Kids Disney Boutique / Customs Clothes Part 2

Alright couple questions because I've asked my mom to teach me to sew. This should be interesting. I've never wanted to but she doesn't always want to make stuff for me and I thought I'd give it a whirl....

First, Does anyone else spend ten minutes trying to figure out what page they last left off on??? :rotfl: I mentally note the page # but I have yet to remember what it was when I get back to the computer.

Also I noticed some of you have fabric stashes. I understand this concept I've got into hairbows since I had my 1st baby girl and you should see my stash already. (I buy lots of the basic ribbons and enough of the fun accent ribbon to make 3 or 4 extra bows because I do intend to sell them in the fall when the kiddos go back to school)However when you find fabric you like how much do you buy of it??? I have no intention of selling my outfits so I can't imagine buying a whole bolt but how much should I pick up. What's a typical amount I would need for an outfit??? I've been to some fabric stores and I understand the addiction I've picked up a few I like already but I've only bought a yard or two (okay I did buy 5 yards of minnie dots:rolleyes1 )

Thanks for all the advice.
Jennifer

I usually buy 2-3 yds. I have a sew now stash and also maybe I'll have grandkids one day stash. The grandkids stash is,of course,my Disney stuff.

I just need to vent about my buttonholer. I've got a 1967 Singer machine. (It's a number of years older than I am). Let's just say it does *not* have a one-step buttonhole mechanism. It's more like 482 steps. It comes with its own instruction manual.

DS is still bugging for a camp shirt, so I bought the interfacing I need. I'm ready to get started. But I thought I'd try a quick easier project tonight. I've got a pattern for a pair of drawstring shorts (for me) that have you put in button holes for the draw string to feed through. It claims to be a 1-hour project. Ha! I spent longer than that and I don't even have the buttonhole done! That's Step 2!

So anyway, I thought that'd be a good starter buttonhole project, but even before that I thought I'd just do a few practice ones. So I read the whole manual, set the whole button hole thing up -- and spent about an hour and a half fussing with it... and I still don't have a buttonhole. :( :( :(

I seem to be having two problems:
1) I can't seem to get the bobbin thread to catch (although I'm following the instructions and it occassionally works.) And in order to open the bobbin cover to make sure everything's looking okay down there, I have to take the whole buttonholer contraption off.
2) When I finally raise the bobbin thread and start sewing, the needle thread breaks. It's really weird though because it's not a clean break, it's as though it starts separating and balling up (it's decent thread, too -- Coats & Clark, or whatever.)

Anyway -- I finally gave up for tonight -- after the little base plate shifted (guess I didn't have it screwed down quite tight enough) and the needle broke. The broken part of the needle scratched my eyelid when it flew away, too. (Thank heaven for quick reflexes, I guess). Maybe I'm going to have to start wearing safetly goggles. Ugh!

Thanks for reading. Rant over.

I'm sorry you are having so much trouble  It's frustrating when things don't go right, especially if it's the machine's fault! Have you tried sewing buttonholes with a close together zigzag stitch? I've done that when the buttonholer wasn't cooperating with me. Mark on the fabric where the buttonhole should be, the whole thing, just draw a straight line. Then, set your machine to zigzag down one side with really close together stitches (you might want to practice on a scrap to see what width and length looks best) then at the bottom of your marking, set your stitch width wider to go across the bottom of you buttonhole marking and the stitch length to zero so you are sewing a few stitches in the same spot. Then, turn the fabric around and do the other side. (Hope that made sense!)

And, I hope your eye is ok! That could have been bad!

And, here is a link I added to the bookmars in your honor, it's called, "Buttonholes are our Friends" http://indietutes.blogspot.com/2007/07/buttonholes-are-our-friends.html

I made something!!

I tried the halter pattern that LadyRob had. I went to JoAnn's and couldn't find any fabric that I loved. I chose a Disney Fairies print to practice on.
So, how bad is it?!?

Really super cute!!! You did a great job for your first time and I hope you keep at it!!

Your the second or third person to suggest some red so that's got to be what's missing. I will try adding the rick rack or an apple applique.

This is not just for LadyRob, but for everyone and you might already do this. But if I'm not sure what I want to add, I pin it on and leave it hanging somewhere for a couple of days. That way I can make sure I like it before I sew it down permanently. Right now, I have an entire Donald Duck set for dd2 pinned together in my sewing room just waiting for my final "ok, I like that"!

You're so great for finding all of these tutorials for us!!!!

No pattern. Just measured my length cut and sewed it together. I have yet to use a pattern. They scare me a little. lol :goodvibes

They scare me too!! I bought one last Friday, but I've yet to use it.

Here's one way to do it. When you come back to the thread on the main list on the Disney for Families board, there will be a little blue box with an arrow pointing down on it right before the name of this thread. Click that little blue box and it "should" bring you back to the last place that you were before you left the last time.

I had no clue about this!!!!!! I keep a notepad by the computer and I would always write down the post# (pages can slip by easily) so I'd know where to come back to!

Well, I am still not sewing, but I have been busy today! Here are my latest creations.

You really should try to make some bows with those princess things. I think that would be way too cute!!!

Hello Everybody!:cheer2: :cheer2:

I am Alicat99's Mom and I wanted to thank you for all your nice comments regarding the Mickey Dresses I just finished. I am hoping to get that dress as well as some of my other designs up on Ebay this week. There are little boys shortall and matching capri sets for girls. One of them is a really cute Pirate Mickey with the treasure map fabric. Thank you! Again, NanasCustomCreations princess:

:welcome: I've added you to my favorite sellers already!! Can't wait to see what else you come up with!

I got these dresses off Ebay.
Can you tell a difference? I feel like the second dress is not "filled" in all the way with the Minnie Mouse wording. I contacted the seller and she said that the second one is a tighter embroidery because the bigger dresses are heavier and the machine pulls a little harder to do the embroidery. I don't know anything about embroidery.

I don't think I would've noticed anything had you not pointed it out. Ask your dd if she likes it and if so, then that's all that matters! I would ask the seller for a partial refund or possible replacement if you are really unsatisfied, though.

I also have the same machine. I am surprised that she will sell on ebay using those designs. I had to sign something stating I would not sell using that machine and there is no way I would sell on ebay! :scared1:

Anyways, I think the tension and the stablizer were not great. The machine can sometimes be off a bit, but the 2nd does not look nearly as nice. If the fabric was different she should have stablized the second better, hence it wouldn't have pulled like that! I don't tend to ever adjust my tension. I just stablize better.

I am not sure what you paid for them, don't feel it is the best work, but customs can sometimes be off, that is why they are handmade customs. I have only ever made 2 customs not for my son, mainly due to time, but if it were not good I would not send it. I would start over. I like to have mine made and then sell.

If you don't want to use your button holer (is that a word) then just use tight zigzag stitches, close together. I don't like mine on one of my machines so I just use zigzag stitches, they all aren't perfectly the same size, but very close, just practice first. I just go up across, down and across again, then rip it open, just like you would a buttonhole.

Hope this helps!

If you go to my bookmarks site (link in my siggy or on the first page of this thread) there is a section called skirts/pettiskirts and tutus. There are several patterns there.

But, basically for the tie one, you just cut strips of tulle twice the lenth you want them, then loop tie them around a pice of elastic cut to your child's waist size (I found it easiest to sew the elasic it before putting the tulle on).

For the sewn ones, I took a couple pieces of tulle, cut across to twice the length I wanted, plus about an inch (for the casing) Then, I fold it in half and sew a casing a little more than the width of your elastic. make a few of these pieces, then start putting your elastic through the casing. If it's not full enough, cut some more tulle, sew the casing and stick it on. It was SOOOO much easier than tieing!

Thanks for the instructions! I will have to try it out.

I think it looks okay, I would keep it or you can just resell it on ebay if you aren't happy. It looked very reasonably priced, I wouldn't have made for that. It would have been nice if she had explained before shipping that the larger one would look slightly different.

Love them all! Cute shoes:cutie: Where did you get the plastic princesses? Plastic Princesses, that sounds weird. Maybe a good name for a band, though.

Thanks for the buttonholes-without-a-buttonholer tutorial and ideas. I think I might try that today. And yay about the patchwork tutorial skirt. :)

Buffy0214 -- My DS wonders what the character is in the middle picture in your siggy? I don't recognize him.

That's a Power Ranger-he is a wolf ranger from PR Wildforce! We were so excited when they had meet and greet in MGM. They also had pink, red, green and white, I think. I changed my siggy so everyone knows, now:thumbsup2

Are the designs exactly the same size? If the second one is larger then the sell may not have increased the thread density when she enlarged the design. Tho, I am very finicky when it comes to making anything...LOL just ask AliKat99 I was still "tweaking" her wedding dress 3 days before the wedding! Her quote to me was "perfection is highly overrated"

I've had trouble with my machine doing this. I took it back to the Sewing Machine Dr. and they said that I'm not pulling the fabric tight enough. If I pull it any tighter, it will rip. I've tried different stabilizers, so I don't know what the problem is. Sometimes it fills in great, and other times it doesn't.

Have you tried "floating" a second piece of stablizer under the hoop in addition to the stablizer/garment in the hoop? For knits I use a heavy iron on cutaway (Decobond) and then again as the "floating" piece with the iron on side up(so I can iron it on after I am done. I also "grade" the stablizer layers for a better look.

These are the tutu's I made the other night. The first one is tied, the other two are sewn.

Come on guys, don't you think these three little girls are adorable????:confused3 :rotfl2:

They are totally adorable and the outfits look wonderful!
