January 17th, 2016 Southern Wonder Cruise

Sir William, you need to offer classes on how to be an expert cruiser. I keep thinking I need to start packing and then I get overwhelmed just thinking about it.

First off, make a packing list. Preferably one for each member of your party so that you don't overlook something (I do my own luggage, DW has enough to keep her busy). There are tons of packing lists online, almost all of which are very similar. I downloaded several, combined them into one list, edited it for duplicates and removed stuff I'd never take, and then added the few things I wanted to take but were not on the list (for example, Disney magnets for the cabin door, lanyards and trading pins, etc).

I also do a day-by-day chart of some kind showing each day's planned activities (excursions, theme nights, beach & pool, etc) and any special clothing or items I might need for that day. Then I then add up how many shirts, pants, shorts, etc that I'll need for the week.

Now comes the hard part - cutting out about 1/2 to 2/3 of the clothing. I try to wear pants, shorts and shirts at least twice, or maybe even three times on a cruise. Most times these aren't worn all day but for just a few hours at a time (especially if you're spending time at the beach or pool), so no need for several outfits each day. I have two outfits I wear for dinner, alternating them each night. We dress up for formal night and I wear the same outfit (my tux) for semi-formal night as well to justify the weight and space. DW takes an LBD and just changes the accessories. Shoes are tough, but I try to keep it down to just 3 pair.

Kids are a totally different issue and what you take is heavily dependent on the child. Some kids need multiple outfits every day (so plan on spending some time in the ship's laundromat), while others may be able to get by like an adult. For small children, pack outfits into individual zip-lock bags so all you need to do is grab one and dress them, and then you can put the dirty clothes back into the bag.

I don't take anything extra for "contingencies." I just make do. I have a light windbreaker that I take, which serves as my jacket to the airport, as a rain jacket, and for any cool days that may occur on the cruise (we had really cold temps one year at Castaway Cay).

About a week before the cruise I do a practice pack: I pack everything I plan to take and check it off on my packing list. This is a good way to (1) make sure you have everything, and (2) that it will all fit in your luggage without busting the zipper or giving the porter a hernia. If you have too much, get rid of some of it. Also, for a family consider cross-packing, putting at least one outfit for each person in everyone's luggage so in case a bag is delayed (or lost), everyone has a change of clothes. The practice pack should also include your passports, cruise documents, etc. After you finish, you can unpack whatever you may need before the final pack. When you do the final pack, use your packing list again so you don't forget anything.

If you don't have a travel luggage scale get one! I weigh my bags at home before I travel, and then when I repack to go home. I try to keep my bags about 5kg (10-12lbs) under the weight limit when leaving home so I have weight (and space) for souvenirs.

When the cruise is over, go over your packing list, add anything you wish you'd taken, and note anything that wasn't needed. For the next cruise think twice about packing it what you didn't need. This may not apply to all things: I have a small flashlight in case of a power failure or to help me get around the cabin in the early morning without disturbing DW. I don't always need it, but I never leave home without it. I've reviewed my packing list after every cruise (and other trips as well), and now it's very rare for me to add or delete anything.

Bottom line: Don't wait until the last minute to begin packing, or pack without a list. You'll end up forgetting something important like someone's clothes, your clothes, passports, etc. It happens a lot.

I am making piles - I have a cruise packing list but its more general items and number so I can pick out new clothes to take!

That is similar to DW's method. Over the last few weeks she has begun piles of clothing and other items she is considering taking.

She has a packing list and in general knows what she will pack, and has a few specific clothing items in mind, but otherwise makes her selection when she packs the night before we head to the airport. Inevitably, she always over packs, brings home a lot of unworn clothes, and frequently can't find something because she forgot to pack it.

I must do a hybrid because I make a daily list of activities/port plans and what clothing items are needed then I make piles and then whittle down the piles based on what is needed.

The main thing is to take just what you need and no more. The "no more" is the tricky part. o_O

I took way too much on my first few cruises, but with each one learned what to take and what to leave at home.

Here's an approach that works for me...
It turns out that sending laundry out to have them do it is not terribly expensive. Yes, it's more than the laundromat, and could get expensive with kids, but it's cheaper than hotels charge for similar service.
I did a 12 night cruise with just a carry-on by sending out laundry every day, and spent about the cost of two excursions, or maybe a few games of bingo.
And it's SO much easier than using the laundromat (the time, the waiting, etc.).

We've used the laundry service a few times but we've also never sailed more than 7 days. I usually have my tux pressed, and we've had a few items cleaned after food was spilled on them, but have never needed to do much laundry on a cruise. Last year we stayed a week in Orlando (DW had a conference) and we did laundry before the cruise. Did the same in Paris a few years ago before we took a river cruise. However, we usually can get by with a suitcase each.

Yes I agree - the pressing services are great. I refuse to do laundry on a cruise - defeats the purpose imho. If something spills on something I need its going to go to the laundry service - we also haven't sailed over 7 days then park trips before/and or after. Happy packing y'all!

Just spent a few minutes changing some of our excursion times. Initially we had all early departures, but DW didn't like that as she likes to sleep in when we cruise. We also prefer to have breakfast in the MDRs instead of the buffet at Beach Blanket Buffet (Cabana's on the other ships) as they have better GF options for her. So now 3 of our excursions are in the afternoon.

Mostly packed! I did my pre-pack this afternoon. Final packing this time next week (we fly out Friday).

When I was documenting all of the final details yesterday for our excursions, I had the same realization that all of them have early start times. I'm a morning person so works for me but DH & DS are not going to be too thrilled!

Same also a morning person. I'm up by around 6 (after nearly 40 years of getting up at 4.30am, this is sleeping in for me), even if I don't set an alarm. Usually I walk 3 miles on the Promenade Deck and then have tea and read on our veranda until DW begins to surface. Hadn't planned to do that this trip as we had such early excursions but now I'll have to reconsider that.

I just went into our reservation, selected the same excursion and then "check availability" to see if any different times came up. If so, I selected a later departure time and then confirmed it.

Great idea - I double checked and ended up moving one of my excursions as well. Thanks

Hi, I really really want to be a part of the Fish Extenders. I am new to this but not to sailing with Disney lol. It is just myself and my husband. I would love to know if I am doing this properly and learn more about it. Our stateroom is 8532. I would love to also be a gifter lol. So if I see a bag or holder hanging by the door or off the fish- that stateroom is taking part correct? Also within this thread if I see a stateroom number listed- I can copy it down with girl/boy and ages is that correct? Thrilled to pieces to be a part and would love to help make others smile and share in the fun. Thanks in advance.
Mary and George Stateroom 8532 both adults. (Tinkerbell, Anna)(Goofy Mickey)

HI I just saw this thread for the FE Group for the January 17 Wonder cruise! My mom and I just booked this as a mother daughter trip and it will be her first Disney Cruise. I love joining FE groups and was wondering if it was too late for the 2 of us to join!
Thanks so much and Happy New Year!
Marissa
I would like to join in also...posted too

Unfortunately, posts have been removed from a number of Cruise Meets threads including this one.

PLEASE review the Cruise Meet Policy regarding Cruise Meet and Fish Extender programs. - http://www.disboards.com/showthread.php?t=3353477

Links to Cruise Meet discussion/Fish Extenders other than those on the DIS may not be posted or offered by any other means (PM, email, "search" directions).

Cruise Meet threads are doing just fine still managing meet and FE discussions right here on the DIS as they have since FE began (also here on the DIS).

FE organizers generally need to know how many people (adults/children) are participating in each cabin with child ages for age appropriate gift giving. Other information you would like to share such as names, allergies, favorite characters, etc. is up to you. Other personal information is not really necessary. Those organizing FEs typically ask for the information to be posted in the meet thread or sent to them via PM. If no one comes forward to organize a FE for this cruise, perhaps someone can start that right in this thread.

Enjoy!

Thanks in advance for your cooperation.
Read the basics- so excited how do I make sure to be able to be involved please?

I'm glad I've read this blog or I wouldn't have had any idea that San Sebastián festival is that weekend and we need more time to drive in to the pier. We are staying at the Hyatt Place Bayamon. Does anyone know if that's too far? Anyone coming from Canada? Anyone interested in FE?
Interested in FE from Florida though no help there. Some friends from CA are also staying at the Hyatt.
