KitchenAid Stand Mixer as Wedding Gift?

I agree with determining the "wished-for" model. KitchenAid fans seem to fall into the category of tilt vs. lift-bowl models. Also I bought a Pro 600 for the higher wattage as I use it for grinding meat.

Otherwise, that's a fantastic gift and I'm sure she'll think of you everytime she uses it!

I'm in the "lift" camp vs tilt. My SIL has the tilt model and she rarely uses it as she can't tilt it up unless its on the edge of her countertops because of clearance issues with her upper cabinets. I have the "lift" model and it fits just fine under my upper cabinets and she sighs everytime I use it when she's over.

If I had a kitchen with an island (instead of the galley I have) it wouldn't matter. But getting an island in my kitchen means a HUGE construction project that just doesn't make sense in my 1960s house. Sigh....someday I'll have a bigger kitchen (even though mine is very nice...just not large).

When we renovated our kitchen, the first item on my list was a baking island. I have a cabinet that opens to the Rev-a-Shelf mixer stand -- that's where I keep my Kitchenaid. (I hate having things on the counters.) Also in the island is a spice pullout, and drawers/shelves for measuring cups and such. My favorite part of the kitchen.

Thanks everyone - I just ordered it and my friend is removing it from the registry! Looks like there's a mail-in form for a free meat grinder attachment. It's not on their list, but for free I may as well get it too. This is the price I was hoping to find!

I'd prefer to give it as a wedding gift due to the price than a shower gift, so I need to figure out the best way to do it.

Thanks again!

It's customary here to have a gift delivered to the bride's home or her parent's home prior to her wedding. This gives the bride time to open and ooo and awe over gifts with her groom, perhaps getting out a few thank yous. About half gifts are given in this way. You can drop it off yourself and it's usually done at least a week before the wedding/at least several days. Brides who know about this very old tradition will set up some linen covered tables in a receiving room to display their gifts.

That sounds so nice!

I'm a tilt fan. So, opinions vary. :) I also keep my mixer out (I have cabinet space for it but...) I love to see it in my kitchen. I wanted that thing for sooo long and knew it'd sit out like a piece of artwork, lol.

I would think the mixer would serve as a wedding and shower present--she knows how much something like that costs.

I'm a tilt fan also, growing up with mom's tilt. Not as fond of my lift-bowl, but bought it for the wattage. And yes to the "piece of art": mine is plain white and am often tempted to put on some decals or paint it. :lmao:

Janepod: my mother had a similar set-up as yours with a swing-out lift mechanism in a lower cupboard, bringing it to counter height. Wonderful idea! Mine barely fits under the upper cupboards on the counter, so it's still necessary to drag it out a bit for use.

Absolutely. Great gift. My husband got me one for my birthday a couple of years ago and I have used it so much that I don't know what I did before it. (Oh, yeah...used a really crappy, cheap hand mixer.) Mine sits on my counter for all to see.

I got mine as a wedding gift almost 40 years ago and I still use it alot. it's cream colored but I don't think there were many colors back then. It sits on my counter as it won't fit in the cabinets. It was one of the best gifts I ever got.

It is perfectly within etiquette guidelines to give the wedding gift at the shower and not give a separate shower gift. And given that it's $300, the bride certainly should be understanding of why you didn't also get honeymoon clothes for the shower. If you do decide not to give it at the shower, you will indeed need a separate shower gift to give at the shower if you attend. If you go that route, you may also drop off the mixer at any time before the wedding. But try to do so at least 4-5 days before. By the way, they really aren't extremely difficult to lug around in the box.

My closest friend's daughter is getting married in a few months. On their registry is a KitchenAid stand mixer and I know she really really wants it and I know it's something they'll use for many years to come. The registry is Williams-Sonoma ($349) but I can get the same one at Kohls today for $274 inc. shipping and taxes. I think it's a good deal and my friend can remove it from the registry for me.

So, my question is: this is way more than I'd spend on a shower gift and I don't have anyone to share the cost with, so is this appropriate to give as a wedding gift? It's probably still a bit more than I'd give for wedding, but there will be 5 of us attending, so I can justify the expense.

I wouldn't lug it to the wedding, but would find an appropriate time to give it to the couple beforehand.

Any thoughts?

Are you sure it is the same one? I would just double check it first.

Then I would buy it and give it to her ahead of time, nothing wrong with that.

I always think of "Father of the Bride" with Spencer Tracy and Liz Taylor and their dining room filling up with bridal gifts given.

Until I moved to the midwest, I had never heard of bringing gifts to the wedding. I would deliver it to the bride's home before the wedding.

And my (now) husband bought me a KA for my birthday the year before we got married. Almost 13 years later, that thing has served me well.

I am a "tilt" kind of gal :) I use that mixer at least once a week. The bride will definitely appreciate it, whether you give it at the shower or as a wedding gift.

I'm an out of the box gift giver. I live in the mid west and I'll give Brides a small space heater for their bathroom in June. Come Winter I get a message thanking me for their 'warm' gift.

I'm sure the mixer you gave OP will be warmly received and appreciated. :goodvibes

I don't know if this is the same mixer but here's a way to get it for $130:

http://moneysavingmom.com/2013/04/k...just-130-shipped-after-rebate-kohls-cash.html

::Add the KitchenAid Classic Plus Mixer priced at $229.99 to your cart (regularly $299.99)

::Add a filler item priced at around $5.50 to your total up to $200

::Use coupon code MOMSAVES15 to get 15% off

::Submit for the $30 mail in rebate

::Earn $40 in Kohl’s Cash

::That’s like paying $130.17 (+ shipping surcharge) after the Kohl’s Cash and Rebate!

.

LOL--until the DIS I never heard of giving an actual gift for a wedding other than a check or cash which you bring to the reception- it would be mighty odd to see someone walk into the reception hall carrying a big wrapped box here LOL.

I would give the mixer as a combination wedding/shower gift.

Or wrap the free meat grinder up, add a nice spatula and meauring cup, and you have the shower gift. Write on your card that it is to complement the ka mixer as I assume she will have it ahead of time.
