KitchenAid Stand Mixer as Wedding Gift?

My closest friend's daughter is getting married in a few months. On their registry is a KitchenAid stand mixer and I know she really really wants it and I know it's something they'll use for many years to come. The registry is Williams-Sonoma ($349) but I can get the same one at Kohls today for $274 inc. shipping and taxes. I think it's a good deal and my friend can remove it from the registry for me.

So, my question is: this is way more than I'd spend on a shower gift and I don't have anyone to share the cost with, so is this appropriate to give as a wedding gift? It's probably still a bit more than I'd give for wedding, but there will be 5 of us attending, so I can justify the expense.

I wouldn't lug it to the wedding, but would find an appropriate time to give it to the couple beforehand.

Any thoughts?

I think its a great wedding gift! I know when DS got married, my brother got them a dyson and brought it to the reception!

Go for it! That would be a wonderful gift - especially since she wants one! And, as long as you can coordinate with either the bride, or her mother to have the one on the Williams Sonoma registry removed - I don't see a down side.

I received a K/A mixer from my aunt and uncle when we got married. I didn't have anything that expensive on our registry. Heck - we didn't use it much for the first 5 years or so after we got married. But - I am so glad we had it. I upgraded my K/A mixer after about 15 or so years of being married - and sold the original one for about $50.

If she didn't have one on her registry - I would feel differently. But - that is not the case.

Now - just another thought - does Williams Sonoma price match? I have no clue - but I would certainly ask the question. And -do you live local to where the bride is? If not -why not just have it shipped to the bride? It wouldn't be wrapped pretty - but I don't know any bride that would be bothered by that little detail!

And - while I'm on a roll - anything the bride has on a registry is fair game for a wedding gift. JMHO.

I vote best wedding gift ever!

Great idea! Just make sure it is the exact same one -- same color (there are so many) and size (4 qt. vs. 5 qt.) and has the attachments that the Wms Sonoma one comes with. You can give it to her at the shower rather than bringing it to the wedding.

Great gift!

Absolutely!!! I'm sure if it's on her registry she wouldn't mind if she got it for her shower or her wedding, just as long as she got it. :thumbsup2 What a great gift. One she will use forever.

Fantastic gift!

One of those things you'll rarely buy for yourself after you've gotten married.
I had one on our wedding registry and never got it. Been married for 10 years and so many times wished I had one... but $300 always seemed to get eaten up by something else.

And I doubt they care which store you buy from. Just let the bride's mom know so she can get it taken off the registry.

I think it's a great idea for a wedding gift. As the other poster said, though, make sure it's identical. Check the motor speed--Kohl's used to sell what looked like the same ones but they had a less power. You've stated that they are same so I'm sure you've checked but it's the "nagging mother" in me that just wants to make sure!:)

Thanks everyone - I just ordered it and my friend is removing it from the registry! Looks like there's a mail-in form for a free meat grinder attachment. It's not on their list, but for free I may as well get it too. This is the price I was hoping to find!

I'd prefer to give it as a wedding gift due to the price than a shower gift, so I need to figure out the best way to do it.

Thanks again!

This is my concern and of course Williams-Sonoma doesn't list the model #. They do show a KA comparison chart and it has the model # KSM150PS on it, so I feel fairly confident. They both show a 325 W motor and .25 HP - is that what I'm looking for?

Definitely get the free attachment! As you said - it is free!

Sounds like you need to get a shower gift too? What about something that might complement the mixer - perhaps some baking spices - i.e. good cinnamon, good vanilla etc.

And - it makes perfectly good sense to do the mixer for the wedding present.

As java said, it is the best gift ever!! :goodvibes

And clh2's suggestion of this stuff is PERFECT!

When I had a shower, I remember my Nana bought me a laundry basket with kitchen towels, cloths in it plus salt, pepper, baking spices--all that stuff you need in the kitchen but you take for granted that it there. It was one of my favorite gifts!

I registered for one of these when I got married 10 years ago. No one bought it, but we ended up finding the Wolfgang Puck version at Sam's shortly after we were married. I use that thing all the time, but I do wish I had the KA one because of the flexibility of accessories.

My mil got one for me for Christmas this year. I use it all the time. I think it would make an awesome wedding gift!

My mom got one as a wedding present back in 1971 and its still working today. Hubby finally bought me one 2005 and I love it. Both my boys want one for when they move out.

I got a few nice gifts at my shower that were the combined shower/wedding gifts. Would she really expect something else in addition? Lucky girl!
