Just a rant...Why can't I get a job??

I just don't understand it. I have a full time job right now and have held this job for almost 7 years BUT i can't seem to get a part time job in the evenings.

Thanks for venting. If you all have any hints on landing a part time job..please let me know!!

Check into security guard work. I started there in the early 80's before they relized how reliable good workers women are (typical male job then) . They have family's to care for and not just want to sit at a guard desk and sleep. This was before I could attain a police position which was my life work predisability. Now I am a P.I.

My dh retired and works security now as does my son. Some of the younger guys they hire have recently been fired for lack of availabilty (not showing up/relieving the other guard)_ they were caught stealing, arrested unrelated to the job, sleeping on the job etc.

If you look on Craigs list or newspaper for guard positions that may work. The only problem may be starting the shift at 3- 4pm and you are still at work. BUT that also may be that you are the weekend guard for the one that works during the week.

Women with families to care for are the most reliable workers. There may be a family emergency, but all workers have that risk.
good luck

All I can tell you is you're not alone... and I'm looking for a regular FT job somewhere that will give me any sort of chance at promotion. I have a current job, but there's no real room for growth out of the entry-level position in it. And I have a 4 year degree.. it honestly seems to hinder more than help lately. Good luck and I hope you find something soon as well as all the others out there hunting!

Me three. I have a bachelor's degree from one of the top schools in the country, a master's, and a career history of working for Fortune 500 companies. I've had interviews, but have been out of work for a year, unless you count the VERY part-time community college professorship I got, but it's impossible to live on.

Things seem to be picking up as of last week, though, so I remain hopeful that my situation will change soon!

Try call centers: Collection agencies, insurance companies, etc. There are many call centers that are 24/7 and are looking for people specifically for evening/nights.

Also try office cleaning jobs, airport jobs, hotel jobs.

These jobs may not pay much --- maybe $10-$12 per hour -- but it's something!

It makes me so sad to read posts like this. Hopefully things will get better for everyone! I have a part-time job at the Gap, and we are always looking for good people! My store likes the SAHM, because the majority of us are responsible and will show up to work or try to find someone to cover our shift if we have to call out.

You won't believe how many people will get hired and then figure out after 2 shifts that they don't like it and they never call or show up again! It makes me so mad, because there are people that would be really grateful to have a job!

ETA: Another place to look is if you live by an airport there are always companies that hire people to work for the airlines. The major airlines hire their own workers, but a lot of airlines like Air France, Scandinavian Airlines, or International ones use outside companies that are always looking to for customer service reps.

Good advice to double check your resume grammer
look at spelling
look at your email address,I will not contact anyone who has a "foxylady@.." or similar . It's a great idea to have a seperate email for professional contacts.
Same standards for the message/greeting on your phone. When you are looking, present yourself well at every opportunity
tell everyone you know, and those you meet, that you are looking for a new challenge and are available for work
when possible, if you can fill out an application in the store, ask if you can introduce yourself to the hiring manager when you turn in the app
try to provide full availability when possible, and when your hired, honor the availability you agreed to on the app
dress the part, don't come in with anyone else,or wearing shorts and flip flops, show me your willingness to try to stand out
if you do get an interview, send a thank you note, you will stand out as showing courtesy , respect, and follow through
I've been a district manager in retail for 20 years and have interviewed thousands of candidates....good luck! You can do it!

I can work 4pm-until midnight or later but no one wants to hire me!! I would like to have some extra money to pay for our Disney trip and my step-son's senior year in high school.

I don't aim high for jobs. I've applied at Target, McD's, 7-11, Walmart and no one wants me!

I guess the thing that really makes me mad is that I have a few kin people that job hop..they only last a job for month or two and they go find a job elsewhere AND they get the job. Grrr.

That is hard. I had the same issue, except I have it slightly worst, I work full time SHIFT work, which made me available really odd hours-on different week rotations. Have you applied retail? I have found, I've never had any issues applying for, and getting retail positions who were more than willing to work around that weird schedule of mine.

I had that same problem. No retail would hire me. I have a full time job but needed the extra income as DH is disabled. I am working in a Gym on the weekends - not my ideal job though. I work 7 days a week now. I handle the desk and am the only one there. I work 12-7 on Saturdays and 7-12 on Sundays. I don't mind the Sundays so much but today was horrible. I couldn't please anyone in regards to music tastes. I should have just turned it off. Yesterday was dead. I would rather work during the week at night then the long Saturday.

Rather than looking for a retail job, maybe you would be better off doing odd jobs in the mean time, such as babysitting on the weekend or in the evening, cleaning houses, erranding for the elderly, weeding flower beds.

Another job that is available that people are needed for is shoveling dog poop. Let me tell ya I have seen some nasty yards. I bet it pays well and probably cash jobs.

I cleaned houses for 20 years, and it's not an "odd job". people want you there while they 're at work, not in the evening while they're relaxing. and believe me, when people are broke, having your house cleaned is the first thing to go.

Or delivering pizzas...
or waitressign or bartending. thing is with these jobs (I do both) there are few openings because there are so many less customers in this economy . and believe me, tips are down, too. plus, there are so many looking, that of course they want people with experience. you may not need a college degree to wiatress or tend bar, but there are certain skills.

now that's an idea!!! also caring for pets while otheres are away (feeding, walking dogs, etc.

Op, I feel your pain, time was, you could always pick up a little extra $ doing many of these things. nowadays, all those folks out of work, wholse unemployment has run out, are taking those jobs as a first income!! teenagers are having a heck of time finding jobs, cause moms and dads are taking those jobs to pay the mortgage.

Kohl's is doing their seasonal hiring now. They are very flexible with hours. I worked a fulltime job and was only available from 5:00 to closing. But as we get closer to Christmas closing is often midnight, and they will expect you to stay.

good point. an employer doesn't care that they are your second job. they expect 100%, no matter what you are doing when you are not there.

I once had a job in Activities at a nursing home. I also tended bar a couple nights a week. when my boss at the nursing home overheard that I had a 2nd job, she said "I don't want to know about it, I didn't hear that" apparently, it was against policy.
