Keep Calm and Go to Disney! 10/21 - 11/4/14 COMPLETE

Ugh - sorry to hear about your breakfast! We haven't been to WCC since probably 2005 or 2006 when we put it on our "never again" list mostly because of the dinner skillet. I have been debating going back for breakfast in August (finally have our trip booked after no trips in 2014!) but your review has made me decide on The Wave instead!

So many places! Well done! I am going back in February and staying at the Wilderness Lodge for the first time. I can't wait to try Whispering Canyon for the First time!

Yikes, what a disaster at Whispering Canyon. I hope you didn't ask for ketchup to go with that ; ) Was contemplating giving it a whirl next month for our trip - hubby loves breakfast, i love bloody marys ; ) If we do I know what exactly to not order.

Can't wait to see what the best meal was...

Sorry to hear breakfast wasn't great. Looking forward to hearing about lunch. :) We went to Whispering Canyon the first time we visited WL but was not impressed at all and we never made it back on subsequent trips. It's too bad because I love WL. :sad1:

Years ago we loved the made to order breakfast @ WCC, but it changed since. Too bad it wasn't good this time. The other 2  breakfasts from before look very good though.

It always disappointing when you spend money on food and it's not good. Well, at least the waffles were yummy! Can't wait for the next updatepopcorn::

Sorry to hear about breakfast at WCC. WCC is one resturant at Disney that I will refuse to return to after a failure in 2012.

Boo on the WCC breakfast! I cannot stand runny eggs either. Blech!

We ended up having breakfast at WCC twice during our October trip. In fact, we had breakfast there the day before you did, but around 10:30am. I have to agree with you about the potatoes. They are really tasteless. Some nice traditional hash browns would be much better. But my scrambled eggs were really good - creamy and cooked properly - not runny. I liked the bacon but not the sausage. The Mickey waffle was very good. I've also ordered a gluten-free Mickey waffle from WCC and that was very good, too. :)

Our daughter and DSIL ordered the breakfast platter and they loved the sausage, ordering more than one refill. I was not a big fan of it, though.

I would have thought that eating there early (at opening) the food would be hot and fresh but I guess that's not always the case. It sounds like you had a much better breakfast later in the morning. :confused3

Hi Vicki! Good to hear from you! :goodvibes So glad you are planning another trip. Regarding The Wave, that is the one place that I wanted to go on this trip but never made it there. I'll be anxious to hear how your breakfast is.

Oh, I bet you will love the Wilderness Lodge! :thumbsup2 As for WCC, both my previous breakfast and lunch there were good so I haven't given up on it yet.

Hmm...I do see now that WCC has both Bloody Marys and Mimosas on their breakfast menu. I wish I would have noticed that then. It would have definitely helped this breakfast. ;)

While breakfast this time was very disappointing, it was good last time so I haven't given up on WCC completely. I'm in no hurry to return, but I will probably give it another try someday.

Yes, whenever I do return to WCC for breakfast I will probably stick to the french toast or waffles. ;)

Yes, the Mickey waffle was yummy! Looking back now, it was probably best that I had only the one waffle for breakfast because lunch that day was epic! ::yes::

Oh, must have been bad...really bad! :worried:

Yes, boo to that entire breakfast platter, except for the Mickey waffle. Mickey gets a :cheer2:

"A Tale of Three Meals"

For the second installment of this tale I will be reviewing my French Regional Lunch at Epcot's Monsieur Paul.

This was a special Food & Wine Festival event which had to be booked and pre-paid for in advance. After checking in at Monsieur Paul's desk (located behind France's other full-service restaurant, Chefs de France), I proceeded up the winding staircase to the restaurant. I first must admit to all of you that I was very apprehensive regarding this meal. I had visions of being served snails for one or more of the courses. But on the other hand, I am a fan of champagne, and as you may have noticed from the above photo, this lunch would feature champagne. So I reasoned with myself that if I was forced (out of politeness) to eat escargot at this meal, I would at least be able to wash it down with a glass of bubbly. ;) In other words, my love of champagne won out over my aversion to eating slimy snails. :snail:

But much to my relief, the first thing I noticed as I was being shown to my pre-assigned seat was that there was nothing that looked like escargot on the display table...

I was the first to be seated at a table for four...

Upon seeing the menu, I received further confirmation that I was safe...

Soon I was joined at the table by three other guests, two ladies and one gentlemen, all of them there solo like me. Now it might have been the many glasses of champagne that we consumed, but by the end of this meal the four of us seemed like BFF's. And speaking of champagne, it was very good and surprisingly it was free-flowing...our glasses were not allowed to be less than half full. But more on that later. ;)

Let's bring on the food now, starting with a warm, delicious mini-baguette...

...and an amuse-bouche.

There was no description for this on the menu and we were never told what it was. However, it tasted like mushroom soup topped with a dollop of whipped avocado. It was quite good. The first champagne was served along with the soup...

Nicolas Feuillatte, Brut Reserve

But it gets even better with our next course...

Quail eggs croustade atop a mixed green salad

I would call this Quail Eggs Benedict in a pastry tart shell and again it was very good. The champagne which accompanied this course was supposed to be the Nicolas Feuillatte Brut Chardonnay, Blanc de Blancs but they were unable to get this so served the Brut Rose instead. (sorry no photo)

Then it was time for the entree course...

Lamb Tenderloin with a truffle and parmesan crust, served with Herb gnocchis

This was absolutely wonderful!!! I didn't think anything could top the tender, delicious lamb...

...but then I took my first taste of the gnocchi and I had to admit that I was wrong. The gnocchi was even more delicious and this (half) Italian girl was in heaven. :cloud9: Oh, and remember how I bragged that the profiterole dessert served at the Italian Regional lunch was better than any French profiterole I've had? Well, I'll have to now add that the best gnocchi I've ever had was made by a French restaurant. Go figure??? ;)

Anyway, this course was served with Brut Cuvee...

For the finale we were presented with this beauty...

White Chocolate and Raspberry Napoleon with vanilla and raspberry ice cream

And another look...

This tasted as good as it looked. Although the entree was still my favorite course, the dessert was a very close second.

Nicolas Feuillatte's D'Luscious, a Demi-Sec Rose, was paired with the napoleon but again I forgot to take a photo when it was served. However, I did remember to take a photo of the four empty bottles on our table... :faint:

I have no idea how many glasses of champagne I had that afternoon but from the difficulty I experienced when I had to descend the spiral staircase after our lunch, I would say that it was few more than I should have had. ;) But from the "mystery" amuse-bouche to the fabulous finale, I thoroughly enjoyed this lunch. The food was delicious from beginning to end and the great champagnes were a very nice added bonus. So if you haven't already guessed, this meal was definitely one of the best of my trip. :thumbsup2

So that just leaves one more meal, dinner at my favorite Disney restaurant. Would it join the French Regional lunch as one of the best or will it keep company with Whispering Canyon in the cellar? What do you think? :scratchin

Next up: Dinner at California Grill

Well WCC was a flop for you but I am so glad your special meal in France was wonderful!! Free flowing champagne, sign me up :)

Oh, I hope that regional lunch is offered when we go this fall!

How much did it cost?

What an amazing lunch. Every item looks absolutely delicious. I don't eat lamb but I would totally eat that lamb. :lmao:

It sounds like a great time with the champagne and new people to talk to. :goodvibes

I really wish DH liked french cuisine. :sad2:

What awesome pictures of the Boo to You parade! And I love the picture of you and Jack and Sally. We met them at Disneylands Halloween party and they were so fun.

I'm so sorry your breakfast at WCC was not good, at least that left more tummy room for that wonderful lunch and champagne ;)

Barb, I am long-time lurker and had to finally comment on how much I look forward to your reviews. You have a real knack for DRs and making us all feel like we're there with you at the table.

Everything looks amazing at the French Regional Lunch. I'm drooling over that dessert. I'm excited to see how CG is for you this trip. I dined there for the first time this past summer and had an incredible experience. It sealed its spot on the must-do list now.

Looks like Monsieur Paul made up for breakfast! Looks yummy!

Wow, that may be one of the single greatest disney meals I've ever seen. What an amazing experience. Fingers crossed you keep the good vibes going : )

Your French Regional lunch looks amazing. I'm ready to sign up for it during the next F&W Festival. The entree and dessert look especially delicious. :goodvibes

I'm glad that you had plenty of room for it. ;) And it must have been nice to have such a friendly table.

Yes, I was pleasantly surprised by the generous pours. :thumbsup2

Although this was my first time, I believe that the French lunch has been offered for several years now so I think you should be fine. It was $135, which included gratuity but not tax. Also keep in mind that it does not include admission to Epcot. Although pricey (in comparison, the Italian lunch was $94) I thought it was worth it.

Though I was leery about French cuisine going into this lunch, by the end I was a believer. :thumbsup2

Oh, you've been to the Disneyland party. Have you also been to MNSSHP at WDW? If so, how do the two compare? :scratchin

Aww...thank you so very much. Such kind words. I hope you do get to go to the French Regional lunch sometime and that you too have a great experience. Thanks again for reading and taking the time to comment! :goodvibes

Yes, in the end I was kind of glad that breakfast was not good. It left me with more room for the delicious lunch food and champagne. ;)

It was amazing, and something I would happily do again if I have the opportunity. As for the good vibes continuing...:worried:

I feel very fortunate to have been seated with such nice, friendly people at this lunch and the two others which I did. It made being a solo guest so much more enjoyable. :thumbsup2

"A Tale of Three Meals"

This is the third and final installment of the strange tale of bi-polar dining which I experienced on the 4th day of my trip. A quick look at the score card for today's dining shows that my breakfast at Whispering Canyon Cafe was nearly a total loss. With the exception of the Mickey waffle, the breakfast skillet was for me a failure. However, things improved greatly when I attended the French Regional Lunch at Monsieur Paul. All four courses were very good and the champagnes which accompanied them were all to my liking as well. So lunch was a definite win! As for my dinner, well let's see how that went down, shall we? ;)

After a much needed nap to sleep off the effects of all the champagne, I headed to the Wilderness Lodge boat dock to catch the boat to the Contemporary. Unfortunately the line for the boat was crazy long plus there was no boat anywhere in sight. With very little time to spare before my ADR, I decided to return to the lodge and take a taxi. It was a very quick and inexpensive ride over to the Contemporary and I was able to check in a few minutes early for my dinner reservation at...

The wait was not long before I was seated at a table for two by the window. Here are some photos of the menu which I was presented, starting with the cocktails...

From this I chose my usual...

Twisted Mai Tai - Mount Gay Rum, Crème de Noyaux, Orange Juice, and Pineapple Juice with a splash of Lime

This is sweet and fruity, which is exactly how I like my cocktails. :thumbsup2

So that was the easy part of the ordering process. The hard part was choosing my food. During my December 2013 trip I had visited California Grill twice and both times I enjoyed everything that I ordered from their new post-remodel menu. Then when I returned during my April/May 2014 trip (again I went twice), I tried some new (to me) things and for the most part was not thrilled with my choices. I chalked it up though to my ordering poorly, so this time I wanted to make my choices carefully. Here is the menu from which I chose...

None of the entrees were calling my name, nor was the sushi. So that left the Flatbreads and Hot Appetizers or the Soups, Salads, and Appetizers from which to choose my dinner. Ultimately I decided to order one item from each of these sections of the menu. While I waited for my selections to be prepared and delivered, I decided to give the new focaccia bread another go...

While I had tried the whole grain sourdough rolls and lavender-infused focaccia a few times previously I had not cared for them. I didn't like the "flowery" taste of the bread and the rolls were just plain boring. I again passed on the rolls this time but the focaccia looked really good so I couldn't resist trying it. Much to my surprise, this time I actually enjoyed it. The lavender flavor seemed much more subtle and I ended up eating a whole piece before my other food arrived. And speaking of which, it arrived pretty quickly and both things at the same time even though I had asked for them to be brought separately. But I didn't think this was worth complaining about so I ended up eating them at the same time. My first selection was one of the flatbreads...

Heirloom Tomato BLT Flatbread with Marinated Tomatoes, House Bacon, Romaine Chiffonade, and Lemon Mayonnaise

And a closer look...

I had high hopes for this one because I was a big fan of a flatbread which had this same exact description that I had had here two years ago...

Unfortunately the new version was not nearly as good. First of all the romaine lettuce and the tomatoes seemed extremely wet, causing the flatbread crust to be soggy, especially in the middle. Also the tomatoes were green and yellow instead of red and tasted rather sour to me. All in all, this was a disappointment. :sad2:

My other choice was one of three salads which were listed on the current menu...

Autumn Harvest Salad with Ribston Pippin Apples, Tuscan Kale, Pumpkin Seeds, Point Reyes Blue Cheese, and Cider Vinaigrette

Ok, here was my thinking process when ordering this. During my previous visits to California Grill during the last year they had had a different kale salad on the menu. I had ordered and enjoyed this salad twice, once in December and again in April.

Heirloom Apple and Kale Salad with Cripps Pink Apples, Marcona Almonds, Cranberry, Feta, and Cider Vinaigrette

The new Kale Salad had similar ingredients so I figured ordering it would be a slam dunk.

Well, I was wrong. :guilty: While the rest of the ingredients were tasty, the main one was not. The kale was tough, as in REALLY chewy! I felt like a cow chewing its cud and I did not enjoy the feeling...at all. :(

So that was two strikes, but every batter gets three before they are out. Therefore, it was necessary for me to order dessert, right? ;)

I placed my dessert order plus requested a cup of coffee before going out to the observation desk to see the Magic Kingdom fireworks show, which that night was HalloWishes. When I returned to my table both were there awaiting me...

Warm Homemade Banana-stuffed Fritters dusted with cinnamon and served with chocolate, peanut butter, and caramel sauces.

And a closer view...

I had enjoyed these twice before during my December visits, and though they had changed the presentation a bit they still tasted the same...which was very good. So with the fireworks and dessert, at least my dinner ended on a high note. But sadly the lows have been outnumbering the highs during my last three visits to California Grill. While I can't yet say for sure that it is no longer my favorite Disney World restaurant, I am forced to put it on probation. ;)
