Kicking off a summer of healthy living - June W.I.S.H Thread

Harder would be eating. It tends to be too hot to cook or too hot that we are just more lazy and don't want to cook so we end up eating out.

Easier I think is walking. DH and I walk together when we can get outside and it keeps me moving. In the winter I start fighting to not go for walks when it gets down in to the 40's and then refuse to go if the sidewalks are covered in snow and if it is into the 30's.

Woohooing that I have hit my monthly walking goal already this month. I am still going to get my 25 minutes a day (if not more) and then next month go up to 30 minutes a day. I started this in April with 15 minutes a day and then 20 in May and have hit my goal each month. I want to get up to 60 minutes a day and doing it this way has really helped. I will get derailed a bit in September when I have surgery and will have to start slow again but that is ok. At least I will still be move some.

Also woohooing that the doctors have finally figured out the infection that I have and got me on the right meds. I am really feeling back to myself. Also woohoo that the ultrasound of my gallbladder (doctor was worried about it since when she pushed in that area it hurt) came back normal. I was worried for a minute that I was going to have to have 2 surgeries this year.

~~~ It's Topic Tuesday ~~~
Now that summer is officially here, it often means adjusting routines and expectations. So what do you find easier, and what do find harder, about staying healthy in the summer?
This part time job is going to make all the difference for me. I'm constantly moving except for when the kids have breakfast and lunch and sometimes in the classroom. I am in charge of K-2. In addition to that group, I provide early morning care which is for all grades K-8 and my challenge team is also K-8. The challenges take place in the gym, so I'm always on my feet. It's a 5 hour shift with no breaks except for me sneaking away to the bathroom for two seconds, so there's no time to eat except to quickly have an apple while they eat lunch. This job provides so much structure for me and prevents me from just sitting around reading or watching tv and then eating my way throughout the day. My only problem is that when I get home, I am famished and that yogurt looks so unsatisfying. I could totally make bad choices at that point. I need to make a better plan for lunch that will still be low in calories but will really fill me up so I don't do anything stupid. Once I do that, I think I will continue to lose weight over the summer instead of putting the pounds back on like I did last year.
WOO HOO!!! I like my summer job! I'm actually surprised. The training was MANY HOURS LONG, and I'm still not completely done because the director doesn't know which concussion training I need to take. The amount of onboarding paperwork and training which seems infinite, has been brutal and time-consuming. But, in the long run, I think it will be worth it.
WOO HOO!!! I like the kids. I only have one difficult student who is a very large boy functioning at toddler level, and is mostly non-verbal. He's physically aggressive and destroys anything he touches. He isn't aware that he is doing anything wrong, but he either needs a one-on-one staff or a different program. I have another student with severe special needs starting soon, but he's coming with a paraprofessional which will make all of the difference. The rest of the kids are nothing I can't handle. I'm able to be fun, warm, engaging, and very firm all at the same time. I don't yell. I find that giving kids "the look" works most of the time, and when it doesn't, my firm teacher voice works well. Everyone (staff and kids alike) have learned very quickly that I don't mess around. The director appreciates my approach because most of the staff resort to screaming which is entirely ineffective. Even in the gym when staff are screaming for kids to be quiet, I just stand there and blow my playground whistle. Then I calmly address the group. It works like a charm.
WOO HOO!!! I like most of my coworkers. I'm the only veteran teacher...actually, I'm the only teacher. The staff is made up of undergrad and grad students or paraprofessionals. Already they are following my example and learning from me. I don't correct anyone. I just try to be a good role model. They see that what I do is effective, and before I know it, they are using the same strategies.
WOO HOO!!! I have Wednesdays off! They go on field trips on Wednesdays, and I'm SO GLAD that instead of dealing with the chaos of a weekly field trip, I get a nice break mid-week when NOBODY ELSE IS HOME. I do love my alone time, just not too much of it or I will get into trouble.
WOO HOO!!! The outrageous heatwave🥵 is breaking tomorrow!
Woohoo... after two weeks of not sleeping well (since the fall) I got in a pretty good night last night. And woohoo there was a big improvement with my leg yesterday.
Woohoo... a couple more days of cool overcast weather and then we go back to sunny and low 70's. And woohoo... I got a couple new tower style fans and really like them.
Evidently my little town does the 4th of July up in a big way, starting with a street dance party the evening of the 3rd. Woohoo to living so close to town that I can wander down at will and not have to worry about parking.
