I really don't think that you need a pattern to recreate that corset. I think doing what you described will work just fine.

I am looking for a simple shorts pattern for my DN. Problem is her waist is 35" and nothing matches to that measurement. One pattern even said a women's size 22-24. She is definitely not that big. When I look at the finished measurements, it seems to make more sense size wise. Should I be looking only at finished measurements??

I would start by looking at the pattern in her regular size. I don't pay too much attention to the measurements. I measured myself one time and compared it to the back of the pattern. :scared1: I will never do that again! I made myself a shirt in the size I normally buy and it fit beautifully.

For my kids I have had some problems with things being too big on them.

I think some of the other ladies make things by measuring and cutting and sewing without a pattern. I am not that skilled yet.

I have made several diaper bags and that is the problem, eventually they flop over. I noticed yours stood up really well:thumbsup2 I like a good stiff bag ya know ;) Do you know the name of the interfacing you used for the Mickey bag? I love it. DId you just use the directions Princessfsw posted for the cute little apple bag?

Thanks.

I used the square bottom bag tutorial on sewingmamas.com . The tutorial is great. Would post it here but don't know how. I am working on myself a Minnie one now. I will post it when done.

I threw out the plastic directions but the interfacing came on a roll at Hancock. It is REALLY THICK!!! I thought there is no way but it worked! It is Pellon (non fusable) and I don't remember the number. I think it is usually $4-$5 a yard and I got it on sale for about $3. Hope this helps. The longest part of making the bag to me is cutting it out and ironing on the interfacing.

Hi All:

Just a novice sewer here, but I have been amusing myself looking at all these cute, cute clothes (we have boys--sigh. . .lots of jon-jons and shortalls).

Anywho. . . my sister is adopting internationally this fall and had already seen the It's a Small World fabric online to make nursery bedding out of, but we have not been able to find it in any fabric stores in this area (Charlotte, NC). I was already on assignment to look around Orlando a little when we are down there this September.
I tried to scroll back through and find where you guys were buying it in this thread, but I could not figure it out. Anyone mind sharing where you got the fabric, especially if you were able to buy it in a store? She would really like to see it in person before she buys 5 or 6 yards to make a whole nursery set.

thanks!
Stacey

I have a few pages to read (again!) but wanted to post this question first. What's a good thread? I'm using Coats & Clark. It keeps breaking when I applique and last night it kept breaking during a regular straight stitch! I was gathering a slightly heavier fabric, but still. Annoying. So what thread should I be using? Keep in mind I only have a Joann's around here. Our Super Walmart stopped carrying fabric. :sad1: I also have a Michaels, but not sure if they sell thread?

Chantell

*You guys just keep blowing me away with your outfits. :worship:

*I second the question about C & C thread. Mine did the same thing -- it kept breaking every time I tried to pull the ruffle. I eventually switched to the dental floss (mint flavored - that's all we had).

* When will I be able to learn how much fabric to buy? I've made 2 Harry Potter-type cloaks, 2 blankets, the Nemo outfit and I'm working on a cow t-shirt dress. I have SOOOOOOO much fabric left over?

TIA

Regarding the thread, I really like Gutterman. It is available at Joanns. I have never had it break. Last night I was using some Coats and Clark because I already had it in red and didn't want to buy more. It broke and I noticed the thread was caught in the little nick they make in the spool to keep it from unraveling. So it wouldn't feed through the machine and broke.

I turned the spool around and presto it worked great.

Regarding how much fabric, if you are using a pattern the chart on the back will tell you how much to buy according to which size you are making.

If you aren't using a pattern then I guess you just have to do the math! Most fabrics are 44" or 45" wide and then a yard is 36"

I am not sure about the applique or the tshirt dress I have only made some simple appliques so far and I haven't tried the t shirt dress. Sorry it is rolling up it must be frustrating. Someone else may be able to help.

I thought I'd share my budget sewing space. I would love to have a space like the seamstress, but for right now this will have to do!

I went to Wal-mart and bought a set of shelves (around $60)and some baskets ($5 each). For about $100 I have a pretty organized area! I keep all of my supplies in the baskets right at my reach. I have the big basket next to the table for my "upcoming projects" and I keep all of my extra fabric, patterns (tons of them because I can't turn down a $.99 pattern) and projects that I may or may not get to in the future in large plastic bins in my laundry room.

The card table is exactly the right size so my dh and my Dad are going to make me a black table that is just the same size. I am a lucky girl with a Daddy who is a trim carpenter who recently retired with lots of time on his hands! I need to get a good chair that turns too. My bedroom furniture that I am going to buy whenever I quit spending all of our extra money on sewing supplies, is going to be black so it should all look like it goes together.

This is the sewing machine that I have had for about 5 years now. I love love love  it. My biggest suggestion to a new sewing would be to go to several sewing machine stores and let them help you find what machine fits your needs. You can always go someplace and try to find the best deal after you find what works for you. If you buy it from them, they will usually give you free lessons on the machine!

sewingspace008.jpg

This is the Disney sewing machine that I bought off of ebay a while back! I can't tell you how it works because I haven't had the nerve to try to work with it yet. I thought it would be fun for embroidery, but now I don't know what to do with it!

I'm off to take my girls to the dentist. I really really really would rather be sewing today!

Congrats to your sis! Our DD is our gift through international adoption as well (China)! She's in for an amazing journey!

As far as the fabric goes - I saw it at Hancock fabric the other day. After seeing all these cute outfits, I'm headed back there again today to buy some!

I hate Coats and clark. if you pay a little extra for a better brand it will cause you less trouble. I use guttermens and also if thread is old it will break easy no matter what the brand. Sometimes to help it run a little smoother I have been known to use Tri-Flow. IT is a thread lubriqent(sp) and it will help it run better throug hthe machine, but be carefull not to put toooo much otherwise it could run on the clothes!

It must really depend on your machine. I have never had a problem with Coats and Clark so for me it wouldn't make sense to spend more $$$ on gutterman. Everybody should at least try to C & C and see if it works for you. I would hate for somebody to spend so much more $$$ for no reason. I feel bad for those of you who have to spend so much on thread!

I know what you mean! I can't bring myself to cut it up for appliques!
:scared: I really want to do something with the whole piece, but DD already has a few pillowcase dresses, so I was thinking something different...hmmm...still looking for the perfect idea.

I like the idea of capris...I know you don't like the thought of cutting it but if you look in the photo album I think Nana used it in a cute stripwork dress.

:wizard: When I was planning my DD's outfits last night I had a brilliant idea.

A Fantasmic Outfit!!!

BRILLIANT!! I LOVE IT!!!

I am an Aimee too! Just to let everyone know Amy was the second most popular girls baby name of the 1970's.

My parents named me after a Pure Prarie Leauge song!!! I always giggle when I hear it on the radio. I even saved their record.

Well I have a girlfriend named Melissa after the Alman Bros song- at her wedding they played it and her WHOLE (BIG ITALIAN) family got up and danced around her - like a group hug, kinda... it made me cry and now I cry every time I hear that song- so there's somethin' to be said for being named after a song!! and one of my BF's name is Amy (well, it's shortened to it)

I think it was very thoughtful of you to notice other custom designers. I'm sure it made their day!
Love these outfits- and I'm still deciding on what to do w/ my minnie dot so...;)

We haven't made any def. plans yet, but we are probably going to go the first weekend in March for ESPN the weekend. I am trying to decide what kind of things the girls will need for that time of year. I am kinda hoping that capri jeans will be o.k. because I have some really cute ideas!
Depending on how heat tolerant your kiddos are (I can -and do- wear jeans all summer here, except to the parks!!) Capri's should be okay. I think I might use khaki's though instead of jeans- a little less hot.

This is the BEST version of this skirt I've seen!! I LOVE the pluto poodle!!! Great idea!!

Too many posts, still reading. LOTS of great stuff out there guys! and TONS of newbies- WELCOME to all of you!

...t.

Here are my latest outfits for my DS3. His are so much easier since I'm just appliqueing (sp) onto a T-shirt but I'm trying to think of different things besides just a Mickey head.

Anyone have any ideas what I could do for him for CRT. The girls are wearing dresses made from the purple princess toile. Since we have 2 girls, he is a BOY, my husband won't do anything too fancy for him. :)

Here are a few more pictures from our last week trip.

I adapted the licensed pattern for the Snow White outfit. I made it in cotton and the two fabrics actually have a subtle print. I don't know why, but when I saw them at Joann I immediately thought "Snow White." We lost the knot cover for the cape so my daughter kept yanking the cape back on her neck.

I love this Snow White outfit. Did you make it two piece? How did you do the tiers of the skirt?

I like gutterman & sulky & Madeira threads for my embroidery machine.
But for my hand-guided appliques & regular sewing, I prefer the non-shiny look.
I stick with A&E's Maxi-Lock, it's on a cone ...
A&E also, make a Jo-Ann's branded version too (A&E thread, Jo-Ann's Labels) ...
it's a bit better than Coats' TALON Sure-Lock Coned Thread ...
All three are nicely priced for the amount you get.
(3000yd cones = Coat's Talon $2 @ Wallymart, Joann's A&E "overlock thread" is $2 ... Maxi-Lock usually $2.50-$3 & sold at Joann's, Hancocks, Field's, etc.)
I use it for my bobbin thread, as well.
I get great results with it.
You might want to try it. :)

I am wondering if it is the thread content that affects the breaking? I have used 100% cotton for quilting, but use 100% cotton with a silk finish by Mettler for heirloom sewing. Then for embroidery I make sure I have a poly blend. But I love the 100% poly Mettler. It never breaks for me. I make sure I have a bunch of that.

piratetutu.jpg

I posted this pirate set. We bought it on eBay and its soooo cute! I'd be glad to take some close up pics of the corset if you think that might help. :confused3 I know she used little eyelets, but other than that, it *looks* pretty simple.

I really like Simplicity 3680 like someone just suggested. We're actually modifying the top on it to make a ruffle shirt for DD. The corset looks very similar - just add the tulle skirt!

Let me know if I can (try to answer) specific questions or if I can post some pictures you think might help. pirate:

I LOVE my new Mickey purse:love: . I cannot wait to use it tomorrow. I made the pink one for my mom--it matches her scrubs. I also made the halloween one for her-- she loves candy corn. I love making these. It is alot of fun!!! ---- Mindy

Great job on the bags. They really are easy once you do one. I love to make them and then end up never using them. My girls are using some of my larger ones to cart around Webkinz, so at lease they are being used.

I used fusable interfacing on both layers (outer and lining) and was pleased with that. On the Mickey one (it is for me:earsboy: ) I used some really thick interfacing that was not fusable. It was kind of a pain but that purse sure stands up straight!!! I most likely will stick to the fusable on both layers. :)

If you use the fleece interfacing I would not recommend putting it on both layers it would get way too thick. Use the fleece on outside and a thin one of the lining inside. JMO.

I have made several diaper bags and that is the problem, eventually they flop over. I noticed yours stood up really well:thumbsup2 I like a good stiff bag ya know ;) Do you know the name of the interfacing you used for the Mickey bag? I love it. Thanks.

The interfacing that you can use to make it stand up is a fusible fleece. I think that I got mine at a quilt store. I'm sure that they probably have it at Joann's. I almost looks like quilting batting but it is firmer.

Grandmouse, The Snow White outfit is two pieces. I used the bodice pattern pieces from the costume dress pattern and cut two of each so that I would have a lining.

I did not use the skirt pattern pieces, but instead used the same pattern that I used for the Minnie tiered rhumba tops but adapted it to make it a skirt. The tiered rhumba tops are basically a tube with ruffles sewn on the outside, so instead of adding the straps I added several inches to the top of the tube to allow for a waist casing. Does that make sense? I don't know if it would work on a larger child, but since my little one is a straight up and down little stick of a girl it worked fine.

Can anyone tell me how to make these? I know to use bottle caps and drill a hole but I have never made jewelry unless you count things made with pony beads :) .
What type and size beads do you need? What do you string them on? What type of tools do you need? Clasps? Basically I need step by step and materials info.
My daughter saw them and fell in love.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Amy

I used to use coats and clark for years. love it then a lady told me to try the others and see what I think. I think the gutterman is stronger and less prown to breaking. It holds up a little better and when the thread is on sale at joanne's it isn't that much more for the guttermans and usually there is more on there spool.

Hello! I'd love for you to post close ups of the corset! I can now do a tulle tutu skirt, and the corset likes like the toughest thing to that outfit. However when someone earlier explained how they thought it could be done, I though, "Well maybe..."
