Just arrived 5 hours ago . . .

I just want to say thank you for your relaxing posts. So many threads here have been started by people having horrible times at Disney (or at least the posts read that way) that I was starting to get worried about our trip in March. Your daily updates reaffirm that fun and relaxing trips do still exist at Disney, despite the occasional hiccup (your MK).

And happy anniversary!

Before I write anything else about our day today, I'm going to say one thing about our dinner tonight:

Best. Meal. Ever.

More about that later. Now on to our fun-filled, food-filled day.

After the Boardwalk Bakery sweets in our room this morning, we hung out, Skyped with our baby boy in Europe, then headed over to Epcot at around 12:00ish for our Soaring FP+. It was actually better than I remembered. We also had a FP+ for Captain EO (not sure why, but we did . . .) so we did that. It was very old school but I enjoyed it. (I have a bit of an interest in Michael Jackson - he confuses me.)

So while we were on Soaring the nice older gentleman next to us told us his favorite restaurant in the World Showcase - the one with the most authentic food - was in Germany. We'd never been there on our trips with our kids - they had no interest - so we decided to give it a try. It was around 2:00 p.m. when we got there. As always at Disney, we needed to wait with a pager, but then when we got in, there were tons of tables empty.

We sat with 6 other people who were all very friendly. My husband loved the german buffet and really filled up his plate. I enjoyed it too, but my favorite part was probably the dessert. The band/entertainment was great. The bill was just about $100 with tip.

So now it was time for a well-deserved (hahaha) nap. Today was the first day of chilly weather, and it was a little sprinkly, so hanging by the pool wasn't an option.

Well, I'm not sure what we were thinking, because after the buffet in Germany, and after the very strenuous nap, it was time to go over to Shula's for dinner!!!

But remember what I said at the beginning of this post? Best. Meal. Ever.

That's what we thought about dinner at Shula's. It was remarkable.

My husband had the oysters and the rib eye, and I had the Lobster Bisque and the lamb. We also ordered some gratin potatoes and creamed spinach. The lamb was the BEST I have every tasted. So tender. So delicious. All of the portions were gigantic. My husband said the steak blew away the one he had at Le Cellier. (Which is what I had told him from the beginning.) We also split the molten lava chocolate cake - which you order at the beginning of the meal. Wow. Just wow.

All in all, this was the highlight meal of our vacation. I'm really glad we went tonight (our 2nd to last night) because I wouldn't want to be comparing everything else to it. Our waiters were so helpful and friendly. The total bill (with tip - and we had some drinks) was $255. This meal was definitely worth it. The only problem I can come up with is that you practically had to roll us out of there. Soooooo stuffed.

One thing: remember that you can't use your Magic Bands at Shula's. My husband felt a little odd reaching into his wallet and actually taking out cash to pay for our meal!

Oh man - tomorrow is our last full day here. I don't want to even think about it.

Thoroughly enjoyed reading about your trip.....happy anniversary!! I've always wanted to try Shulas and il murino so you've got me inspired! Enjoy the rest go your trip!

Ugh. Our last full day. Ugh.

The only thing on the agenda today for sure is a trip to DTD to pick up a few gifts. We've hit every park and enjoyed every attraction that we wanted to. I'm going to check my list of restaurants to see if there's one that we've missed and really want to try.

Other than that we're free to visit wherever we want . . .

Ugh. Our last full day. Ugh.

I know! The last day is always so bittersweet...but I still envy you...you're still there and I'm not!;)

Like I've always said...the ME coming to WDW is the happiest bus ride on earth and the one leaving is one of the saddest. The good new is that there's the *next* trip to start planning for!

In the car. Jersey bound. I'll be finishing my trip report from the snowy comfort of home. One week is just not long enough...

First I want to say Happy Anniversary! I just ran across your thread and read through in one sitting. Have to say I loved it, glad you had such a good trip. Have to ask though did you make dining reservations or just wing it? Because the way you said we decided to try this or that it sounded like you just winged it. And they tell make your reservations 180 days out. This is our first trip (set24-oct5)so was just curious.

So, right now it's 9:36 pm on Saturday, February 8. What comes below is what I typed into a Word document in the car as my husband was driving at about 9:30 a.m. this morning. I saved it thinking I would post it when we got home - which should have been right around midnight. Well, you know what they say about those plans you make . . .

About an hour into our drive, my husband really started to feel sick. Mostly his stomach, but also a headache. Ugh. I do very little of the driving on our long road trips - he actually prefers to do it and he's generally better at it than I am. (All those years driving around in a police car maybe?) I tend to get totally sleepy after about 2 hours. He can just go forever. But these were desperate times, so I took the wheel for a good 5 hours of driving time (with some wake-up breaks in between.) At around 7ish he said he felt ok enough to at least drive for a while, and then around 9 we decided to stop for the night (we're in a lovely, Holiday Inn Express in Petersburg, VA.) We'll have about 5 more hours tomorrow, and hopefully he'll feel better. He's already sound asleep.

So, here's the last day of our vacation for anyone interested:

OK – I’m typing this in the car as my husband drives. I’ll post it when I get a connection at some point. Where did I end with my last report? Ah yes, our last full day. How sad.

On Friday (did I mention I was sad because it was our last full day?) we headed over to DTD at around 10:30 a.m. – mostly to shop for gifts for some peeps at home. We had lunch at the Earl of Sandwich at around 11:30 a.m. It was already pretty crowded, but we got our food and sat outside. It was overcast and a little cool, but nice to be out there. My husband got the Capresse (Mozzarella and tomato) and I got the Holiday (turkey, stuffing and cranberry sauce.) We shared an order of bacon mac & cheese. I thought my sandwich was out of this world. My husband also liked his and he really loved the bacon mac & cheese. The lunch cost $23.

We drove over to the Magic Kingdom since that was the only park we had only one visit to. Of course we couldn’t take the monorail because it’s not running most of the day right now, so we hopped on the ferry. I’m happy to say that the MK and I have kissed and made up from our little falling out the other night.

When we arrived we took the train from Main Street over to Frontierland. We had a FP+ for Thunder Mt. Railroad, which as always was a blast. We walked over to the Hall of President, which I always enjoy and would feel very unpatriotic if I didn’t visit. My husband wanted to take a ride on the River Boat, which we did. I was a little chilly, but it was fine. We also had a FP+ for Space Mt. so we did that next. It was around 3:30 by then and we would have hung out longer (for our 4:00 pm FP+ to the Haunted Mansion) but I wanted to get back to the hotel to Skype with my son again from Europe. (He’s in the middle of graduate school admissions, and he wanted to chat about some decisions.)

We hung out (and yes, I napped) until around 7:30 and then we headed out for dinner. We wanted to eat at the Big River Grille, but of course they said the wait would be an hour. I have to say (AGAIN) as we walked by the windows, there were plenty of empty tables. Down the block at ESPN (which we headed towards) there was a line of people out the door waiting, and you guessed it, tons of empty tables inside. I don’t get it. If I have to pick one thing I truly don’t understand about WDW (and don’t particularly like) is why there always seem to be empty tables, yet they can’t seat you when you walk-up to a Disney restaurant. I thought the whole cancellation fee for ADR’s was supposed to remedy no shows or whatever. Oh well – we walked over to the World Showcase to see what we could find.

Our first choice was Via Napoli, where we’d had that wonderful pizza a few nights before. Of course, they had no availability. How shocking. No problem, we tried next door at the other Italian restaurant, Tutto Gusto. They were able to seat us in what appears to be the lounge – not their main dining room. The food was delicious. My husband had the polenta with braised short ribs (which he said blew away the short ribs we had in France) and I had the shrimp risotto. Yummy. We shared a piece of Tiramisu, which was probably the best dessert of the week. The bill was $158. (Of course we had a couple of drinks . . .)

It was time for our last walk back to the Boardwalk Inn.

Our last day at WDW was wonderful. I’m so glad we went back to the Magic Kingdom. It was a great afternoon there.

We hit the road at 9:00 a.m. for the trip back to NJ. We toyed with the idea of hanging out for a few hours, but the weather wasn't very nice, so we decided to get an early start. Of course, it’s been raining the entire way.

One interesting note about our bill – which I received via email this morning. Glad I really checked it then and there. There was an extra charge from LeCellier on it, for $264!!! It was right after our correct charge. I called down to the desk and she checked and told me that was for a party of 8!! I’m thinking it must have been for a party of 8 that was on the dining plan and this charge just covered drinks and extras since it comes out to only about $30 per person. Pretty sure it would be impossible to actually eat a meal there for that little, right? So it was no problem and she immediately credited our bill and emailed me a new copy. I guess the lesson is to be sure to always check your itemized bill carefully!! I always do.

General "positives" and "minuses" of this vacation?

PLUSES +
The Boardwalk Inn - loved it
The weather was spectacular (even the last 2 days which were slightly rainy - nothing too bad)
The Magic Bands really worked well - I found them convenient
The relatively low crowds - although I think the indicators I checked did underestimate them
We didn't wait more than 10 minutes for any ride. (I hesitate to give that to the FP+ system. I think that FP- worked just as well and generally speaking, I'd put the entire FP+ system under the minuses for me personally.)
Shula's was freaking unbelievable
The pizza at Via Napoli was delicious
I really liked the breakfast buffet at Trail's End

MINUSES -
FP+ (One of my early posts in this thread pretty much said what I don't like about it. It just stressed me to make choices so far in advance, and then have to worry about either struggling to keep the plans or worrying about changing them.)
The Boardwalk Bakery - wasn't too fond of their food in general
Breakfast as a whole at WDW - I felt like we had to put in too much of an effort to find a really good one
Some of the old standby rides at the MK could use a little TLC
I still don't think the ADR system works that well - too many times we'd arrive at a restaurant without a reservation and we were told either there was no availability at all, or we would have to wait. Yet, there almost always were empty tables.

So, as I said earlier, I’m actually typing this in a word document as we drive home. I’ll post as soon as I have internet – that might not be until we get home. If anyone has any questions about anything, just let me know.

I loved this trip. It was truly wonderful.

Just read your post. I didn't make one dining reservation before we left home. I'm not crazy about the whole ADR thingy - I love to plan, but not down to where I'm going to eat that far in advance! (Goes along with my issues with FP+ and planning in advance down to the littlest detail!) I was also positive that I'd accidentally forget about a reservation and then be charged for not canceling!!

We played everything by ear, and ended up booking 2 or 3 dinners the day before (using either my iPhone or computer.) It was really easy to do. I'm definitely NOT an expert, but the time of year that you are going shouldn't be a problem. The only inconvenient meal we had to deal with was Le Cellier at 4:05 pm for dinner. That was definitely a bit earlier than I would have liked! But I understand that's one of the hardest reservations to get at WDW. So generally speaking, we definitely just winged it as far as our meals. And as you can tell, we ate at some popular places. Hope this helps.

THANK YOU again for your review of the Boardwalk and of my room specific questions - Im still hoping to book soon and I just KNOW that your answers/comments will be a huge help!!

and it sounds like you had a FABULOUS time and ate at some wonderful places!!

Great report! And a big thank you for doing it in such a timely matter. Sorry to be this way but don't understand why people do a report and take sometimes months to complete it!! Thank you!

I appreciate the effort many go to share their trips and tips but you really went above and beyond by reporting back and answering questions during your vacation!

I agree...it was great. Thank you Susie for your time and effort. It gave us all a bit of WDW while we were sitting at home.

Hahaha - I'm starting to think that this might be part of the reason my husband and I have managed to stay married for 25 years!! He's a guy who really (and I mean REALLY) knows how to relax on vacation. He can sleep anywhere anytime I give him the opportunity. Me, on the other hand? I need to keep myself busy (although I do like a little nappy each afternoon.) But honestly, if I wasn't typing away about the stuff we were doing at WDW, I might have been taking that time to look at work e-mails. Yikes!! That's a definite no-no!!!

I'm glad you guys appreciate it. That makes me happy!!

That's awesome...look forward to your next Disney trip report!

Hopefully I get a WDW vacation before that happens.pixiedust:

The last day sounded good.

Too bad he got sick on the ride home.

Nice pluses and minuses. The food I feel has gone downhill there.

Thanks for your trip report!! Glad you got home before the snow storm hit the East Coast!!!!!!
