Just spoke to the most annoying CM. She literally chastised me for using "AP" instead of saying "annual pass" and said "people on message boards think they know some insider stuff because they use acronyms, but Disney doesnt use any acronyms and we have no idea what you guys are talking about when you do that - you can just speak the real words when you talk to us, then we will know you know what you are talking about."

WOW. Somebody has apparently had a bad day.

It probly is annoying for cm's though I am sorry it was a chastisement. I always hope I get a wonderful cm when I call for anything because it makes my day and sometimes several days.

I hate acronyms and would never dream of using them outside of a message board. I find them obnoxious. I see through your story, that I am not alone....

First, I am shocked that a CM would be so rude! Like it is her job to do that or just asked what you mean and be nice?

I do find myself using some acronyms. Like ADRs. It just is so much easier to say that. But outside of this board, ADR means nothing.

But I say, who cares. I like being a member of an exclusive group with our own secret language. ;)

I too don't use acronyms in daily conversation. In fact, I don't even say "the Magic Kingdom"; I say "Magic Kingdom Park" because that's its official name. In conversation, I probably sound like a marketer because I call everything by its full and official name.

That being said, I don't have any problem with people using them in conversation and that CM was just being rude. Regardless of if he/she had a bad day, there's no reason to antagonize a potential customer (who's looking to purchase an annual pass of all things!) like that. There's no way to justify what the CM said, but I think you'll find many, many more kind CMs at WDW/DLR/DCL than the occasional one in a bad mood.

Yes, perhaps there is some sort of DIS prison where we should send the OP? :confused3

Lol, acronyms exist for a reason. YMCA, NCAA, aaa, ASPCA, NRA, apa, mla, AARP.... Why write or say any of those any other way. :) op, ignore irritating people.

Frankly, if I worked for a company like wdw, I'd be learning the terms used by the company and the consumers. It isn't brain surgery. Pure laziness not to.

Yep. In my line of work if we didn't use acronyms in conversations it would take us too long to talk. But new employees do have to be issued a cheat sheet. Lol

I'm one of the people who dislike acronyms. When I first came here, I couldn't understand a thing What DD ment, I had no idea.

I have started using them here, because it seems that if you don't, you a weird. Usualy, even on forums and facebook, I don't use acronyms.

I've heard people say "LOL" in real life. I'm not even sure they know what it actualy means anymore (note that I'm french, and LOL is an english acronym).

She might have sounded rude, but maybe, talking to her with acronyms was rude for her too.

Well, with that theory it should be acceptable to order a BM in McDonald's :rotfl2:

If Disney wanted their resort to be called WDW; or their parks MK, DHS, etc.; or their tickets APs, PHs, et al; or their resorts CR, POFQ, AoA...; that's what the names would be - at the very least in literature or the website.

Simply because we're too caught up in ourselves or too busy or too lazy to type out or say the entire name of something doesn't mean a company or its employees should follow suit.

If you don't want to use them, don't use them. It's perfectly fine to spell it all out if you want to; you know there won't be any confusion at all that way. It's just...for some of us, it gets old to write things out over and over and over and over.

If you aren't at that point, don't use them.

That's really annoying. It's MY AP and I can call it what I want. If she doesn't understand what "AP" means that's fine, but it's not her job to tell me what I can and cannot call my pass. I think I'll name my next AP "Fred" and call it that. "Do you have a Fred discount?"

OK now I'm just being silly. But still. I paid the money, I can call it what I want. If I'm misunderstood I'll rephrase, but don't chastise me.

remember also that message boards that pertain to the way someone is doing their job or about a specific industry is a thorn in the side of said employees.

I'm an auto mechanic at a dealer and we all know there are a lot of automotive message boards, most of which bash on us, then the frequents of the message boards come to us and tell us how to do our job based on what they read on the internet.

I believe this probably applied to this employee, there are certain things that tip us off that a customer (guest) is a forum member and when we notice those, then we tend to tense up a little bit and go on the defense. Forum members tend to have a know-it-all tone (not all of them, I'm just generalizing), it's grating after the umteenth one asks the same question (or uses the same acronym in this case). It had nothing to do with you OP, just one of those industry things, probably won't ever change, you just had the unfortunate timing to witness an insider moment.

Just let it roll off your back, we all have bad days (even cast members).

OP, Don't worry, you're not the only one who uses acronyms outside of the message boards. Sometimes I find myself saying them out of habit. Mainly to DH, but he has them figured out by now. I can understand the CM not knowing what AP meant, but she definitely didn't need to be rude about it! :scared:

When I read the acronym AP, I say "Annual Pass" in my head. So, I wouldn't have thought to use the term "AP." I guess I do that with all acronyms on message boards. That said, I don't see myself being frustrated if someone else used the term.

We use acronyms all the time where we work because people would be more likely to not know what we were talking about if we didn't use the acronym.

but it's not her job to tell me what I can and cannot call my pass. I think I'll name my next AP "Fred" and call it that. .

:lmao::rotfl2:

I think a polite CM (oops, should I say cast member) would have said, nicely, "do you mean Annual pass?" just to make sure there is no miscommunication.

Ha! Love your answer. Call a spade a spade .....

And you're right. Acronyms are fine here but they have no use outside of the DISboards.

However, the CM the OP, or should I say, the Cast Member the Opening Poster spoke to could have been a bit nicer about it.
