Jameson/Jamison - is it a boy or girl name?

well, I immediatly thought of Jamison Parker from Simon & Simon, so I', not sure "new" and "trendy" are all that accurate.

Trendy names come from what people grew up with, a lot of times it is from tv shows/movies. Consider soap opera names, like Avery, Taylor, etc.)
For example, think Madison and Splash. Madison became popular when kids who remembered Splash grew up and had their own kids.

OK, but Jamison is the actors name, not the charecters name. I think that removes the trendy aspect.

It doesn't. One person with the name back then isn't what makes the name trendy. It is trendy now because it a popular name with no historial significance and is being used on both genders. Do any research on any name website.

When I taught preschool, I had a girl named Jamison, and everyone called her Jamie, so she is who comes immediately to mind when I think of that name. However, I do think it is more of a boy name than a girl name.

But having no historical significance doesn't mean it isn't appropriate? :confused3 It just means it isn't your personal preference. Now the name Hitler, that would be an example of an inappropriate name.

As for the link, unless the preschoolers these days are watching porn and drinking hard liquor, I don't see the issue. The next big porn stars may be named Grace or Matthew. I wouldn't base naming my kids off of a couple of people (who most people don't even know, I know I've never heard the name) who will be long forgotten in the near future.

It just has no historical significance or placement as a first name. It's simply one of these newer trendy names. That is why I have the opinion that it is not an appropriate first name. Besides that, as others have stated, it is unappealing due to the liquor and porn star associations.

My son has a good friend name Jameson. I like the name alot!

I think it could work for a boy or a girl. However, I only know one person with that name and he is a male. He goes by Jamey.

I only know one person with that name,,and it's his last name, but it's definitely a boy name for me..and I agree with your thought on giving the full name and then calling him Jay.
I like it!

ETA: Never heard of any liquor called Jameson until the other day when a friend mentioned someone she knew had kids named Killian and Jameson..and that they were both liquors.
Also as for porn names, come on. Maybe if you named your kid Ronald Jeremy that would be an issue, but otherwise...

DH and I found out on our Disney trip a week or so ago that we are expecting a new baby!

It's still early but we are discussing names. We have a disagreement about the name Jameson/Jamison. Let me ask you - does it sound like a boy's name or a girl's name to you? TIA!!

If you have to ask, maybe it's a name you want to rethink. As someone who had/has a less than "normal" name growing up, I can tell you that I am so sensitive to this issue. I was teased all the time for my name, and it just made things so difficult for me growing up. I swore when I had my own kids I would make darn sure I gave them names that could not obviously be made into something mean. (Yes, I know kids can make fun of ANY name, but I think you know what I mean). I also wanted them to have names that were obviously male or female, which is not an easy thing to do these days!

Just 2 cents from someone who went through a lot of crap for my name, and to this day I ask my parents if it was worth it (and why did they give my 3 siblings normal names and not me??!!!)

Jamison made me think Jenna Jamison too. **dating myself

But honestly I think it could go either way as Jamison would be shortened to Jamie(I have a neighbor named Jamie and she's a girl)

Boy

(and this from the mom of Jamie -- a girl!)

Hi! 1st grade teacher here:teacher:

If I saw that name on my class list my initial thought would be "boy", but nowadays you can never be too sure, so I would have to go check with the Kindergarten teachers just to be sure! :rotfl:

Who knew the DIS was so full of porn fans and whiskey drinkers? ;)

I've never heard of Jenna Jameson, and the whiskey connotation didn't strike me at all either.

The the OP, I think it's a great name for a boy, and using a nickname that you like is very appropriate too. I like having more formal names for kids that they can shorten to a nickname if they like...or if they prefer to use the formal name when they are older, they can.

I don't think the name is too trendy or "out there" at all. Congrats on your new little one!

What do you call newer? Because last names as first names have been in use for a long, long time.

Jamison, in particular, came into usage (with some degree of popularity - I'm sure it was used prior to this) in the 50's. By 2007 it was ranked the 502nd most popular name for boys. It is not listed in the top 1000 names for girls. This information is taken from official records.

Using last names as first names has been a practice for much longer than this, though. For instance, my son's name Finley was almost as popular in the 1880's as it is today (around 700th most popular name for boys). It wasn't until the 90s that it started to be used occasionally for girls.
