We are heading down to WDW in May. It looks like there may be a shuttle launch during out trip. I have never done this before. How long does it take to get there? I am assuming I need to rent a car to get there/ any other transportation options. DS6 is very interested in space so we may do this side trip for him. Is it worth it? Can you see the space shuttle lauch from any place in WDW? Any advice info would be appreciated.:confused3

There are suggested viewing sites on the NASA website, I think it is www.nasa.gov. We viewed it in Titusville, just pulled off on the highway, and were able to see the launch pads. It is truly a great experience!

Be warned that the traffic is horrible. It can take three or four hours to get back to Orlando. Plus, the launch is visible from the pool at your hotel. Nevertheless, it is cool to see the big shuttle lift off. My son and I had been fishing, and pulled off in Titusville to watch. We felt the thrusters before we saw the ship lift off. Even the water in the lagoon was visibly vibrating.

Yes, just pull off the road in Titusville by the water. You'll know when you see all the cars, it's a circus atmosphere and the previous poster is right about the traffic. Best to plan to eat at a slow sit down restaurant right after the launch and let the traffic get a chance to disipate a bit before heading back. It took us 3 hours and the cars were bumper to bumper-yikes! We saw the launch last June and it was awesome. Not to be missed. There's a radio broadcast from NASA that you can tune into while watching it.
