Sorry to hear that you lead such a sheltered life, do you sanitize the bubble you live in each day? Honestly nature has it's place in our world too and perhaps you need to realize that, everywhere you sit there may have been a dirty diaper upon it before you, someone may have changed their kids diapers on your bedspread.......I for one love the wildlife at the WL and wouldn't want it to change.

I don't think the OP has led a "sheltered life"......I have never swam in a lake and I never will. It's a personal choice and it doesnt mean that my life is sheltered. It kills me when I hear someone go on and on about how much they "love wildlife" but let a bear go sniffing around your back door you want to string it up.

You may want to reconsider your choice in hotels......The WL has more wildlife around it than just ducks, there are deer and turkey on the nature trail that leads to the petting zoo at the campground (MORE ANIMALS!!) and I have even seen a raccoon looking in the doorway at the WL.......I guess Disney can not all be fantasy.......
?

Honestly, if you really want to stay away from the real ducks who man wander in a Disney pool then maybe you should choose an All Star resort since the All Stars are not near a lake or pond real Ducks are not attracted to them.
Just Donald but since you enjoy the characters I am sure he would be welcome.

Donald is one of those pool hopping ducks too, don't be fooled by the hat and tie.

I find this thread quite amusing and in honesty I can see a bit of the OP's issue if the bird flu were in this country. I'm a duck lover though, let 'em swim so long as they don't bite!

In Florida my biggest fear is 'gaters. A duck or two swimmingin the pool is a good sign that no large reptile has decided to call the swimming hole his own... a few feathers left floating on the surface however... well... you get the idea.

Bird flu, as mentioned above, is not an issue at all. Chances are it will be bird handlers that will serve as the 'canary in the coal mine' on this issue too. Not some random tourist at a WDW resort that sees a bird, but someone who handles 1000s in a day. Having said that, there is no bird flu here, no need to worry about the impossible. I'd venture forth that you are equally likely to come into contact with ebola or something equally as awful as you are bird flu in Florida. Doesn't mean it was a dumb question though, so much media coverage about this in an attempt to build awareness (or maybe some other morbid reason, ie: easier to report deaths somewhere then come up with something interesting that requires research) has lead to a touch of hysteria probably.

I have seen the pool at WL closed down at least three times because of human poop, but never because of ducks. I would think dirty and sweaty human bodies, plus the pee in the pool, would be more of a turn-off than water proof ducks.

Amen to that!! I also think you need to worry more about the hot tub/spa then the pool! My friend had surgery recently to cut out an infection on her leg. Her doctor believes she got it from a small shaving cut then using the hot tub/spa at her gym. Apparently, spas are a breeding ground for all sort of nasties!!! :scared1:

I'd worry more about things like that then ducks taking a swim!! I'd rather swim with some cute ducks then boil in a pot of festering germs!! :crazy2:

I'm not sure it is an issue about being a snob, I think that there are health issues to be concerned with. There is a virus out there amongst the bird community called Bird Flu. And while I do understand that we have not had any cases of it reported in the US, I would hate to see the first case come in WDW. I tend to agree with OP, I think that swimming in the pool with ducks is a bit on the gross side as well. When someone is paying for a hotel they have the right to expect that they will swim in a clean and healthy pool.

While it IS true that there has to be a first case in this country, it has been well researched that the bird flu will enter from the north/west of the country (Alaska, Washington State.....) So, basically Florida is about as far from the "threat area" as humanly possible. So, atleast dont worry about that. (I would worry about swimming near babies!)

The answers regarding pool hopping ducks are funny. Thank you! For the other, less tolerant among you, (and see, you think *I* am intolerant....well so are you in another way!) no, I HAVEN'T gone swimming in lakes and oceans. I am landlocked as far as oceans go and my vacations are spent at Disney, not the ocean. I have no desire to swim in a lake and there's nothing wrong with that preference. Therefore it makes sense that I would have issues with ducks in a pool that is supposed to be clean and healthy for PEOPLE. Yes, I do think they should do something to keep the ducks out! I remember waaaay back in the mid eighties when the Crystal Palace was always swarming with birds inside....ugh, that was gross, too. So no, I don't want to commune with nature and I was merely wanting to confirm or disprove something that to ME, is a concern. And I agree wholeheartedly about the humans, especially those in diapers, who can leave the pool unsanitary, as well. However, I DO realize I can't expect Disney to keep out the paying guests!! Ducks are another matter....
I wasn't trying to be intolerant of you was just pointing out reality. I do hope that you don't spend to much time then thinking about the water you drink or bathe in. Seriously, I would be much more concerned about the people using the pool. Did they shower first? Ever been in a washroom and see people leave without washing their hands? Are there little ones or possibly adults that didn't control their bladder? That is why at every public pool you test, test, test the water. It's not just the ducks that we should worry about.

A few years ago we got to witness 4 unruly ducklings "running" from their mother. They jumped in the pool, she chased them (for at least 30 minutes), and then, after catching them, I guess she proptly busted their fuzzy little butts (she was pretty mad, after all). THEN, just a few minutes later, we witnesses a "crime of nature" while sitting outside and eating our breakfast. A giant bird, and careful calculation I'm sure, swooped down and stole a GIANT muffin from a man's plate. It was the funniest thing I have ever seen, with the exception of his reaction. He went and tattled on the bird, as if someone could do something about it. I think they would have given him another muffin considering what happened, but he just wanted revenge. We laughed so hard I dont even remember if we ate or not.

I dont see the wildlife as nearly as big of a threat as the multitudes of children that leave the restrooms without washing their hands, wipe snot on the handrails, and leave presents in the pool. That can truly be dangerous. Also, I got a terrible infection in my toe last year while at WDW from a pedicure I had a few days before. I no longer let them dig around my nails because I dont trust that their tools are clean.

Dont worry about the ducks. People are a lot nastier. ;)

Remember, the WDW property is huge and part of it is a wildlife preserve. I find the wildlife around WDW charming and part of the magic.

If ducks in the WL pool put you out, I definitely recommend sitting at a covered table if you ever eat at Flame Tree BBQ.

This OP can't be serious how is Disney realistically supposed to keep the ducks out????

If you don't like wildlife don't swim in the pools. There is so much bromine or chlorine in these pools you are safe from most bacteria...

This guy was in the Pop Bowling pool during my stay in March

I'd also advise people to avoid the MK and the dive-bombing birds who steal your food and leave their calling card on your person and your clothing.

SORRY.........but if there was a bear sniffing around my back door I wouldn't want to string it up.......I have learned that God put all of us on this earth and to coexist, I respect all living creatures including the human ones, it is usually the human ones that are intruding on the animals terrain in the first place, I just think that if someone is so afraid of ducks in a pool they probably shouldn't look under a microscope to see what is in the water that they drink.

I do LOVE wildlife, and the area of NJ where I live, as well as my inlaws, we have black bears. We don't expect the bears to be "strung-up", but we do expect people who CHOOSE to live in the suburbs/country to be knowledgeable about the wildlife. I've seen bears in my inlaws backyard several times, and it doesn't freak me out. I am cognizant of the fact that we live where they live, and I'm alert. I know what to do if I encounter a bear. People keep populating areas where wildlife once lived, and they just expect the wildlife to disappear. It's all about educating yourself and your family so that if you are in a situation with a bear you know the proper way to respond. The bears are actually far more afraid of us, than we are of them.

As far as the ducks go, if the OP is concerned about ducks in the pools, than maybe the answer is stay in a hotel that has an indoor pool.

All joking aside and some of it was done in a good nature, pun on words there.

If you truly are going to be upset about ducks in the pool at WL, you are going to have a hard time enjoying your Disney World trip. Nature and wildlife are everywhere. Ducks in the pools, and the occassional snake and frog. Alligators in the waterways and lake. Lizards, owls, turkey, hawks, bunnies, just to name a few.

And of course the state bug, the lovely Palmetto Bug.

And those that wondered about the ducks pool hopping, I believe they are DVC (Ducks Vacation Club. ;)

But the ducks are their as paying guests. Their Uncld Donald and Aunt Daisy's are webbing the bill. So Disney cannot make them leave. :rotfl2:

This thread is quacking me up!!!

Next time I'm at Disney, I'll be on the lookout for pool hopping ducks! :magnify: :lmao: :lmao:
