We did the Back to Nature Kayak Excursion when aboard the Western Magic Cruise April 23rd. We took a motor launch to a mooring boat, which was about a 30 minute trip. We were definitely in the ocean; not a canal. We were taken to "islands" made up of mangroves, which consist of million of mangrove seedlings, and cannot be inhabited. We saw a nurse shark, and several exotic birds. It was a very enjoyable, tranquil trip. I would add that it is best to go paired because the kayaks hold two people and we were a threesome. My DD and DH were paired together and did not handle the kayak very well. They dumped it twice trying to go through a narrow canal. I thought it was pretty funny because I was paired with a single dad who was quite capable. It's not overly demanding and just the right length of time; as we were back on the ship by 4 p.m. I hadn't read much of anything about this excursion on the list serve and finally decided to try it nonetheless. I'd say it's definitely better than going into town to do a trolley tour. The biggest factor is the number of sealife and wildlife you get to see, which varies from week to week.
