i just read on Pinterest that at dinner that kid sized portions of adult choices were available. Has anyone experienced this? If so could you plead explain what your experience was. I have a lap band and want to be able to experience the wonderful foods but hate wasting food.

I've never noticed that they bring smaller portions if a child orders off the "adult" menu. I have noticed that, if an adult orders off the kid's menu, they do serve a double portion, however.

If you wish to have smaller portions, just address the issue with your server, they should be able to accommodate you.

Our kids continually ordered off the "lighter note" part of the adults menu. Seemed like full portions to me.

I made a reference to wasting food at Palo last month. My server (brunch) chuckled and said that all the food gets thrown away. The smash it all up and feed it to the fishes. In another dining experience, I asked my server for a recommendation between 2 entree choices. He said, "I'll just bring you both." That happened a couple of times with different members of my party. They have such a ludicrous amount of food apparently, so if it doesn't go on your plate, it's going on Nemo's.

You could note it on your reservation under the dining requests tab and then tell your server the first night.
I am not sure they could bring out smaller portions, as I think they are pre sized and arranged for quick service but it would be worth noting and giving it a try.

If they are unable to accomodate you with a smaller portion for some reason, you could always cut your meal in half and ask for a second plate to put it on. That plate could go to another person in your party OR just don't eat it.

On the Wonder last month I was the last person to go through the lunch
Buffet. I sat at a table next to the serving line and watched as EVERYTHING was dumped into one container. Crab legs, half of a ham, all the breads, all the sliced cheese, salads, etc etc were all tossed. It was actually kind of amazing to watch.

I need portion control. I love food. Since I was raised as part of the "Clean Plate Club", I tend to clean my plate w/o thinking about it. If I had smaller portions, I would be much happier.

If you're staying at a place with a fridge, you can always ask for half to be boxed up and eat it later...or just ask for a smaller portion from the get go...but they may not give you a cheaper price because you want less. I'd assume they'll just bring you the regular portion, especially if it's a cut of meat and you just eat the amount that you can.

On one cruise I was quite upset with how much food I was wasting with the adult portions and our server said that he could not get me a smaller portion. So ever since then, I eat something from the appetizer/salad menu for the main course and I feel much better about the amount that I eat. Never overly full.

I am a member of that club too. :) So I have learned how to adjust to get only what I need to have to feel full. I am also on Nutrisystem and this has given me a clear picture of exactly what size portion will fill me up. :)

When I go on cruises, I make only ONE trip to the buffet and get a small (half a serving spoon that is in the bowl) and put it on my plate. At lunch I will get a wrap and some fruit. At dinner, I will get soup, an entrée and a dessert if it looks appealing. I limit myself to 1 soft serve ice cream a day and my major indulgence seems to be the Mickey Rice krispie treats that we get at the CC Gold and Platinum welcome.
I also take the stairs as much as possible and get my 10,000 steps a day in in excercise. It is easy to do that even without walking Deck 4 and going to the fitness center. The most recent cruise I gained 2 lbs in 7 days. (I also like the popcorn at the movies and like to have some with my son when we see the movie) lol

You are ultimately in control and can manage just fine with eating the food but in smaller amounts. Don't let the pressure of feeling like you have to eat to make everyone happy get to you. You know your limits and you are in control.
But for heavens sake have fun and enjoy trying new things. Don't feel compelled to stay in the club though. :)

I always ask to see a children's menu. Then I mix and match. Its not all
chicken nuggets and pizza. I have had the beef dinner, the pork dinner, and
in the afternoon the kids burger in the dining room. The also have a small
mixed salad on the kids menu and usually a good soup.

I have cruised post VSG. The servers were rough on my small appetite, just kept digging and digging until I told them I had surgery, like telling them I had a small appetite was not enough. I didn't even request anything special just left a lot on my plate. This next cruise I am going to tell them right away that I don't eat a lot, there will be food left over and it doesn't require mentioning. I don't want to be rude but it was uncomfortable.

Anyways, I lost 5 lbs that week with the Castaway 5K, running around with all the ship activities and light eating (really didn't want to risk 'dumping syndrome'). Have a blast!!! I am sure you earned it!

I have IBS and can not eat a lot of food in one sitting or I get sick- I have to eat 6 -8 small meals. I told my server on our first night that I can't eat a lot of food due to a medical condition and he was very respectful about it. He would bring me smaller portions of the entree if he could, or he would give me a second plate and I would put half the food on that plate and he would take it away immediately. Never said a condescending word about it. His name was Abhay from India. I am going to try to request him on our next cruise- hopefully he is still there!

but hate wasting food.
For some of us - this is really hard (I remember all of those staving children in China, Africa, India, ... from when I was growing up)

But just like the prices of food at WDW / DL (day one: :scared1:, day 5: wow that seems reasonable :lmao:), you get used to it over time and "waste" becomes "normal"

and remember you are not only "wasting" food that was served to you, backstage in the kitchens there has to be oh so much more "waste" (uneaten food that gets tossed out).

I regularly order off the kids menu and have never had my portion doubled!

As to the OP's question. My mom had gastric bypass years ago. She always tells the servers the very first meal that she eats incredibly small portions due to a medical condition. She's never been offered a smaller portion option. She wants to try things and does, and just nibbles at them. Usually the first two nights the server is incredibly concerned its because she doesn't like things and wants to bring her others. She always reassures him/her that she can't eat more than tiny portions. After the first couple days they don't worry anymore and she just eats what she likes.

My daughter's mac & cheese from the kid's menu:

And, on our past Fantasy cruise, I was having some stomach issues, so ordered several times from the kids' menu, specifically asking to have a child's portion, but was given double. I guess it may depend on your server, but, I was told that's what he had to serve to an adult.

That's never been my experience PrincesSchmoo, nor anyone in my travel group, but I would think if your server insists a conversation with the Head Server would clear up the issue quickly.

It really wasn't that big an issue to me. I'm just reporting that it happens.
