I've never started a political thread before, but WOW

This whole McCain CAN'T use a computer because of POW is ridiculous. Ask ANY special Ed teacher, they can give you names of special computer and programs for individuals with limited mobility. I'm talking paralyzed on one side with limited use of the other arm programs. Special keyboards are made; heck even programs with speech output are made. McCain wouldn't have to type one thing, just speak into a mic.

McCain can speak into a mic - right?
Oh yeah - upside down maybe. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=yOFY_LSFq28

McCain hasn't taken a proactive look into modern technology. Let's be honest people. It's not sin. But to keep up this argument is painful to read. Too many excuses. My grandmother (who was 73 when she died in 2003) knew how to use the computer when she died. She even was a part of this senior chat room. No, my grandmother wasn't a senator- she was a widow/retired nurse that took an interest in something new and went for it - and she had fun along the way.:surfweb: I’m sure would have a ball if he took an interest.

I believe you mean rhetoric....
Yup...but I just always write it the other way (inside joke)

Firstoff, I have been a IT engineer for 30 years. I have worked on MANY projects with both State & federal governments. These include, Archiving of electronic documents and the acceptance of Digital Signatures.

Trust me when I tell you the Federal Govt is WAY ahead technology wise. And no loss of any technology usuage during the Bush Admin.

RE: Shaping the economy to compete in the digital age...

Perhaps he would like to bring your banking system into the 21st century, with the rest of us. You guys are still writing cheques for everything, and if you use your debit cards it can sometimes take 2-3 days for the debits to clear your account. Mailing in cheques for your mortgage payment? Mailing bill payments? For such a forward thinking nation, your banking system is really very archaic..

That is total MALARKY!!!!! Both Checks & Debit cards are no completely automatic withdrawels. If people decide they want to use checks, why shpuldnt they. Maybe their bank doesnt charge them for checks, and does so for debits. Who knows, who cares...that is a individual right to do whatever they want, as long as it gets paid.

The "army of teachers" is really very simple. Your public education system is in the toilet. I make that assumption based on the number of people on these boards who either homeschool or pay for private schools. The citizens of America don't trust your education system to prepare their children to go out in the world. The evidence of how your system has failed the adults is evident everyday on this board in posts riddled with spelling and grammatical errors. I am not talking about uncommon words, I am talking about simple, everyday words. I was reading a popular thread the other day and the OP continuously wrote "responce" for response. Someone else always said she was "scaird" of things. Some of these gems come from people who are currently homeschooling. That should scare the snot out of you. .

How someone 'spells" on a internet board is probably the least scariest thing about a internet board.
My point is "What does a ARMY OF TEACHERS have to do with a technology policy?
We do have trouble in some parts of our Public Education systems, but I dont beieve any thinks it has to do with a shortness of teachers.

The only way to combat the functional illiteracy that seems to be rampant is to have more and better teachers. Pay them a decent wage, and for God's sake, set some standards! Give them the resources to do the job. The whole notion that school funding is based on daily attendance is so absurd I can't even wrap my brain around it. How can your county or state legislatures think that because 6 students are out for a week with the flu, the school needs less money to educate the rest? Ludicrous.

Somebody needs to fix your education, and at least Obama has a plan.

Again what does any of this have to do with a TECHNOLOGY Plan??????:confused3

And as far a Obama saving our education system, he done one heck of a HORRIBLE job in Illinois, where he was a State ssenator for a few years. If he couldnt fix the Education system on a local level, why should we believe that he can fix it on a National level.

Again, this man is coming to the Job interview with no Resume & no References!

I'd rather my president concern himself with other matters than spooling around the net.

BO says he uses the net to check sports scores. Now that's honorable. How long before his fantasy football team is a plank in his platform?

!

I don't know what you are saying about cheques and debit cards. In Canada, when we use our debit cards the transaction is immediate. Cheques of course take a couple of days to clear. I have read 100's of posts over the years where American posters talk about debit transactions not posting.

My point about the spelling errors wasn't that the errors themselves should scare you, but the fact that some of these people are actually homeschooling their children because they don't trust the government to do it properly. It's a vicious circle.

Exactly.

McCain was a fighter pilot. He lived with technology. Avionics requires a huge amount of understanding and interpretation.

Yes, I did read your links, but they had no relevance to what we're attempting to discuss here, again, this is not about "emailing."

McCain cashes in with Internet fund-raising chat
February 11, 2000
Web posted at: 12:07 p.m. EST (1707 GMT)

CHARLESTON, South Carolina (CNN) -- In a new approach toÊthe often tedious campaign task of raising money, Republican presidential hopeful Sen. John McCain chatted on the Internet Thursday with 500 people who paid $100 each to watch him via satellite and send in e-mail queries.

The Arizona senator was online for about an hour during a multimedia webcast from the College of Charleston moderated by his wife, Cindy. He answered e-mail questions on a wide range of topics, including the environment, patriotism, and Internet taxation.

"I hope the Congress of the United States would pass a law and I would sign it permanently banning taxation on the Internet," McCain said.

McCain said that the Internet helps his campaign connect with younger voters and others who normally turned off by politics. He has so far raised $4 million via the Web and recruited thousands of volunteers, including Intel Corp. Chairman Andy Grove.

"Even more impressive than the money is the way we communicate," said McCain, who raised $50,000 during the chat, in addition to an estimated $500,000 taken in from fund-raisers in Washington and 17 other locations, where he appeared simultaneously via satellite.

McCain is locked in a tight race with Texas Gov. George W. Bush for the February 19 South Carolina primary. He's scheduled to visit New York and New Jersey for more fund-raisers on Friday.

Thursday's chat was a big hit with one Charleston family who logged on.

"In a way it was sort of a family meeting," said McCain supporter Steve Lenes. "We had the children here and we got to be with his wife and be with him. It was nice medium in that regard."

McCain sent advisors to Minnesota last year to borrow from the Internet playbook of Gov. Jesse Ventura, who raised $70,000 off the Web during his surprise election win as a Reform Party candidate in 1998. The plans appear to have paid off.

Although Bush has taken in more than four times as much money as McCain so far in the 2000 presidential campaign, McCain has out-raised his Texas rival -- as well as Democratic hopefuls Al Gore and Bill Bradley -- over the Internet. More than $1 million in credit card donations alone flooded into the McCain Web site 48 hours after his victory in the New Hampshire primary.

"It will change America permanently because the next presidential campaign will be run over the Internet," McCain predicted.

There were a few computer glitches in a room where reporters were watching the event. The images of McCain and his wife appeared jumpy and froze a few times during the chat.

Asked whether he feared that Bush hackers would disrupt the event, McCain joked, "I don't know if any of them have that sophistication level."

:rotfl: I read the first and last page of this thread. The Obama campaign has really become unhinged. :rotfl:
Out of touch with the people? And Obama is in touch? Obama is talking about this and thinks being able to send email is what the people are concerned about? I don't gave a darn if McCain can send an email or not. Protect our contrary from terrorists, keep our taxes low, stop abusive government spending, etc. If he does it by way of carrier pigeon it is OK with me as long as he gets it done. That is what I and many Americans care about.

and again i say you don't need all of your fingers or even any to know how to send an e-mail....
no issue......
don't cheapen his service by using it as such petty political ploy

McCain doesn't make an excuse about his injury. He doesn't have to use a computer for his job, just like Clinton didn't use one. However, for Obama's camp to bring it up is an insult.

I could also spin this by saying, Obama has never been on a battlefield, put on military gear etc. so therefore, he is not qualified to be commander and chief. Obama's camp needs to change the direction they are going if they want him elected.

I didn't read all the post before posting and someone else already talked about the military, sorry.

No, it doesn't even matter if one was a former POW.

Stop playin' on the sympathy votes, most of us are concerned about the actual issues.

Like which pig is wearing lipstick and whther it is Maybelline or Lancome. Stuff like that.

Actually, that article quoted from 2000 is why I could have been OK voting for McCain in earlier elections. He stood up to the Religious Right, Falwell and Robertson. Unfortunately, much has changed since that article was written. He is now pandering to the religious right for their votes, and the selection of Palin confirms that. So sad.

Heck, in 2000, MCCain would have had my vote.

But his illigitimate black baby prevented him from winning the primary.

The OP wanted to know about Obama mocking McCain over injuries he received as a POW ... and this is your reply?:confused3

The OP asked a ridiculous question and it got the reply it deserved.

The fact the McCain can't use a computer has nothing to do with his POW injuries. If Stephen Hawking can find a way, so could McCain. He doesn't want to and that's the point.

It does have to do with his injuries. When M uses his arms to write emails on a computer it is very painful. So for BO to say,....Mccain cant use email or a computer, it is very disprespectful.

Stop pandering to Obama because you think he is your savior. Last time I checked, I never had to make excuses for my savior.

Not everyone is as informed as you are. You are a very thoughtful person to tell the OP how ridiculous they are for asking a question.

So what does Stephen Hawking use for his computer? There are people who hold a pencil in their mouths to use keyboard. Where there's a will, there's away.

And you can put that disrespect BS to bed. This is a political campaign not an ice cream social at the local Sunday school. The "outrage du jour" of the McCain supporters is becoming a running joke.

Btw, Obama is not my savior so you can put that strawman to bed too.

However, Obama did hit the nail on the head and the McCain supporters tried to use the "POW card" to ridiculous effect. Again.

McCain can't use a computer because he doesn't want to. Using what happend 40 years ago to excuse what's happening today is ludicrous.

Ummm..last time I checked, Hawking was in a wheel chair, unable to walk, and unable to move his arms or legs. McCain, is busy, works, is a senator.

does BO really know McCAin can't use a computer? Get real. He is the one who wants to talk about issues, instead he wants to know if McCAin can use email? Are you serious?

It is obvious that he was not mocking McCain for his war injuries any more than wearing a flag pin maes you a good American. The premise is not only flawed but intentionally misleading.:sad1:
