Did anyone see this in the news this week?

http://online.wsj.com/article/SB123750945477390601.html?mod=googlenews_wsj

Basically kids (preteens/teens) are crushing up Smarties or similar candies (Necco wafers, candy hearts, pixie sticks) and inhaling them and then blow it back out to look like they are smoking. And some are "snorting" it. Not to get high, but just to goof off an look cool. There are You Tube video "how tos" that are very popular.

While some are concerned about the fact that they think this could lead to the kids actually smoking or doing drugs, the biggest concerns are choking, cough, irritation, infection and apparently the chance of maggots feeding off the sugar residue in the nose. Yes, I said MAGGOTS! That should be enough to scare any kid off of trying it! Apparently one school has banned Smarties and you can get detention if you are caught with them.

I read the article and sort of  at the stupidity of some kids and dismissed it. Then DD came home yesterday and said that so and so was crushing candies and inhaling them and blowing them out at lunch.:sad2:

I was up at the school today so I took the article to the principal and let him know it was going on at lunch. It seems harmless but you just never know how far kids will take it.

I am just floored at the stupidity kids can come up with to try to look cool!

When I was in high school kids were snorting pixie sticks and crushed up altoids. Kids have been stupid for ages.

This stupity is going around DD's High School. DD thinks it truly stupid:confused3. Hopefully it will pass quickly but the video's are being spread like the flu.

What's a matter with kids these days? Don't they sell those flour coated gum cigarettes anymore. Now THOSE will make you look COOL.:cool2:

May I suggest looking up the youtube videos of kids trying to swallow a teaspoon of cinnamon? Now that's entertainment!

There's actually an ice cream shop in my town that sells old novelty candies that you don't see other places. And they have candy cigarettes, pretty much as you remember them, only the word "cigarette" appears nowhere on the packaging, despite the packaging being very old time cigarette package-y!

Yeah kids were snorting pixie stix and kool-aid when I was in Junior High.. that was in '87.... been around forever..

/sigh

Waaaay back when I was a kid they actually sold candy cigarettes in packages that looked like real cigarettes. And we had those bubble gum cigarettes AND cigars and I don't smoke or do drugs. :confused3

Same here! I'd still rather have the candy ones then the real thing.

I have no interested in snorting any kind of candy though. :scared:

Yep.

The difference now is that media & the internet can reach more people, faster. It then becomes some "huge crisis" that everyone under the age of 16 takes part in!

i loved those when I was a kid....and I have never smoked a day in my life !!!

I loved the candy cigarettes too! They had the red tip so they looked like they were glowing.

Just the thought of snorting candy/Kool Aid/Pixie sticks makes my nose hurt!

Bleghhh... I can't imagine.

When I first read this, I was thinking of Canadian Smarties (similar to M&Ms) and I was totally confused as to how someone could "smoke" or snort those, but then I realized you were talking about what we call "Rockets".

When I was a kid, my favourite thing was Popeye sticks. We would buy them at the grocery store and then pretend to "smoke" them on cool nights where we could see our breath. These kids just need a little creativity!:rotfl:

Those videos are hysterical. Some of them are actually doing tablespoons. BLECH!

Sadly, we used to do this in the 5th grade. I remember quite fondly sitting in the back of social studies with my best friend crushing a roll of Smarties and snorting lines of them.

Who knows why kids do stupid things like that? For the record, I've never even been tipsy, let alone drunk or high. I'm a productive tax-paying citizen.

Kids just invent dumb things to do. It's comforting that the more things change, the more they stay the same.

Kids will always find new and innovative ways to be really stupid. This is bad, but it's not as bad as the kids that used to hang themselves on the looped towel dispensers at school. All the little boys in my grade three class used to drink their paint water to prove how tough they were, how the teacher never noticed or stopped it is beyond me.

Many kids at my school do this. Last year we were rehearsing for a play, and a boy (he actually played Toto in The Wizard of Oz) was snorting smarties....and one of the moms FREAKED OUT. :scared1:Of course I talked to the kid, and his mom, and made him throw the candy away, but that other mom could just NOT get over it! I guess she'd never heard about it before...

so I watched the cinnamon videos....LOL crazy!!!

You made me almost spit soda out hahahaha!
I remember those awful gu things, the gum was always really hard and made your jaws sore, the only cool thing was blowing dust in someone's face. By the way, who snorts pixie sticks? Wouldn't dust come out if you sneezed..definately not awesome.
