I've never started a political thread before, but WOW

I was refering to this post on the dis and anyone who would misconstrue obamas ad currently.....
no shame here....:thumbsup2

Obama will be out explaining what he really meant.....again!

Nope, that ad will be going down the memory hole by midnight! You know, not that there was anything wrong with the ad. It's all just a bunch of "misconstruing." But it'll be gone asap.

and again i say you don't need all of your fingers or even any to know how to send an e-mail....
no issue......
don't cheapen his service by using it as such petty political ploy

I think it's BHO who's cheapening his service.

I have to agree with you there. The last thing Obama wants is to remind people what McCain has done for the country in the past.

I guess I missed the part in poli-sci that said "Our President must be able to type 60 WPM, and also take shorthand. Microsoft Windows experience a plus."

I understand the ad tactic I really do. THE MAN CAN'T TYPE. Neither can my husband, but guess what he is still one of the top in his field around here. It just takes him longer to fill out paperwork.

And yes, McCain has problems typing due to having his arms BROKEN REPEATEDLY in the Hanoi Hilton. Would you struggle through pain and discomfort to prepare a document when you could hire a secretary who could help you?:confused3

Hasn't McCain himself said he wants to learn?

I echo what GUy said. THere are many adaptive aids to help someone get on the computer. Severely disabled college students using laptops. I took care of a college professor that was a functional quadraplegic - he only had thumb control and some gross upper extremity motor movement . He had some simple brace he wore when he tped, but otherwise he faired pretty well.

um.... the misconstruing was done by you all here not by obama...you all twist my words very handily....learning from the masters in the republican party aren't you!!
:lmao: :lmao: :lmao:

No he didn't. Where's the mocking there? If he can move his hand or arm at all, which we know he can, he can use email.

Presidents way back in the day didn't have e-mail. :confused3 Gee, I wonder how they ran the country without a computer.

But before he learned how to use the adaptive equipment, would you have mocked him for his lack of skill?

I also understand the ad tactic. I'm sure that Obama wanted to say that McCain is out of touch. On the other hand, many of my family members can't afford computers, does that make them less of a person because they don't shoot out e-mails?

It turned me off. I guess that's my point.

I'm in my 40's and I know people my age that have no clue how to use a computer. I don't think it is a matter of a disability, the computer is probably something McCain never needed to use. I hate negative campaigning. I wish politicians would just focus on themselves and tell me what they are going to do if they become President.

I'm sure McCain will come back at O'bama. If he was smart, he should poke fun at himself and do a commercial showing how he is willing to learn and have a young kid show him too.

Man, I wish the election was over.

Sorry, there's no nuance is mocking the disabled. It's plainly evident for all to see. I can't imagine the ads Obama would have run against an FDR. "Stand up, Frank! Stand up! Oooh, my. Not ready to lead!"

Lara, you're fine. Anyone belittling anyone else for physical difficulties is a cheap shot, no matter what job you have, or want.
And if the whole ad is about whether he can type his emails or not, what is the point. Many people hire people to do that for them. :confused3

There's a difference of not being able to use a computer (physically) an d not knowing how to use a computer.

There are many hardware and software adaptations for handicapped individuals. Technology is an integral part of our society - social networks connect us, help us form communities, and create opportunities that wouldn't otherwise exist (for better or for worse).

If McCain physically cannot use a computer but does through adaptive technology, then good.

If McCain literally cannot use a computer and has no technical skills or experience, then that is sad and he is missing a part of what shapes and influences our society. He may be able to have a theoretical understanding of it, but that isn't the same as experience. And in order to connect to today's users (notice, I'm saying users - not age specific here), he needs those skills and understandings gained through those experiences.

The world is a small place today, with relationships being built across borders. My DD has friends in Germany and Japan, DS has a college roommate from Cameroon who he was able to connect with via Facebook before meeting on campus. The nature of how we can build and maintain relationships have changed and I wonder if he really gets that.

If the seven houses didn't work, I don't know what made them think this would. I'm surprised that nobody in the campaign had the foresight to see the potential for how this could be interpreted negatively towards people with disabilities and/or McCain's war injuries.
