It's A Small World - A Never-ending Pre-trip Report

That sounds very much like Provence food!

We have never been to this part of France before. I have been to Alsace and we both have been to Paris and surrounding area and have been to Nice, but that is the grand total of our exposure to France.

And I think that Narbonne might still be Provence

Narbonne is definitely in the Languedoc. It comes under the Aude department, which is the same department Carcassonne falls under.

I always loved the food there!

That sounds promising.

If you like seafood you need to try the fish soup!

Graham loves seafood, but I don't go anywhere near it.

I have been to Carcassonne! Great castle. I think it is on the other side of the Rhone from where we usually were, so I understand why this is a different department. Need to find a map...

You will find some typical French food there as well. For example pate as a starter and creme brullee for dessert. But a lot of it really has definite Mediterranean influences. And I am sure that by now you can find Italian food and Asian food in France anywhere, just like in all other European countries.

My parents loved telling the story when I was little how we were on vacation in Arles when I was four years old and I refused to eat anything else than hot dogs. There was one cafe in Arles that specialized in German beer and they were serving German hot dog sausages. That's where we had to go every night for my hot dog. I later found out that my mother was very happy to have her daily German beer there as well... And then my parents "dumped" me with the concierge at our hotel, who had a little boy my age, and then they went for their dinner.

I have been to Carcassonne!

Carcassonne is another of my bucket list places that I will cross off the list on that trip. That instalment is a couple of updates away.

creme brullee for dessert

That I can live with.

And I am sure that by now you can find Italian food and Asian food in France anywhere

I am sure of this. Indeed, my favourite Chinese restaurant is in Champs sur Marne near Disneyland Paris.

What a cute story.

Oh wow!

Narbonne looks fantastic!!!

That is what I thought. It was literally love at first site for me. Yet I think this may well be the least pretty place we are planning to visit on that part of the trip. I will have updates about the contenders for the prettiest place coming up over the next week.

Corinna

I may be back with a small ship related update later if I get the time, but I just wanted to throw out there that today I can officially say "I am going on holiday this month". This is a glorious feeling.

Sorry I got behind, I went on a road trip to Florida for my birthday with the dogs. I'm really enjoying reading about your plans, everything sounds very exciting and the scenery is beautiful!

I didn't care for butterbeer myself, it just tastes like cream soda which I don't care for.

You're going on vacation this month!!!! :cool1:

Narbonne looks like a beautiful and interesting city! What a great place to base your operations out of. I hope that you see flamingoes!

Plans looking good but you have now done yoir cruise! I am a little late. I love those musical fountains in Barcelona and anything by Gaudi. It has an almost reptile look to it.

You selected good hotels. You will love Harry Potter studios! Get there early for your time slot! The butterbeer is nice. I prefer Le fous brew in MK though. I hope they have the Knights Bus there when you go.

Jo works near Watford :-)

Oh my a Citreon 2CV what fun! I would be all over that like a rash. The gears that were up by the steering wheel! My friend had one of those in lime green we called Kermit. We had great fun.

Narbonne looks great!

Sorry I got behind

You have not missed a great deal. Things have been crazy round here. I am hoping to get caught up over the next couple of days and then it is hopefully smooth sailing until we leave,

I went on a road trip to Florida for my birthday with the dogs.

I hope you had a great time.

I didn't care for butterbeer myself

We will see how I take to it.

Cream soda is something I love so I should be OK.

You're going on vacation this month!!!! :cool1:

Yes, three weeks from today, we will have done the first leg of the journey.

Narbonne looks like a beautiful and interesting city!

I think though and yet it is probably the least spectacular of the places we are planning to visit.

What a great place to base your operations out of.

I think this has worked out rather well.

I hope that you see flamingoes!

I hope so, too. We were lucky enough to see wild flamingoes in Dubai in 2009, which was an amazing experience.

Plans looking good but you have now done yoir cruise!

All of this is still in the future. We leave for our train trip across Europe in 3 weeks and then we get on the ship 10 days later.

I love those musical fountains in Barcelona and anything by Gaudi.

On both of our previous visits to Barcelona, we planned on seeing the fountains, but it never happened. This time I am determined to make it happen. I am totally in awe of Gaudi's work.

It has an almost reptile look to it.

I totally get this.

You will love Harry Potter studios!

I hope so. I have been dreaming of going there for so long.

Get there early for your time slot!

We are intending to. We will get into London at 12:30 and will head straight to Watford and check in at the hotel. Then we head over to the studios. We have a 15:30 tour booked.

I hope they have the Knights Bus there when you go.

Oh, is this not there all the time?

Oh my a Citreon 2CV what fun! I would be all over that like a rash. The gears that were up by the steering wheel! My friend had one of those in lime green we called Kermit. We had great fun.

This is one of the things I still have to book. Planning has kind of gone on the back-burner.

Narbonne looks great!

I can't wait to see this properly.

Carcassonne

Carcassonne is another place that has been on my bucket list for some considerable time and I could not be more excited to finally getting to see this. Back in 2005, I read a book called Labyrinth by Kate Mosse, which is set in Carcassonne and switches back and forth between medieval times and modern day France. This is a really good read and describes Carcassonne in some detail. So ever since I read this book for the first time, I have wanted to visit Carcassonne. We recently watched a TV mini series based on Labyrinth in preparation for the trip, but although it was enjoyable, it was not as good as the book and I was disappointed that it was not showing very much of Carcassonne.

Carcassonne is another place with a long history. There has been some settlement in this area since 3500 BC, but it was only in the 6th century BC that the hill that houses Carcassonne became an important trading post. Like Narbonne, Carcassonne became a Roman fortification. However, the really interesting part of the history came much later. Carcassonne became famous in its role in the Albigensian Crusades, when the city was a stronghold of Occitan Cathars. In August 1209 the crusading army of the Papal Legate, Abbot Arnaud Amalric, forced its citizens to surrender. Raymond-Roger de Trencavel was imprisoned whilst negotiating his city's surrender, and died in mysterious circumstances three months later in his own dungeon. Simon De Montfort was appointed the new viscount. He added to the fortifications. De Montfort links Carcassonne with Warwick Castle, which he also besieged.

Carcassonne is essentially two cities rolled into one. La Ville Basse is the new part of the town. It is also known as the ‘Bastide Saint Louis’. I am sure we will have a wander around this area. However, what we are really going to Carcassonne to is the Cité. The Cité was added to the UNESCO World Heritage list in 1997.

The Cité consists of a concentric design of two outer walls with 53 towers and barbicans. Inside those walls is the Chateau Comtal, the Basilica of Saint-Nazaire and a medieval town. Unfortunately it is not entirely authentic as it had fallen into disrepair by the early 1800s and the French government actually had planned to knock it down. This caused a huge outcry and the Cité was saved. Restoration work started in 1853. The architect Eugène Viollet-le-Duc was charged with renovating the fortress. He added the conical roofs to the towers, which would have not been there in medieval times. However, it does kind of work and I can't wait to see it for myself.

Those pictures are gorgeous! How fantastic to see this in person. Thank you for the history you've been sharing, these are places I didn't even know existed and it is very interesting to read about them.

I can't wait to see this with my own eyes.

Thank you for the history you've been sharing, these are places I didn't even know existed and it is very interesting to read about them.

As long as I can remember, I have had a real passion for history. I will never understand how people think that history is boring. Sure, I was not too keen either on reciting key dates in history, but history is so much more than that.

Corinna

I love travelling to new places and discovering their history. I'll never forget visiting a church in London and seeing the marker for one of the judges that presided over the trial of Joan of Arc or walking across the Forum in Rome. Your trip is going to be fabulous.

Jill in CO

Me, too.

Oh, I have to find out what church this is.

I really hope so.

Corinna

It was over near the Globe Theater. That's all I can remember. I just stumbled across that particular marker.

Updates on all things Ovation of the Seas

Things have been a little crazy around here again and I ended up missing a few landmarks along the day including the three week mark before I leave for this trip last Saturday and the one month mark before I get on the ship on Sunday. It also has been eventful as far as the ship is concerned.

About three weeks ago, the headline entertainment was announced. I don’t really do the shows. I think the last time I went to see a production show on the Disney ships was on the Westbound Transatlantic in 2010 when I went to see Villains Tonight. I don’t do the variety type shows at all and when we sailed on the Splendour of the Seas, I did not even consider going to any of the shows. However, with the Quantum class ships, you have to book the headline shows either ahead of time via the cruise planner on the Royal Caribbean website or on the ship via an app or the iPads that they have on board for this purpose. So I decided that once bookings online opened, I may as well book some of the shows and figured that I can always cancel later. The main stage show is called “ The Dream”. Here is the blurb for this:

This thrilling production chronicles the story of a man who is visited by his departed soulmate in a very special dream. His long-lost love has come to help him rediscover his passion for life and gives him the will to pursue his wildest dreams and to find love again. In his slumber, he will confront his deepest and most secret fears and journey on a rite of passage towards his eventual awakening. The unique combination of wonderful storytelling, soulful performances and spectacular production values will surprise and delight audiences time and time again. This is the biggest adventure of this man’s life, and Royal Caribbean audiences are invited to join him on a wild and audacious journey of discovery.

I think whichever way it goes, it will be spectacular. It will either be spectacularly good or spectacularly bad. The second show that I have booked is Spectra’s Cabaret, which is essentially a vehicle for the clever technology in the Two70 Lounge using the robo screens and the projections on the windows. I really want to see that technology in action so I made a reservation for this. I have the feeling that this has very little by way of story line, but hope that all the special effects will make up for this. There is another show in the main theatre called Life. Love. Legs, which seems to be modelled on Paris-style cabaret. I have no interest in this whatsoever so did not book this.

About two weeks ago, I got a rather ominous email from Royal Caribbean with a subject line “Important Information – Affecting Multiple Cruises”. My heart skipped a beat. With the Ovation being a new ship that at that stage had not gone in service, there is always the chance that something could go wrong. This was even more on my mind as they had just cancelled a bunch of cruises on another ship that is going through an extensive dry dock and was not finished in time. As it happened, it was only about changes to the online check in system, which I had discovered a day earlier and had already completed online check in again. However, the relief was short-lived. Somebody on Cruise Critic shared a press release from Meyer Werft later that evening stating that they had installed a new kind of propulsion system in the Ovation that was supposed to be more fuel efficient. During sea trials, it had turned out that it did not perform as expected and the Ovation would have to return to dry dock to change the new propulsion system for the propulsion system that is being used on her sister ships Quantum of the Seas and Anthem of the Seas. Meyer Werft did state that despite the unscheduled visit to dry dock, the ship would still be handed over to Royal Caribbean on time on the 8th April. I do tend to trust Meyer Werft as they have an excellent reputation and I don’t think they have ever delivered a ship late. However, in this case I was not sure if they could deliver on time. Still, I figured as we were not going for just over a month from that date, we would be OK. I started to get worried for the first cruisers when a further complication occurred. When the announcement was made, the ship was in Bremerhafen. The dry dock where the work was due to take place is in Hamburg. The original plan was that the ship was due to leave Bremerhafen on Friday evening and arrive in Hamburg in the early morning hours of Sunday. She was then supposed to leave again in the early morning hours of Tuesday morning. Due to some freak weather, the tide near Hamburg was not high enough to stick with that schedule and the whole plan was put backwards by two days. By then it had transpired that they did not have to exchange the whole of the propulsion system, but just the propellers. Everything worked like clockwork, the ship went to Bremerhafen and was handed over to Royal Caribbean on schedule on 8thApril.

This video was taken two days before the handover. The commentary is in German, but that does not actually add anything to the video. So I suggest you put this on mute and enjoy. The ship still looks like a building site, but I got really excited about what I was seeing.

On Sunday, the Ovation of the Seas arrived in Southampton. Some serious webcam stalking went on that day. It was great to see her sail into Southampton.

With her safely arrived in Southampton, the interest turned to two pressing questions: who is going to be the Godmother of the Ovation of the Seas and what will be the animal. The Quantum class ships have an animal statue on deck 15 near the Seaplex. The Quantum of the Seas has Felicia, a magenta polar bear and the Anthem of the Seas has Gigi, a rather fun looking giraffe. This was finally revealed on Monday. The Ovation of the Seas has got two animals, a mother panda reaching out to her cub. They actually look like pandas and I think they are precious:

I was not quite as excited by the announcement of the Godmother. This will be Fan Bingbing, a Chinese actress who starred in X-Men. I suppose there is another Disney connection there.

Monday and Tuesday the Ovation hosted representatives from the media and travel trade and another video of a tour of the ship emerged:

What a difference a few days make. This really has turned out to be a stunning ship and I cannot wait to get to sail on her. The first lucky people are doing so at the moment. The Ovation left for her first cruise earlier today. I cannot wait until they get back with some reviews.

Corinna

That was a little scary reading about the dry dock but glad everything went well! I like the pandas. The shows sound interesting, I hope you enjoy them. I need to come back and watch the videos.
