones. So try Joy then a deep heavy conditioner leave it on about 15 mins.

I have also found that lying on a beach is a great way to fade red tones;)

Tina,

No problem. Although you might not want to use her now that you know about my red...

I go to Statements Salon. It is located in Tackett's Mill Shopping Center in Woodbridge (they just moved up the road from where they were).

I see a stylist named Jen. Nikki (the owner) is also good as well as Suki. Another stylist, Lisa, is also good but she can be a bit on the quiet side and puts some people off. They all do a good job and between my friends, myself, and my daughter, we've used these stylists. Besides my "red" accident, they are all pretty safe with color and won't do anything crazy to you. My daughter often wants crazy stuff done and they won't do anything that will be damaging. As far as curly hair, I don't have experience with that but at least Jen or Nikki would have the experience to work with it. Their number is 703-494-2400. They have recently started having Sunday hours and I LOVE going there then as it is very low-key.

been a hairdresser for 30 years! this is what we have always used if a color comes out way to dark!! lol I thought I was the only one who knew that secret!!:rotfl:

I was told to use Sunlight dish detergent. I am not sure if it will help, but it may be worth a shot.

red fades quickly but if it was applied over any of your old blonde highlights it may have grabbed the red (burgandy) more and that is why it looks funky. So, it may not fade as quickly as it would over your natural hair color.

Another vote for the Prell. Had to use it many years ago after a coloring accident.

Christine -- I think you've tried everything I was going to suggest. Though you might try some of the John Frieda Brilliant Brunetts Glosser to tone down the red and pick up a bit more brunette??

I live in the area too and go to Good Hair Day Salon in Lorton. Megan is amazing with color. She also gives a really great cut. I have curly hair that I wear in a straight graduated bob. Don't know how she does it, but she manages to cut it so it behaves!

Well, the only place on my way home was CVS. They actually had the "Classic" Prell. So, I'm going to wash it in a few minutes and then wash it again in the morning.

I thought about buying the L'Oreal color remover but I like the rest of my hair and didn't want to remove that.

I thought about the possibility that previous highlights might have made this worse but I haven't had any blonde highlights since last June. I did have a "lowlight" done in October and I had all browns put it. It was too dark and dull which was why I was back getting blonde and red put in.

I can't wait to see if this works!

I had a lot of "comments" today that my hair was doing a good job at matching my sweater (which was a rose/fuschia color).:rotfl:

i wanna get in on this thread... dd did a mini highlight kit thing over the summer and it's growing out and she hates it but doesn't want to re-dye it and start all over. i'm going to hit walmart in the morning and buy some prell!

Well, I just tried the Prell and I can't say that I can detect any lightening of the red. Darn this stuff is TENACIOUS!!

I'm going to give it another shot tomorrow morning.

If she highlighted it but any type of bleaching product, the prell won't make a difference in the color. If it was bleached with a haircolor product it will likely fade that off--but won't put color back into the hair shaft.

Christine, your blonde probably soaked in that red like a sponge. Sorry.

So maybe it has faded a bit! Burgendy will often fade into shades of pink. :(

This might sound dumb but why don't you just call the salon and have them fix it? My salon is happy to fix up any minor or even major issues with my hair if I have them.
