Jameson/Jamison - is it a boy or girl name?

OP here. Thanks for the thoughts everyone!

My DH will be pleased that you are all saying boy. He LOVES the name. It's growing on me, actually, but I was a bit worried that it sounded a little feminine. Glad I'm wrong. :)

We would call him Jay. Our daughter's name is Claire. Do Claire and Jay sound like two totally different name "styles?"

It sounds like a butler's name.

I have a Claire also! :lovestruc I think those names sound great together.

I don't think kid's names have to be the same "style". I think people should name their kids the names they like and not worry about rhyming, same sound at end, same first letter, etc.

If you will call him Jay, why not just name him that?

I have to agree with the OPs who said it reminded them of whiskey & porn - everytime I'd call out the kid's name I'd have a flash of Jenna Jameson the adult movie star or liquor!

Hehe. Well, I think that, in my kids' generation, Jenna Jamison won't be so well-known. And hey - as for liquor goes - that rules out Jim, Jack...and countless others I'm sure. ;)

Not worried about the porn or liquor connection - just wanted to make sure it sounded like a boy's name! :thumbsup2

When I see the two different spellings, I see Jameson (two syllables Jame-son) and Jamison (three syllables jam-i-son (short i sound) ). Are the pronunciations the same?

Visually, the first is definitely a boys name and I think the second could be either, but leans toward a boys name :).

And I don't think of porn or alcohol when I see either name nor do I think any of his little friends will think of that either. lol

It is a boy name to me, but I love it! It's been on my list for a while, if I ever have children.

The only Jameson I have ever seen was a little girl who went to my old church. I think it is really cute, and definitely different.

How is it not appropriate? Who determines what is an appropriate name? Isn't it just individual taste and preference? I do not like a lot of names I hear, but unless the name is cruel, I don't see how it is inappropriate? :confused3

Agree. It's a last name. Not an appropriate first name for either gender.

My cousin, a girl, is named Jamison. She is called Jamie...which is very common for a girl as well as a boy (I actually now more girls named Jamie than boys who are usually James or Jim(my)).

Hey...its a great name. My son is Jamison Patrick, born the day after St Patty's day

My ex didn't want to name the boys after himself because he was already a 3rd. So, our first son has his middle name and my last son is named Jamison..because he is James' son.

We do call him James most of the time, or Jamie. But since he started school he discovered lots of little girls named Jamie, so that was a no go.

It just has no historical significance or placement as a first name. It's simply one of these newer trendy names. That is why I have the opinion that it is not an appropriate first name. Besides that, as others have stated, it is unappealing due to the liquor and porn star associations.
