Just back from AKL....my report....bring on the flames!!

I was also at AKL for Hurricane Jeanne. When we checked on on friday the person at the front desk was in training - told us the wrong room number so we lugged our selves and stuff down there (no bellstaff was available to help). Low and behold, she never gave us room keys and gave us the wrong room number anyway(Dh and I both thought the other had the keys). We finally got room keys and to the right room. This is my only complaint from our stay.

I thought the room was great, liked our savannah view. Positives all around. I thought the way that they handled the hurricane was more than needed. Almost as if you could say it was the downside to getting what you pay for. I felt bad for all of the staff that had been working for 2 days straight keeping us fed, and entertained while their own homes and family may be in danger from Jeanne. DH and I went around the resort floor by floor and looked at all of the African artifacts - which we would never have had time to do if it werent for Jeanne. We were shocked that they had 2 of the 3 restaurants even open. DH and I had stocked up at Goodings Grocery store the day before as we never expected it to be "business as usual".

We did however, check out on Monday and go to the WL for the rest of our stay. I'm very glad that we tried AKL and thought they did a great job throughout the hurricane.

On the other hand, we left on monday...I can't imagine not having housekeeping until thursday (from OP)...that does not seem right and I would have requested to speak w/management.

IMHO the AKL is not WL, but I'm sure glad I got to experience it and it a great back up incase WL is ever full in capacity in the future.

Sorry you had such a bad time during your stay.

We also were at the AKL during the hurricane, but had a different experience. We checked in Sun. We were in a pool view. When we opened the door a flashlight was there and the room was made up. They didn't have the refrigator though that I also requested before got there. Monday, the parks were open. When we got back, went to front desk to ask about ref. (need for med.) didn't have so we were moved to a savannah room(free). It was the Ushanna sav. -zebra trail. We saw tons of animals. Always had fresh towels and housekeeping came everyday. Ref. came on Tuesday. Front desk was always very friendly and helpful with all my questions. Transportation was also very good.

Everyone has their own story/opinion. We were at the Pop Century during Hurricane Frances and on the Friday and Saturday before the storm which came on Sunday, housekeeping left us a bags full of towels, trash bags, toilet paper and toiletries.

When we checked into the AKL, we were greeted by a less than friendly CM, he didn't explain anything about the resort. Even though I feel like I knew everything there was to know (thanks to you guys) it would have been nice. He didn't say anything about our room. We had initially booked a parking lot view, with the hope of being upgraded to Savannah view, since they are know for upgrades. Nope, didn't happen. I asked him how much to upgrade to Savannah view, and he had to go to the back to check with someone, I guess. He comes back and told me that it would be $70 more and you will be in room 3371 just follow the ramp. Our room was a long way away from the main lobby, but when we got to our room I was so happy, I feel like we got the best room at the resort. There were tons of animals out at all times. We loved the AKL. It's such a shame that the service is so inconsistent. Disney is so lucky they have such loyal fans.::yes::

No flames here as well. We have stayed at AKL twice. The first trip was a standard view which was upgraded to a pool view. We really enjoyed this stay and this beautiful resort. We stayed there again about six month's later and quite honestly, we were not impressed at all on this trip. We had a savannah view so we were really looking forward to some great views, etc. Honestly, we saw more animals and more frequently in our pool view room. Call it bad luck, who knows. Our biggest problem was not the view, etc. but the rudeness of the CM's. I was totally taken back as to what a complete turnaround from our previous trip. I wish I could say it was just one or two CM's. Unfortunately, that's not the case. I even had one CM say to me we don't see to many "repeat" guests and I had all I could do to say "I wonder why."

I still enjoy this resort and it's beauty. I would still consider another stay there but a lot of factors would have to come into play. I would not discourage anyone at all from staying here.

I was in 2238 on the Kudu trail. I was overlooking the small savannah - can't remember the name of it. My main view was of the big evacuation pen. I did see one room with a worse view. This room overlooked the evacuation pen and had to look to the right to see the savannah. Unfortunately for them, there was a big pillar to their right! They were also next to the stairwell, so they got the added benefit of the people running up and down the stairs!

The big issue for me and the view is this: AKL upgrades a LOT of people to savannah view. That's great. But, if I PAY for the savannah view, I expect that it will be comparable to the people who got upgraded. I know that might sound harsh, but it's not fair that someone gets upgraded to a great view and I have to look at the pen. If I get a crappy lagoon view at GF or Poly, at least I know that there aren't a large number of people who got upgraded to a great lagoon view because those upgrades aren't given out as freely. I would never begrudge anyone a great view. But, this room was really awful considering I paid for savannah view and got what was probably the second worst room in the entire place.

thanks - we're going next week and I'll be sure we don't get THAT room - I'm requesting Arusha? Savannah on Zebra Trail. ON a previous post, someone posted specific room numbers that a bell hop said to request.

I, too, am paying for savannah view and agree with you. I expect to get a good view.

I hope we have a better experience there than you had. Sorry for you. :( Wish it would have been better.

We're going next week, so I'll post when we get back

Actually, all 3 savannahs are the exact same size...I think you were facing Sunset. Sunset is my favorite since the giraffes seem to "hang out" around the Sunset Lounge area for quite awhile in the evenings.

I'm very sorry your experience was not what you were hoping for. :( While the hurricane may have affected some of your stay, there is no harm in asking for a room change. I feel if you paid for your view, it should be what you expect it to be!

On a side note, fridges are not delivered to the rooms before someone checks in. Again, all requests are just requests. Even if you requested it when you made your reservation several months ago, it does not guarantee it.

Again, I'm very sorry about your stay. I hope that one day you'll try AKL out again and be much happier! :)

Well, good thing that WDW has lots of resorts to choose from. I know people who love value resorts, but I wouldn't stay in them. So, maybe it all works out.

We stayed at AKL in May 2003, paid for a standard room, were upgraded to a Deluxe Savannah room (even though we checked in at 1 in the morning). Great mousekeeping, clean room , no bugs. Maid always left extra toiletries for us. Food at Boma was wonderful and plentiful. Nice CM's everywhere.

I would certainly let Disney mgmt know about your trip. I am sure that lots of the difficulties you encountered were due to the hurricane (not that that should excuse rude behavior.) I agree that you shouldn't pay an outrageous price for a hotel like AKL and then be treated badly. I have stayed in amazing hotels all over the world, and every once in a while we seem to encounter a bad experience. Maybe it's "karma" and your next visit to WDW will be extra magical!

I hope to try this resort out one day if I can get a good code on a savannah view room. My question is one about the so called "people pen". What in the WORLD is THAT?!?!?!?!

When we stayed at AKL last August the first savannah view room we were allocated actually overlooked the hot tub! We could see the pool area to our right and if we looked to our left a small part of the savannah - we went straight back down to reception and politely asked for an actual savannah view that we had paid for. The CM tapped away on the computer and eventually moved ud to a much better view. We could see the evacuation areas (I don't think you can avoid seeing these whatever room you have) but we saw giraffes under our window everyday :)

Shame really - I was looking forward to observing the wildlife round the hot tub ;)

The "people pen" is called a Boma. In case of an emergency (like a fire), everyone goes out there. Never seen anyone in the Boma though.

I am sorry to hear of your bad experience with AKL, I have been there 5 plus times and each time other than one unmagical Cm... Have had a wonderful time.

I find it astounding that a Cm would say that they do not get many repeat guests. If you were to check the Lounge Lizard thread. Many, many people are repeat guests. Akl was voted the number one family destination in North America last summer. The hotel itself not the parks...

Hopefully next time you will have a better trip and find a resort that fits! I certainly understand how you can be dissapointed, I had a stay at the Beach club that was bad... so I understand...:p

...we enjoyed AKL and did not experience anything like you described. However we were not there during the midst of a major hurricane...let alone the 4th one within a month! Could it be that the staff was a little burnt out? Maybe supplies and staffing were low?

Did I shoot flames?

To the original poster - thanks for your post

I am an AKL lover. Our family loves the place and never have had a negative experience like you in the many times we have stayed there. We had our first stay in the first week it opened and have never been dissappointed in about 6 stays there now.

Several thoughts

1. Hurricane Jenne obviously affected and effected your stay. I hope you understand that. I just read some posts from people who stayed at the Poly with negative stays during that same time with similar experiences from CM's. I think that part of it is a Hurricane experince and not a Disney experience. Please understand this and its not a blanket excuse - BUT during that time all Floridans in this region of FLorida were on edge. It was our fouth, yes 4th, Hurricane in the state and the third Hurricane that affective those in central Florida. Its not an excuse but believe me we (all of us that live here) were very much affected by the Hurricanes in how we treated each other. I have lived here for 10 years now and have never seen people on edge so badly. So please forgive your CM's and all of us during that time.

2. On the room view. Yes, I agree. A savannah view room seems to me at least to be a hit and miss thing. If you get a good room its a delightful experience like having a room with a window to a zoo. But often, other room views have very poor views and you dont really see anything. Its why we now take the standard view and do not even desire for the Savannah view because you never know what you get.

The great thing about Disney is the great selection you have. We have stay at most of the resorts and enjoy them all. However some much more so than others. I hope you will find one that is just right for you.

No FLAMES--I would take the time to write a complaint--once lockdown is over and they have reopened the parks--dude--a stain on the bed--HELLLOOO!!

Sorry you had such a bad trip--for Frances--they had entertainment brought to the hotels. We stayed at the WL and had Mickey, Minnie, Chip, and Dale, the candy lady from Japan, and the couple that does the African Drums in EPCOT. Someone posted that AKL had entertainment at the time--so it is surprising that you had nothing.

Also--no PS were taken and all PS's were cancelled--everything was walk-in and was limited menu at the WL. However, when we visited the GF the day before Frances, we heard the resort manager speaking with some unhappy guests and he was sharing their plan. It was totally different. I think it is up to each Resort to Manage their properties and guests hurricane or not.

It is totally worthy of a complaint--not for the day or 2 that the weather hampered things--but for the days after--at the very least--maybe they will give you a voucher for any resort in the future for your trouble.

I have a friend who always complained IN WRITING about very legimate things--food poisoning, macaroni necklaces in ITALY at EPCOT (lots of people complained--evidently macaroni does not equal Italy and insulting to Italians), and other things--she got free disney tix each time. Not saying that something like that will happen--but when you have valid issues--by all means say something b/c that is the only way they can fix it in the future.

I hope you have better luck next time!

Well I was there the same time the OP was. We are one of the ones you are talking about that got that free upgrade ..... so I am sorry you got such a crappy view. We had booked a pool view, but got upgraded to a Savannah with great view.....

I also heard for 7 days the supersonic toilets AND peoples sliding glass doors opening constantly..... it got quite old I agree.
And I had to crack up at your comment about having to park so far away. It really griped me to have been sooooo tired every night and then had to walk another mile to get back into the resort. What is up with AKL blocking half the parking lot off with those yellow cement poles ??

We were prepared for the Hurricane and knew we would be stuck in the lobby during it, so I wasn't overly upset with that... sorry you had such a bad experience with the housekeeping because of it.

I have always enjoyed AKL ...... but had quite my fill of it this time around. We will definitly NOT be staying there for quite a while.

I had similar problems at AKL in regards to the fridge. The front desk told us one would be sent up right away when we checked in at midnight (this was before they were free) We go to our rooms and wait....and wait. At 1AM we call the front desk. "Oh it will be right up." So we wait...and wait. Waited up for the stupid fridge until 3am and no one showed up. It was very frustrating. If no one was available to bring it, then we would have said fine and gone to bed. UGH.

This past May we spent our 2nd stay at AKL. We had a view that sounds a lot like what you had. We asked to be moved and they were booked and told that another room would be available the following day. We called the next day and were moved without any problem. It probably didn't help that you weren't feeling well and with the hurricane. That can put a damper on anyones trip. I really think you should try AKL again under better terms and see if you feel the same way. I am not making excuses for the poor housekeeping but they probably were understaffed after the hurricane. Cast members have their own homes and families to worry about too.

I just spent 10 nights at AKL. It was my first time there. It will be my LAST time there. I will post my Trip Report on the other Board since my trip was great. I'll just post my AKL review here.

Now...the lawyer in me: This report is NOT meant to discourage people from staying at AKL. I am NOT suggesting anyone cancel and/or change any reservations they have at this resort. This is my opinion and the opinion of my best friend and her DH who stayed at the resort with us. Your experience could have been different. Your experience might be different. This is MY experience and MY opinion.

First off...my room. I booked Savannah View. I think there was one other room in the resort with a worse view. My room overlooked a big fenced in area. I found out from the guy who brought up our luggage that the pen is used to evacuate guests in the event of an emergency. Beyond the pen, I could see a small Savannah. Every now and then a truck came by to parade giraffes through. I wouldn't be so annoyed at what came to be known as my Crappy Savannah View if I didn't know that this resort has a reputation for giving lots of upgrades. I knew the chances were pretty good that someone who paid for standard view had a better savannah view than I did. But, I was happy seeing the giraffes every now and then, so I didn't complain.

My room was also right next to the stairwell. So, I got to listen to the sounds of people in big stupid shoes clunking up and down the stairs all day and all night. Since the hurricane was pending and things were in chaos, I decided not to say anything or ask to be moved. Besides, the Cast Members at the front desk weren't exactly a cheery bunch and my interaction with them over the course of the trip indicated that asking to be moved to another room wouldn't have been a good idea.

I had requested a fridge when I make my reservations back in January. It wasn't in my room, so I asked for it. I was told that I would have to be put on a waiting list. A waiting list?? I guess there has been a big run on the fridges since they became complimentary. Ya think?!? Not the point. I requested one WAAAAY back in January - before the complimentary thing.
I got one my second day there - and yes, it was free.

Then Hurricane Jeanne checked in. We got messages over the phone about the parks being closed, etc. We were able to move about the resort...well, sort of....parts of the resort were off limits because the place was leaking. We had to dodge buckets on the floor to move around (especially by Boma). There were activities for kids, but the lobby is pretty small and trying to cram all those people into it was not fun.

At some point on Saturday night, the Cast Members started paying people visits. My best friend called to tell me that they walked right into her room without knocking. They gave her a flashlight. She called to ask me if they walked into my room, too. Nope. I didn't even get the flashlight. So, I called the front desk to see if I was supposed to get one. I'd come down and get it, I told them, since I knew they were really busy. They'll send one right up, they said. About an hour later (10:30), they called me back to tell me housekeeping was coming right up. I waited up until 1am and nobody ever came with it. I finally put the Privacy sign out and went to bed.

We got a message on Sunday, the day of the storm, telling us that there would be no housekeeping service. OK...we had an extra roll of toilet paper and two towels. We were all set for the storm! They closed the food court. I have no idea why since we later found out that even the All Stars kept their food court open. They even cut the usual menu at the restaurants in half. So, for $12.00, you could get African Stew, some chicken and macaroni and cheese. We called the front desk to see about any
PS or reservations for the restaurants and they said they weren't taking any. Yet, we get down there and find out that because we didn't make PS we would have to wait until 9:50pm. So, we ate what we had in the room.

They ran movies the day of the storm. I was sick with a cold, so I just medicated and slept. At least I tried to. When I ran my hand over the bed, I could feel the metal coils poking through at my poor back and legs. This was also around the time I heard it. I've read about it on these Boards. I've heard about it being a problem at the All Stars. Since I've never stayed there, I had never heard it. Until now. The WOOOSH of the toilet. Over and over again....WOOSH! WOOSH!!! I don't know if it was just one room or the entire hotel. It became the joke of the trip between me and my friend. We called it the Supersonic Woosh and joked about being lulled to sleep by the wooshing. We could also hear the THUNK of the people opening and closing the lid. We could also hear whenever someone showered. It sounded like a rainstorm. I found that if I left the bathroom light on, the sound of the fan alleviated the rainstorm sound. There was nothing to be done about the wooshing.

The day after the storm they said there would be limited housekeeping. We saw her in the hallway and asked for some towels and toilet paper. DH had spilled some Diet Pepsi on the bed and there was a big stain on the sheets, but we could wait another day. No big deal. The next day we came back from the parks at about 3pm to find that our room hadn't been touched. Same for the next day. Again, we chased her down for towels. She promised she would do our room first the next day. So, after having no housekeeping for 4 days, we returned to the room to find the beds made. YAY! When we turned down the sheets to get in, we found the big stain. She never changed the sheets. She just made the bed.

The next day, I was talking to my friend about it and she said she had the option of changing her sheets. I asked her what she meant. She returned to her room that previous day to find clean sheets sitting on the bed. So, she could have made her bed herself if she wanted clean sheets. At least she had the option!

There were times we were able to self-park. Other times, we got back so late we would have had to park in Guam and take a cab, so we chose to valet. At least we tried. Most of the time, we ended up sitting there for 10 minutes waiting and then giving up and parking ourselves.

We were asked twice, by the same CM, how our trip was and we were all honest. She gave us a comment card with numbers and an e-mail address to express our opinions. I'm not sure I see the point. The trip is over. I won't stay there again. No damage done.

So, that's my experience. I just don't see it as a "Deluxe" resort. I don't expect to hear toilets at a Deluxe resort. I don't expect to have to wait 10-15 minutes for a valet at a Deluxe resort. I don't expect to have to chase a housekeeper down for towels and toilet paper and not have my sheets changes for 4 days at a Deluxe resort. I certainly don't expect to have to make my own bed at a Deluxe resort! It seems like they have an attitude that "well, you can see animals; what more do you want?" With the exception of that one CM, I found the rest of them to be grumpy and have the personalities of wet mops.

I know lots of people love AKL and that's great. I'll never stay there again, so more for you, right!

:D

Ok, I work in a hotel.

First thing, we can't fix what we don't know is broke. If you have a problem with your room or its location, you need to SPEAK UP. Otherwise, you have no business complaining.

Second, it was the MIDDLE OF A HURRICANE. Did you expect the staff members to be cheerful and pleasant and quick? They have more important things to deal with than just you.

If you have a complaint, tell them but they likely won't be all Disney pleasant like you would like because its possible that a hurricane would wipe the hotel (and them and the guests) off the map for good.

I don't know about you, but thats alot of pressure and they are dealing with much more than just the guests (not to mention that likely EVERYONE was complaining. Perhaps its horrible but eventually as a hotel clerk, you just get sick to death of hearing it. There is nothing we can do about the weather or how it is handled. We just work there).

It's extremely exasperating when guests don't speak up and then have the nerve to complain after the fact. Again, if we don't know you have a problem, we can't fix it.

As for your room, there are usually rooms in a hotel that are filled last. Rooms that, while mildly desirable, are only given out when you have no other choice in the matter. These rooms also usually have older furniture and the like. Sounds like you got one of them probably because they had nowhere else to put you or the person at the desk was new or just so busy, they didn't think about it.

Next time, say something if you want problems fixed. It's the only way a hotel can help.

You wouldn't order a meal, eat the whole thing, tell the waitress everything is fine, and THEN at the end say everything was horrible and actually think you'd get your money back would you? The same thing goes here.

Btw, in regards to the fridge. The hotel is NOT supposed to say "we CAN'T do blahblah for you." Clerks are told specifically not to say that. I don't know why that is. Something about presenting a bad image. It's just as annoying to us to have to deal with guests yelling at us over it as it is for the guests.

Someone tell the managers because the clerks don't have anything to do with it. We aren't trying to be cruel to you. We are doing the job we were told to do.

Put it this way, did you really expect the staff to be happy and pleasant? Their lives are in danger because they are in the direct path of a hurricane. They probably want to be with their families or long gone out of town no matter how good the pay is because frankly, their lives are more important than making other people happy. Some of them may have even had their jobs threatened if they left because likely they were shorthanded when other staff members just simply left not caring whether they lost their jobs or not (can you blame them?).

My fiance was in the path of Ivan. I told him I didnt care if he lost his job, he needed to get out of town. His life was more important than a job and jobs are a dime a dozen. The hurricane turned at the last minute and missed New Orleans though. But I will tell you that I am very glad he was in Houston at the time. I'd rather have a live fiance than a dead one.
