Thank you Doris for answering my question.

I have to disagree (are you surprised

) that if we express our opinion that the Gosselin kids should be off reality tv then we're perpetuating the show. I don't believe for a moment that we're the reason the show is so successful. Some of us here refuse to even watch it. Just because there is discussion doesn't mean it's the reason for the shows success. I don't buy the tabloid magazines and am not planning to watch. How am I contributing to Kate's success then? All I'm doing is discussing it here with all of you fine ladies.
Exactly. I hardly think that following the story, discussing and posting about it is perpetuating the filming of the kids. The fans that watch the new Kate + 8 show, buy the tabloids, merchandise, DVDs and books featuring the kids will do that. A few clicks here and there by me are not going to make much difference. Incidentally, I only post here, and only every few days do I have a burst of Gosselin/Reality TV kids activity. I guess some sites have people posting pro or con around the clock, multiple times a day. Who has the time?
As to the filming of the kids -- that horse left the stable long ago with TLC and J & Kate holding the reins. I can't control whether or not parents chose to make their children work on or off TV. Child labor is legal, within limits, even though I personally disapprove of it. I can, however, talk about filming that is IMO skirting or breaking existing child labors laws, and support the strengthening of those laws. I believe that the Gosselin situation is merely the tip of the iceberg, and other children may need protecting from big business and naive, if not greedy, irresponsible parents too. Balloon Boy comes to mind.
I also want to reiterate: I'm actually all for Kate succeeding in her chosen TV career independently. It is her choice to pursue a career that apparently requires her to leave her children with nannies, but she is not the only person to do so. Success on her own might make them rethink the excessive, again IMO, filming of the children. I saw no reason to boycott DWTS while she was/is on because it is a show I have watched on and off for several years. I'm glad I watched because Kate trying to dance was comedy gold. Similarly, if I watched ET, the View, or wherever other show she pops up on next, regularly I would not change the channel just because Kate were on.
However, I will not be watching Kate + 8 because I think the kids are working too hard, although at least they now have work permits and there is some oversight, and I will not be watching Twist of Kate, because I'm not sure this particular woman has much to offer, or to teach me.
I agree that it won't happen any time soon, but it could. Jon & Kate could put a stop to it, they could have put a stop to it a long time ago.
But for Kate to put a stop to it, then that would mean (IMO) that she is willing to give up her (tabloid cover) celebrity status. As we've seen over the last several months, with the exception of the ratings on DWTS, everything that Kate has tried without the children, hasn't been very successful. I predict Kate + 8 will have higher ratings than the other show she's starring in for TLC.
I haven't been keeping up with the ratings for her other enterprises, but on DWTS, Pamela Anderson and Kate G were supposed to the big draws for the show. The ratings went down +/-11% when Kate was sent home, apparently less than anticipated. The ratings dropped steeply again when Pamela left and have dropped since with every departure. This is consistent with all previous seasons, IIRC, and the ratings will rise again for the finals. That is because fans of all the contestants, not just Kate's, will tune in again. I hope this is the right link:

I think she can keep up her tabloid image quite nicely without the kids now. DWTS got her a lot of publicity, if not a lot more fans. Kate seen "dating," Kate on the Bachelorette, Kate's new hairdo, Kate has meltdown in location of your choice. . . The sky is the limit for Kate!
