Hi out there !
I have seen endless threads now on the many delicious xmas cookies out there.... and since I am definitely not the baker... I wanted a simple recipe for yummy foolproof sugar cookies !!

Can anyone help ... TIA !!

I have never, ever found a recipe for easy "foolproof" sugar cookies...and I am one who bakes quite a bit (especially around the holidays).

When I want sugar cookies, I either buy the Pillsbury slice and bakes or I "compromise" and make butter cookies (Spritzes).

Good luck!

Here are the ones I use.

One is for cut-outs....the other (a much used family favorite) is for drop.

You can buy it in the spice section in any grocery store.

First I think the phrase "plain simple sugar cookie recipe" is an oxymoron! :lmao: This is probably my least favorite kind of cookie to make - just because of the extra time involved: rolling out, cutting out, decorating... ;)

First, Cream of Tartar is found here in the spice aisle. It's found in Snickerdoodle recipes, which is the only reason I even have it in my house. ;) Neither of my recipes call for it, but I wouldn't leave it out of a recipe which does call for it.

This is my grandmother's recipe. I'm sorry, but she was never big on giving "full" instructions. ;) She was a good old PA Dutch baker who often didn't even write down how much flour to add to recipes....just "until it looks right." :lmao: :lmao: I don't know how long I do them - I usually just start checking after 10 minutes. And "4x sugar" means confectioner's sugar.

Sugar Cookies

2 c butter
2 c sugar
4 eggs
6 Tbl milk
2 tsp vanilla
6 c flour
4 tsp baking powder

Chill the house. Roll out thin. (Use a combo of 4x sugar & flour to keep from sticking to rolling pin.) Bake at 350.

This recipe is from a friend. It's very similar, but makes fewer cookies. However, it does include full instructions. ;)

Sugar Cookies

1 1/3 c shortening
1½ c sugar
2 tsp vanilla
2 eggs
8 tsp milk (2 Tbl + 2 tsp)
4 c flour
3 tsp baking powder
½ tsp salt (optional)

Cream shortening, sugar & vanilla. Add eggs & milk. Beat until fluffy. Blend in dry ingredients. Divide in half & chill 1 hour. Roll out & cut. Bake 8 – 10 min at 375. Yield: 5 – 6 dozen

If it is listed in a recipe, it is usually important. It has an acidic quality that has a specific purpose.
And as mentioned, easy to find ;)
Happy baking!!

I go to Gordon Food Service, get the box of 6 dozen (I think) pre cut out sugar cookie dough for $10 and I'm good to go.

The dough is already made and cut into Christmas shapes, all you have to do is bake and decorate! :thumbsup2 Can't get any easier than that.

They are good cookies too!!

I'm not a baker...I like to cook, but I hate to bake..

I have to make sugar cookies for school next week, and bought the premade sugar cookie sheets (I think they are made by Pillsbury). They are really pretty good!

I don't like to bake, but my kids like to decorate Christmas cookies. I buy Pillsbury dough.

Back when I tried to be Super Mom and did everything from scratch (what was I thinking?!), I used this recipe

http://www.crisco.com/scripts/display_recipe.asp?recipe_nbr=40198

for sugar cookies. They turned out OK.

But now that I'm older and wiser, I appreciate the minimal time and clean-up that the Pillsbury dough offers compared to making my own dough. : )

I'm a chocolate chip cookie queen but these sugar cookies made me convert last year!! I got them off of the Food Network by Sandra Lee, semi homemade, EASY and delicious!!

SANDRA LEE'S CREAM CHEESE SUGAR COOKIES

1 box sugar cookie mix
1/2 stick butter, melted
1 egg
1/3 cup softened cream cheese
1/2 cup all-purpose flour, plus additional for surface

Preheat oven to 325 degrees F.

In a bowl, combine sugar cookie mix, melted butter, egg, cream cheese, and flour; mix together to form dough. On a floured work surface, shape each dough into balls. Bake on the top shelf of the oven for about 10 to 12 minutes. Transfer to a rack to cool before serving.

I like this recipe from allrecipes.com http://allrecipes.com/recipe/soft-sugar-cookies-iv/detail.aspx The trick is to take them out of the oven BEFORE you think they are really done. If you dont let them brown, they will stay soft. If they brown at all they will be crunchy. I like to add a little orange zest and a little fresh orange juice to the recipe just for a little flavor.

That's a trick I use with all of my cookies. I remember hearing years ago that cookies continue to cook after they've been removed from an oven so always take them out before they're completely done. I love soft cookies so I always do that! :thumbsup2

That sounds easy. Are they soft or hard? Mine never come out right. :confused3

Pilsbury slice and bake.....I think they are so much better than homemade ones. My mom likes her recipe better  , but not me...I'll stick with the Dough Boy!! :thumbsup2

In my experience, the Betty Crocker mix rolls better than the Pillsbury slice and bake (if you're rolling instead of just slicing), and it's not much more work.

They are soft, but you can let them bake longer and they will get harder.

I personally don't like the taste of the slice and bake type cookies so I prefer this one. It's close enough to the real thing that they can fool people!
