Is your state running out of gas?

They can generally run these pipes manually, but it's kind of like our public transit system when they have to do that due to computer system problems. They simply slow down to a crawl because so much of the logistics are automated.
I'm interested to read exactly what happened.

A lot of the equipment used typically has no Internet access. Presumably, they infected the command & control software, which typically runs on PCs & laptops.

The price might still be affected by panic demand. The other issue is that there's only limited storage near refineries. At a certain point they might need to reduce output because there's no place to store it. And perhaps reduce deliveries of crude oil, even if it comes from a different pipeline or by ship. This is a huge logistics nightmare.

Dh got gas today because he needed it. It was up to 2.57, about .18 more since the weekend.

Don't know about the logistics. A state official was on the tv earlier saying our state would be okay until the breach is fixed. No reason right now not to take him at his word. We shall see.

We are headed from Texas to Florida soon. How do things look between here and there, gasoline-wise?
We are driving from Atlanta on Friday. Gas is scarce here. Demand in GA and FL was up 40% from a week ago. Everyone is topping off, leading to gas shortages all over.

We are thinking about cancelling. We don't want to get 3/4 of the way there only to run out of gas.

Along I 10 in Mississippi, people are panic buying but, our supply comes from local refineries. Our officials say not to panic buy or worry.
(See my other posts in this thread.)

Yeah. Some of the speculation is that it might have been something from a USB flash drive or other potential vulnerability. There was also word about how some data was accessed, but it's unclear how that would be transmitted without internet access.

Colonial Pipeline probably isn't needed to move crude or fuel to be used within a state (they probably have local pipelines), but it's going to be crazy dealing with such a sudden shift on the demand side. I remember last year, crude oil futures were selling at negative prices just in order to get them moving since it was hard to shut down certain oil wells and demand was poor. Anyone taking delivery would have to find some way of storing it.

I'm just saying this is really going to mess up a lot of refineries that ship fuel using the pipeline. Refineries are concentrated in the gulf coast closer to crude oil sources and most of their customers are on the eastern seaboard. This pipeline is critical to the petroleum economy.

Another Georgian here, we haven't been near a gas station in a few days to see so not sure how it is in our area. There is a 85 exit about 9 miles from us that has a number of gas stations like most of the exits do and a distribution center about 9 miles the other way so we should be o.k. I bought gas a week ago so I'm good to go for 2 or 3 weeks since I only go to work one day a week. If I have to I can work from home. Hubby's truck runs on diesel so he is probably o.k.

NC and it's bad here even in my rural area. I wasn't paying attention on my drive home this afternoon (to my fuel gauge) so I hope I have enough to get through the week in my car and my truck. Grrrr.

Things should be back to normal by next week, but it doesn't help those planning to drive to WDW this week.

They learned well during the great TP panic of 2020.
Well...if I had to CHOOSE...

We're good in Miami from what I saw on a short ride, tho. And as luck would have it, DW and I both just filled up on Sunday and haven't driven much. I also stocked up on REAL essentials at Costco on Friday, LOL!

It's the toilet paper frenzy from last year all over again.

There was no shortage until the panic buying started. Just like now. There's a shortage because of all the people panic buying because they're afraid there might be a shortage.

There might very well be real shortages if Colonial's pipes don't start moving again soon. However, there's panic buying all over, since very few people really understand where their fuel comes from and how it's delivered from the refinery.

First I’m hearing about this. Northern Delaware.

I filled up this morning, no lines, normal prices. It should last me over two weeks.

The last time I couldn't find gas in GA I went to Costco, and they ended up having gas.

You're not going to have any problems. Don't believe fuel supplies there depend on it.

Well, we are in a fun position.
We have to drive to FL tomorrow - Maryland down 95. Planning on spending the night wherever .... leaving the office around 10:30 AM.
Car holds 425 gallons, I filled up this evening just to have that chore done - one less thing to worry about tomorrow.
Going down to help a family member post surgery, so there is no putting it off, although we have a day or two leeway.
Going to with a good attitude because - well, what else can we do at this point?

Can you please post what 95 looks like (gas availabilty)? We are supposed to drive down on Fri from NC. Of course I am freaking out. Hope your relative recovers quickly!
