Our cruise is from Vancouver to San Diego, and I would love to be able to bring Kinder Eggs home as souvenirs (I live in the US). Has anyone had any issues with bringing them in? I won't be flying, so I will just need to get them off the ship.

Yes, there can be issues. As I'm sure you are aware, they are prohibited in the US. If you are caught with them at customs, the fine is hefty, several thousands dollars if I'm not mistaken. Now, would they necessarily find them? Maybe not, but if they do, the consequences aren't fun.

The fine is 2,000 an egg last time I checked. Is it worth the risk? They are just chocolate eggs. I love them but won't even buy them from Amazon because getting caught bringing them into the US isn't worth it to me.

I brought a bunch from Germany and no issues. I had no idea I couldn't. I didn't try to hide them either.

Agreed! I love chocolate, so when I was in Toronto I tried these mythical kinder eggs and could not for the life of me figure out the appeal - other than them being illegal in the US.

I guess if you've got money to potentially burn, go for it. But I agree...that penalty is WAY too steep for my blood!

They are actually my favorite chocolate. The foreign exchange student my aunt and uncle hosted when I was little use to send our family a whole box at Christmas time with other goodies. One day the boxes no longer had the eggs even though they were always specially sent as my gift. My aunt and Uncle found out the parents got in trouble for sending something illegal to the US. A few years ago in college the Polish candy store I use to get them from in NYC got raided and fined. I seriously thought the government had more important things to prevent then eggs with candy but it is taken pretty seriously.

We also went to Toronto for our friends wedding and drove across the border. Coming back into the US the only question was if we bought anything illegal including Kinder Eggs. was so funny the agent called them out directly!

Same... I had no idea you weren't allowed to bring them in! There are a lot of food items that I can't get at home that are all over in Canada - we stock up on many things every trip. Dad's cookies, Alphabet cereal, aero bars, smarties, wine gummies, higher quality versions of kitkats and Cadbury chocolate. Never once had them bat an eye at us..? :confused3 To be fair we have only brought a few of the eggs since the chocolate isn't very good - usually we get the kinder buenos instead.

I wouldn't risk it. Customs will be there when you disembark the ship. They aren't going out of their way to look for them and most CBPOs would just apologize and confiscate them if they came across them. But there's always that "one guy".

This. All day. Honestly, of all the stupid laws.

Because American children are too stupid not to choke on the toy, LOL.

It amazes me. We grew up playing with the Aussie version of these when I lived in Melbourne. We had thousands, and back then the critter inside was a buildable toy, so the parts were super tiny. No one ever ate one.

Yes!!! But they are only filled with chocolatey goodness, not toys.

Totally true, but I love them all the same. My husband is AF and when he or coworkers flew over to Germany, that was always on the list to bring back. I had no idea the eggs would start an international incident!

We bring them back every time we are out of the country (multiple times a year) and have never had an issue. Just brought them back from our Baltic cruise 2 weeks ago. So ridiculous that they are illegal. Don't they have tiny toys inside fast food meals and aren't there plenty of other toys with small pieces? Are American kids or their parents really so dumb? You'd think customs would have better things to look for!

Thanks for bashing my country, but since you asked, when they made these things some 40 years ago they were not covered by a law passed in 1938 that prohibits small toys embedded in candy. I'm sure someone could amend it, but we have better things to do.

? I didn't ask anything. It was rhetorical. And as I said there are plenty of other toys available here with tiny pieces. Don't see the difference.
