JcPenney Revises their Revised No Sales Except When We Have Sales Plan!

Penneys was so out of touch with who really shopped in their stores when they made changes...and now that they are backpeddling, those shoppers have found other places to shop. I am one of them...I will not return. :goodvibes

The last time I shopped there was November. I had not shopped there since the "change" previous to that, my kids were getting Xmas phos done though and so I figured I would pick up Xmas sweaters on the way back to the studio. No big deal except they had no sweaters at all.

Poor purchasing choices on the part of their buyers. The sales people helped me find button down shirts but they are red gingham. They thought I should have them wear thermal henleys. Target had what I needed for the actual holiday get togethers, sweaters for the boys.

They are currently overpriced on everything from Nike to Carter's.

I do agree with the brand name prices. Don't get me started on Levis and Dockers!

I've become a BonTon shopper in place of Penneys. But I do still like some of the lines Penneys carries. Also, I really like our local Penneys photo dept. I've always gotten great pics taken there.

It may 'look' nicer, but it has to be killing their bottom line even more.

In retail, its all about revenue per square foot of floor space. The more merchandise, the more revenue per square foot. With their holiday sales down over 25% from the previous year, their 'uncluttered' look had to cost them a FORTUNE in lost revenue.

I honestly don't know that they can recover from their switch to "fair and square". They've alienated too many shoppers at this point who have moved on.

I completely agree with this! It may be uncluttered, but it is pretty bad if I can't find anything to spend a $10.00 off coupon on. The selection is so limited that I can't find anything I want to buy no matter the price. I really hope they bring back some of the stuff they used to have.

I hope they bring St. Johns Bay back too.. I am petite and these pants were pretty much the only ones that fit me without having to be hemmed. Now they have crap in the store. It looks like a throwback to the 80s with all the bright colors and the quality is just horrible.

I used to shop there all the time; but since the change I have only bot a coffee pot and some bras.

While the store may initally appear less cluttered, the quality of their clothing leaves something to be desired. Many of their racks in the Junior and Womens dept filled with so called clothing acually remind me of costume wear. Right now they have some floursecent clothes with shirts that are of the like with long cowboy fringe hanging down in the front. I mean really when did you last see people women walking around schools, works etc with that type of clothing. When they do clearance this substandard clothing out they will almost have to give it away. Poor quality, less merchandise in the stores even if on sale or clearance will they ever be what they use to be?
I noticed this also..I went in quite a bit at Christmas with the buttons and the last time I went in a couple weeks ago I honestly thought the store was going out of business it had so little stock and for the most part awful designs and colors..I mean, really hideous. My daughter got married at the end of December and I was in there looking for a nice dress right after Thanksgiving thinking holiday dresses might be out..they had one rack of short (****ty) sparkly things and throughout the season I never saw a decent assortment come in. I don't see them recovering and would not be surprised to see them go out of business.(oops..didn't know I used a banned word for describing their less than classy clothing styles..sorry!)

Good, hopefully the curtains I want will go on sale now. ;) Unless anyone has a coupon?

If your store still has curtains, snag them up soon. They will be an online only product as the stores go thru Phase 2 of remodeling. Big changes are coming again.

Are there any Penny's employees on here? What is the management saying about this epic fail? Are they trying to gloss over it and call it growing pains? Or have they admitted that the strategy was terrible?

They would have to send me a gift card of $50 to get me in the store after what I have heard.

Why? Becasue posters on here hated it you won't go?

That makes no sense.

Actually my "elcheapo" boyfriend did great on clothing for the umpteen great grandkids he has to buy for (His mom is homebound so he does all her Christmas shopping) He is a world class comparison shopper and he was very pleased with Penny's.

No, the one time I have been in there was when they first started this new strategy and I hated it then. And hearing how much worse it has gotten reaffirms my decision not to waste my time.

I always get my swimsuits at Penneys, and I was thrilled last year when the pricing went from $76 to $42. They have so little stock though that I haven't been able to find anything else to buy in there. The juniors dept got reduced to a tiny little corner of the store. Our store still has lots of dress clothes and business clothes, but being a nurse I don't need those things. When I'm not in scrubs, I'm usually in jeans or sweats and a Disney tee. I've found most of my stuff at Target and Old Navy this year.

Sad thing about Jcp. Used to be my go to store, my mom's too. Now, it's awful. Bad management.

I liked the new pricing with getting rid of the 8.99 and just making it $9. I liked getting ride of the coupons and most sales and just having every day low prices, rather than the Kohl's "it's always on 'sale' (because we jacked up the MSRP) and there is always a coupon of some type" model.

But their selection went down the toliet. All the new pricing in the world doesn't change the fact that I can't shop there if there isn't anything for me to buy in the first place!

If they fixt their inventory, I'll return. But not until then.

It's going to take some big incentives and/or changes to get me to shop at JCP again. It used to be my go-to store, but between the prices and inventory reduction, I don't even bother anymore.

Another former JCP shopper.

I just do not get the nearly no-merchandise in the store thing. I don't go to department stores to dance in the spacious, uncluttered aisles. I go to look at merchandise. If there is none, there is no reason for me to be there so I leave.

I also hate the "boutiques within a store" concept. If I want to look for work pants, I want to go to one place in the store to look at the pants, pick out a bunch and try them all on at once. I don't want to have to visit a million little areas separated by different brands. But clearly I'm unusual in that regard as that seems to be the one thing that's worked for them.

I recently got dh a couple pair of dress pants there for a really good price. If they hadn't been near the aisle as I was walking through the store on my way into the mall I wouldn't have been "shopping" in there. I literally use then as access to the mall because I get great parking spots in their lot.
I think they tried too hard to gear JCP to the younger, hipper crowd with the changes they made. I guess they didn't realize that that crowd already had their go to stores, and weren't going to suddenly shop JCP. All they did was drive away most of their regular customers. I wonder if we will see the CEO step down :scratchin

We really missed the JCP snow globes on Black Friday this year, haven't shooped there much at all since the changes.

Have to admit, I'm a huge JCP fan. My local JCP store always has plenty of stock, and is not crowded at all (which isn't too good for their business, but as a customer I'd rather not fight crowds over merchandise). However, I will say that I typically only buy dress clothes there: they have a great selection of dress clothes that I adore, and low enough prices with decent quality. I also like not to have to wade through all the different ads and novella-sized catalogs with crazy-overpriced merchandise and constant sales to offset the "normal" price (Kohl's, I'm talking to you). I'm a serious comparison shopper, but when I find myself breaking out the calculator to figure out the other store's price for a similar item is after all their sales and coupon codes and daily deals, I tend to get frustrated quickly. With JCP's "fair and square" pricing, I get a straight price in an actual dollar amount (as opposed to xx.xx+30% off=price on Sunday, but not necessarily Monday). I find that their items are of similar quality to most similar stores, and around the same price, and I will definitely miss their current pricing structure.

A couple people have mentioned that JCP seems to be trying to cater to (a) the dressy-business shopper *and/or* (b) the younger, "hipper" crowd. I would absolutely agree with that, and in my opinion it's a poor business choice. Their non-dressy selection of non-junior's clothing has seriously shrunk in the last few years, and while I love their dressy clothes, I wouldn't wear what's left of their regular clothes, except for their a.n.a jean brand, which I love. But when I have to do clinical/observational student teaching experience (like this semester), JCP is the first place I hit for dress clothes. I suppose that (b) is also probably true. I don't actually consider myself "hip," but I do count as "young" (I think), and as a 19-year-old observational student teacher, I really appreciate having a selection of dress clothes that are age-appropriate for me. However, I can see where there is a serious problem with only trying to appeal to my particular market (young adults looking for business/dressy clothes), and I really hope they change at least that part of their strategy to stay in business. I would be sad to lose JCP.

There is a new free-standing JCP near my place of work. I like the children's department there and have found good deals on clothing for my 5 year old daughter. Most of it has been on sale or clearance though: a tutu skirt for $2, tees for $3, etc. I recently bought a two pack of cozy socks on clearance for only $1 that I am putting in a Valentine care package for my older daughter in college. Right after Christmas, I bought a pair of incredibly soft sleep pants for my husband for only $7. I wear conservative business clothing at work and really casual clothing when I'm not working so I haven't found much for myself but, as I said, I stop in frequently to look at the children's clothing and I like sales so I'm happy to see them returning.

My Penneys in Pittsburgh still has a great collection of clothing. Those neon colors are in style and in every store this year, so you might want to get used to it. I am typically a big bargain shopper, but when I buy something there now at regular price I am totally satisfied with the price I pay. Kohls will always be my first love though. LOL What I hate most about Penney's now is that there are no workers in the store. I think our two story mall store has about 4 or 5 employees in the whole store and they closed the catalog department and you have to pick up your order at the long line registers and they get it for you. I find it hard to believe that the catalog department didn't do enough in sales in one day to pay one person per shift 8-10 dollars an hour to keep it open. I hope business picks up and they stay open. I love a variety of stores to shop at.
