Is your state running out of gas?

Not in California of course. However, we use our own fuel blend and are generally reliant on Central Valley oil sent by a different pipeline operator and Alaskan crude shipped by tanker.

The issue here isn't that they'll run out of fuel immediately. The way it works is that the local fuel "depot" is filled several ways, but by pipeline is the fastest, cheapest, and (usually) most reliable. They might still be able to ship by rail tankers, sea tankers, and trucks. But that's a lot more work. Preferably truckers are only doing short trips from these fuel depots to gas stations.

I believe that it hasn't stopped fuel depots from operating if they still have fuel. But this pipeline moves up to 2.5 million barrels of fuel per day and eventually they're going to run out. The biggest issue may possibly be with airports. A lot of airports are directly serviced by pipelines.

Yeah, we (in So Cal) are already at $4/gallon :) But that's normal for going into summer (except last year with COVID and no traveling)

Well, we are in a fun position.
We have to drive to FL tomorrow - Maryland down 95. Planning on spending the night wherever .... leaving the office around 10:30 AM.
Car holds 425 gallons, I filled up this evening just to have that chore done - one less thing to worry about tomorrow.
Going down to help a family member post surgery, so there is no putting it off, although we have a day or two leeway.
Going to with a good attitude because - well, what else can we do at this point?

Huh? Is that 42 point 5? I spit coke out of my nose!

Prices are up in Pennsylvania, but I don't believe we have a shortage? Then again, I don't leave the house a lot right now.

We're at WDW right now staying offsite, and we haven't seen any trouble at the stations nearby.

The notice I read on my Gas Buddy app yesterday said that it would mostly be north Florida that would be affected.

So earlier today I texted my dd and said we are in state of emergency (VA) and gas stations are running out because people are stupid scared.

of course, she needs gas. A couple places near where we lived run out. She then is 10 cars deep, they run out. She finally finds a place. She sends me a pic of a guy filling up like 6 gas cans and his car.
see this is another thing; you suddenly need 6 gas cans filled? And no it wasn’t a lawn service.
I remember vividly the REAL gas shortage when I was a kid years ago.

We’re in SE TN & leaving on Thursday for Florida, going through Georgia.

We can make it to south Georgia, if we had to... and I guess we may end up stuck somewhere around Valdosta...

At this point, we can’t cancel any of our reservations, so we’re just going ahead & hoping for the best... because, like you said, what else can you do?

My husband keeps telling me not to worry about things we can’t control.

And the funny thing? I bought a 4-pack of toilet paper to take w/ us just in case something crazy like another toilet paper shortage happened while we were away.

yup this is exactly why we’ll have a real shortage.

Don't count on that. I'm also in the midwest and my price was 30 cents a gallon higher when I filled up yesterday.
Ugh really? And usually my side is more expensive than your side so guess I'll have to watch out for that. I was out today but I didn't even pay attention to the gas pumps but I probably should have.

Use GasBuddy. Very helpful when we negotiated the 10 hour drive from Miami to Atlanta in a smooth 24 hours during the panic Hurricane Irma evacuation.

GasBuddy is only as good as driver input, so be sure to enter current info after each fillup.

Well...if I had to CHOOSE...

We're good in Miami from what I saw on a short ride, tho. And as luck would have it, DW and I both just filled up on Sunday and haven't driven much. I also stocked up on REAL essentials at Costco on Friday, LOL!
We're currently living in South-Central Florida & it's business as usual here too.

I’m annoyed. I went past my gas station (in Virginia) at 5:30 and gas was 2.79. When I drove back by it at 7:30 the price was 3.29. Price gouging at its finest.

I live in Virginia too. My car was 3/4 full but I just went out at 10:30 pm to fill it the rest of the way up. It was 2.85 a gallon at my station and 3.00 at the station across the street. These were small local stations. All the big ones like Kroger and Costco have no gas. We leave for DD’s college graduation 3.5 hours away on Thursday. Right now her college town is pretty much out of gas. I hope they get the pipeline fixed and the stations replenished by the weekend, so we can get home on Sunday!!!

DH drove to 4 different stations this afternoon to fill up. He was almost on empty and needs to drive to Philly tomorrow to pick up his mom and bring her to Va for DD’s graduation. He finally found gas and has enough to get to Philly, but he’s really worried about finding enough gas to get back to Va. I suggested that with this gas shortage we put his mom on the train instead of driving to get her, but he got all pissy. His dad died in early March, and he was worried about his mom driving by herself. He’s being a good and thoughtful son, but I’m not sure why he thinks she’s incapable of riding the train by herself.

The deal is that this is completely screwing up the model for how fuel is distributed. When there's a fuel delivery contract, it's usually company A selling this amount of fuel to its customer, and they'll then pay a pipeline company like Colonial to deliver an equivalent amount of "fungible" fuel and also serve as the distribution point for the truck that picks up the fuel and delivers it to the gas station. Some fuel is available at spot prices. But the fuel may not (and probably is not) the same fuel that the refiner delivers to the pipeline company. The pipeline company doesn't necessarily move the fuel long distances. It just needs to make sure that enough fuel of the proper standard is available for delivery at specific fuel terminals.

This is probably not going to mess too much with fuel supply at a location near a refinery that isn't reliant on the Colonial Pipeline for crude oil deliveries. Refineries in New Jersey seem to be supplied by sea tankers and rail tankers. For example, this one is really close to NYC:

Maryland seems normal. A few days ago gas jumped 10 cents but that was our last increase. Went in gas buddy just now and all looks normal. Just checked our news and Gov says to proceed normally with things as we have a good gas supply. I will say that I texted my dd at college last night and told her to fill her tank. She has a part time job that she drives to and I didn’t want her having any issues.
