Jameson/Jamison - is it a boy or girl name?

I know a boy and a girl with the name. I think it's adorable either way!!

Congrats!!

OP here again! Wow, thanks for all the responses!

I really don't care if someone thinks it's "appropriate" (WTH does that mean, anyway? :confused3 ) or not. That's not what I asked. You don't have to like it, no big deal. Although, I do think it seems a *tad* high and mighty to come on here and decree what's "appropriate" or not, based on whether you like it and/or whether you think it's historically valid. I hear lots of names I don't like - but I don't kid myself that *I* know what is "appropriate" and what's not.

And sorry I keep putting appopriate in quotation marks - it's just such an odd and rude thing to say.

My main question, I think, has been answered - people generally think it's a boy's name. I love the nickname Jay and that's what he'd be called everyday. My preference is actually naming him James - but DH is so in love with the name Jameson that I'm trying to keep an open mind. :)

Again - I don't give two hoots about the porn or liquor connection. I've had my share of alcohol in my life and I've never heard of Jameson whiskey until this thread. Jenna Jamison is a has-been who'll be unknown by the next generation.

No need to get mad and defensive because someone gave an opinion which you asked for. You asked boy or girl; I replied neither. I was responding to someone else (not you) when asked why.

I enjoy name etymology. I know it is too much for some people. But let's also be realistic. It's good you don't care about the connotations. But it's even better you are aware of them before saddling a kid with a name.

FYI Jamison is the surname for son of James. Jameson is just an incorrect spelling of that.

Not mad. :) I don't care if you like it or not, frankly. Just commenting on an arrogant attitude that I neither understand nor respect. But hey - to each his own!

Have a nice night. :)

Sorry, porn star. Or maybe a butler.

I'm 29 and I still recognize the name Linda Lovelace--that kind of noteriety doesn't die quickly. Still, I guess if you vetoed any name with a possibly of being connected to something unsavory there wouldn't be much left.

I love the name Jameson for a boy. I think its too masculine for a girl.
OP, Its a great name, no matter how its spelled, or no matter what nickname you give your little one. Congrats!

.

::yes:: ::yes:: ::yes::

some people don't realize that their opinions are not fact and try to present them as if they are.

As far as Jay as a name, there's nothing wrong with using that if that's what he'll be known as.

By the way, Congrats on the good news!

You asked if it was a boy or girl name to us. We answered that it reminds us of liquor - not a gender- or a porn person - female. Name your child what you like and no- you shouldn't care what anyone else thinks, but when you ask a question you should expect an answer. You don't have to like it but there is always that possibility that someone might answer your question in a manner in which you don't like. Good luck and I hope you enjoy your little miracle whatever you chose to name him/her!:cutie:

Definitely boy. I mean SON is a dead give-away.

It definitely has that last-name-turned-first name ring to it, which is trendy and may seem dated at some point in the future -- but since the boy will be able to fall back on "James", that's not a problem. His business cards could even be printed with "James" and it wouldn't be untruthful.

I don't have any associations -- good or bad -- with the name. It just makes me think of James with a tweak, James with a little doctoring to make it a bit fancy. If anything, the -son part could be seen as a little snooty, but not strongly so; since he'll certainly never be called Jameson in everyday life, it's not a big deal.

I definitely like Jameson better than Jamison. The "e" makes it clear that it's a variation of James, not Jamie. Since Jamie can be a girl, keeping the "e" keeps you firmly in the masculine world.

I don't care for Jay -- no reason, you just can't like everything -- but I do like Jamie. Hmmm . . . now that I think of it, I definitely like Jamie better for a girl than for a boy. Jimmy isn't too far out for this name either. I would definitely go with James or Jameson on the birth certificate because James can always be called Jamie, but it can't go the other way. Jamie and Jay are both a little "casual", and that may or may not turn out to be your child's personality. My mom intended to give me a traditional name and call me by a common nickname (kind of like James /Jamie); she said that from the day I was born the nickname never fit -- but the traditional name she'd chosen did.

It sounds like a last name to me. I would say it could go either way...For names that could go either way I feel they are more appropriate for girls.

Thank you, we are very excited!

When I said I don't give two hoots, I didn't mean that I was upset or anyone was offending me. I know that there will always be differing viewpoints. What I meant by the "two hoots" comment was - the liquor/porn connection doesn't bother me at all. It doesn't factor into my decision on whether I like the name or not. To me, it's irrelevant. (sp?? ;) )

Honestly, I'm not even *sure* if I love the name or not. I'm still mulling it over, but I admit, it is growing on me. :thumbsup2

That is something to think about. Part of the reason I like Jay is *because* it's casual and laid back. But if that doesn't fit our kiddo's personality, I don't know if I want to be calling him Jameson day in and day out. Hmmmm...

James would be my preference. But DH has a *thing* for unusual names with common nicknames. He has a cousin who's name is Mathias - but goes by Matt. DH loves that. Or Bennett, call him Ben. He's been trying to talk me into Jameson for soooo long but my big hang-up with it was, I thought it sounded feminine - hence the thread. But now that I find that most people feel it's a boy's name, it's kinda growing on me. Honestly, I would be doing this more for my husband than for me. He sort of let me "take the reins" with our daughter's name, so...

I do, too. If I had another son I was considering Augustus (Gus) or Elias (Eli).

Congratulations! You must be so excited.

Although I do like the sound of the name, to me it is a whiskey. Or it reminds me of the porn star Jenna Jameson (saw on celebrity baby blog - she's expecting twins right now!) Anyway, I don't think it is at all pretty or feminine so I guess I would say, if you do use it, don't use it for a girl.

I do like the name James, especially with the nickname Jay.

It really is so amazing. I know I loved being pregnant. It is so exciting! You'll go back and forth on the name thing a million times and then all of a sudden it will hit you and it will be the right name for your little darling.:cutie:

How about Jayden?
Then dh gets the unusual and you get the Jay?
Now that you've decided on a boy name I bet you'll end up with a girl!

I wanted to name my last son Mateo but it didn't go over well with everyone else and when my little guy was born blonde with blue eyes it didn't seem to fit. So we went with the backup name.

I had a friend with a little boy called Jamison. The reason she picked it was so that he could decide himself what he later wanted to be called - Jamison, Jay, Jamie, James, etc. She said it was the most flexible name she could find. She hated her own first name, lol.
