I've posted in the past about my familys lack of DVC understanding. The latest criss-crossed conversation; on some future trip some friends and I want to do a non-Disney trip to FL and check out all the rest of Orlando...

One sister insists that I cannot stay on Disney property and not visit the parks because Disney Operations won't allow it.:headache: I mean she vehemently insists that using DVC obligates me to buy and use park tickets.... I could see if the feeling was "hey you'll never be able to resist going to a park when you're that close" heck I rather agree with the sentiment:goodvibes Nope, absolutely positively we must use the Disney Parks when staying on DVC points, it's not allowed to stay there otherwise... I just eventually shut up, I wasn't going to get thru :sad2:

Was relaying the conversation to some friends expecting some sympathy... um well most of them didn't get the concept either:rolleyes1.... <cough> and I made it worse when I pointed out if we really wanted too, we could stay at DVC, and book a dining plan and hit several of the hotel restaurants for late dinners if we really wanted too (can't say I do but it is an option) - again not required to buy park tickets to do this

I'm pretty sure no one noticed me leaving during the loud argument that was going on -- and can I add I'm the only one who owns DVC or a timeshare in my group?:teacher:

<gack> maybe I'll charge for DVC stays based on how much arguments I get beforehand...... I haven't asked for money yet but it's tempting~

What's the worst misunderstanding you've had with non DVCers?

I was helping a friend plan her trip today. We were talking about our upcoming trip in December. Even though I had done my best to explain how points worked she asked me if I am going to be penalized since I am only staying for 5 days. Eek!

yep - had that same conversation with a different sister.... she at least was basing it on her own timeshare experiences and was trying to make sure I didn't have to pay more out of pocket for something....

This misunderstanding actually came from quite a few people when we came back from our trip and told our friends that we bought into DVC. They said "holy cow, isn't DVC that like $100,000 or something??" Ummmm...what?? :scared1: We, like our friends, are solidly middle class, so that comment (which we heard from more than one set of our friends, by the way) just floored DH and I. :rolleyes1

To the OP, I've oftentimes found that people who are *convinced* they know more than you about a particular subject, often end up just sounding stupid. You did right by not engaging with them. :thumbsup2

So far the best was my mother asking me how much rack rate was for the THV we're staying in next year. I told her aprx. $700/night+tax, but that we were staying on points, so not paying cash.

The next week after I made the reservation and told her we were booked, she looked at me like I had two heads and said isn't that awfully expensive? And I said no, we're staying on points. She thought we had to use points plus pay rack rates :lmao: I finally straightened her out that the whole reason you get points is so you don't have to pay a room bill.

Even better, I book reservations and eat in the hotels without even staying onsite or visiting a park that week.

And sometimes I make the ADRs just hours before showing up to eat.

Ahhh... the fun of living just 30 minutes away.

who said I invited them?

okay this trip yes.... but there has been conversations where I wonder where people are planning on staying.... I sure haven't volunteered my DVC for all the trips they talk about;)

I know what you mean. I have a neighbor who is a nice person, but an extremely overprotective mother. In a nutshell, she drives me insane and I can barely be around her for an afternoon, let alone a week! :scared1: She keeps asking when we are going to Disney together. I just keep planning my trips....:thumbsup2

I have found a cure that works for me. If I feel the urge to explan DVC to someone I walk out my back door find a large tree and start slaming my head into it. Its a lot easier and less painful. They don't get it and you can't make them.

Isn't that the truth.:rotfl2:

Last year I brought my DS and her family - I was smart - I put them in their own 2 BR at OKW and HHI. LOL

When she was checking into HH the gentleman besider her was paying cash - $3400 or so. My sister asked me how long he was staying for for that price - I told her probably a week. She didn't believe me - she insisted that at that price it must be at least 3 weeks. Can you tell she never vacations??

QFT!:rotfl: Hmm we do have the only mature tree in the neighborhood- maybe that's a sign? :rotfl2:

<cough> neither of my sisters would have hesitated to ask the man directly just how long he was staying:rolleyes1 I think you're lucky she kept the discussion between you two~ I have to admit I probably would have found the rate rates listed somewhere to show them... just to get the facts straight of course!:thumbsup2

I just don't bother anymore!

I got so tired of the one sided conversations, the scarcasim, the funny comments, the "rolled eyes" whenever I would talk about WDW that I don't bother talking about it anymore. Unless...the person asks a specific question, OR I know the person/persons are part of the WDW family. :thumbsup2

I just don't understand why people have blinders on when it comes to WDW and DVC???? They just can't seem to grasp the fact that you can do whatever you want to do.

When I tell "some" people that DH and I are going to spend 6-8 weeks a year at WDW when we retire, they look at me as if I had three heads!! Yes; DH and I bought enough points for the future, that would allow us 6-8 weeks between SSR and BW during the cold NY months in a few years. Now if I said "DH and I bought a condo in Florida and will be spending 6-8 weeks there in the winter", do you think I'd get the same looks????? :lmao:

So no, some people really don't get it.

We're going with friends this Oct, one couple who do get Disney (and go frequently) and two single men. We as a group started saving up back in 2007 $10/$20 a month. I send out monthly updates on the fund and happenings at Disney.

Since Space Mountain rehab has been announced, I have repeatedly said we most likely will not get to do Space Mtn unless there is a soft opening or test - we did catch Pirates that way in 2006, the very last day it was open was the first day of our vacation....

Last week one of the single men pulled out pictures of a company visit to DisneyWorld - had to be back in the 90s and showed us a pic of a notice Space Mtn was closed and said "The only thing I ask for from this vacation is I don't see this message again"....:headache::mad::sad2::scared:

Thankfully everyone else in the group jumped on him about not listening or reading and the rest of the men told him he will be quizzed on my emails going forward - he'll be expect to buy rounds if he can't answer:laughing:

But overall for this next trip - not too bad, the other lady and myself pretty much decide what the main plan is, have laid it out for the rest and said "feel free to join us or have fun going your own way...)

I guess I have less confontational friends and relatives. :rolleyes1 I have explained it to my parents, both of my brothers and 8 of my best friends. I put the numbers on paper if they didn't understand and I saw the 'lightbulb' go on in each of their heads.:thumbsup2 They all get it now and have been more than happy to join me on vacations to Disney. Once they walk into the villa, they are in awe and very happy that they have a 'rich' friend.. I quickly set them straight but explain to them that since I work 2 jobs, my vacations are a HIGH priority to me. I spent one week at a Value and that sold me on DVC. Bought my home at SSR that same year:cheer2:

That's my sister, she has no clue how much rooms cost anywhere.

It's only a good deal for her if someone else pays for it(ie me), so you can tell she doesn't go anywhere.

When we bought in about 3 yrs ago, my youngest was in preschool. DH was picking him up one day wearing his DVC cap. A couple of mothers said. "Oh we're DVC also." DH asks what's your home resort? Mothers get a totally clueless look, as they though DVC was another name for the Disney Visa card.

I had a "discussion" last week with my son's baseball coach's wife, who has a timeshare near WDW. She asked me what week I had, and I told her that DVC doesn't work that way, it works on points.

She went on a 20 minute rant about how the point system is horrible. Apparantly for their timshare new buyers are getting points, and old buyers have weeks. Gosh that would be confusing. She insisted that DVC was the same way, but to my knowledge, it has always ben a point system.

I also had a DVC discussion with my mother in law, who got invited by my kids to our next WDW trip. I sent her the links to the DVC web site for Animal Kingdom and Old Key West resorts, and asked her if she had any peference for one or the other. She told me the next day that these CAN'T be the rooms we're getting, they're just too expensive. They just show these pictures to entice people to join the timeshare. It's a scam, like all other timeshares.

I'll be looking for that tree to bang my head on.

Something to think about when you get in a DVC explanation trap. This comes from one of the greatest thinkers of our time. Ron White(you can't fix stupid.) Think of this and a big smile will come on your face.
