I've never heard of having peanut butter sandwiches with chili. It seems like grilled cheese might make more sense, but I've never heard of that either.
Speaking of strange combinations, I have to say that after seeing a Brady Bunch episode, I always eat pork chops with applesauce. <<<<said in my best Peter Brady accent.
When I was working for a previous employer, every Halloween we had a "Witch's Brew" contest (it was a chili contest). They always send out an email asking who was going to bring the peanut butter sandwiches. The first year I was like "wha?" and asked why someone would do that? I was called crazy by more than a few people who just said "that's what you eat with chili, duh."
Since I was the token vegetarian, I offered to bring them every year after that.
And they actually dunk the sandwiches in the chili.. and some want jelly on their PB sandwich and they dunk it, too...
Another Indiana girl here. No one in my family would ever consider eating chili without a peanut butter sandwich or peanut butter on crackers! It is a must have. Never knew this was a regional thing.
I grew up in Nebraska. We always had cinnamon rolls with our chili! In the school cafeteria and at home. I moved away 25 years ago, and I sometimes serve them together, but not always. I have Facebook friends that still live there. They post photos of the chili cinnamon roll combo!
No beans in the chili around here and Frito Pie is a staple at school and at the football game.
My DH's family eats dill pickles and raw onions with Vegetable Beef Soup, served up with corn bread. I thought that was pretty weird 30 years ago,(not the cornbread, lol) but now can't eat the soup without them.
I made a big pot of chili tonight. Picked up a bag of Fritos to go with it. It's not quite as much fun when you pile it in a bowl. The school lunch ladies were pros at snipping the bag open and ladling in the chili.
Mmm. That was my favorite school lunch. Ours was PB and honey sandwich though. Added just the right amount of sweetness to offset the spiciness of the chili.
I think it is a preference thing. Peanut butter w/chili is totally normal... not my thing. (Yes I like peanut butter just fine), but I prefer the pimento cheese w/chili idea better.
Yum. Yes we used to have it all the time in elementary school (in GA). Sometimes with honey mixed in the peanut butter. It was one of the best things they served. I make a peanut butter sandwich almost every time I have chili. I thought it was a common side to have with your chili but I guess Im just weird.
In the two years that I lived in Indiana I missed the chili and peanutbutter thing--I've never heard of that combo until this thread.
It sounds awful to me(sorry)
I grew up with frito pie both in teh bag or a bowl if at home. I've never seen anyone put relish or mustard on (also sounds awful to me)--just cheese and sometimes jalapenos.
I have also seen chili regularly served with cornbread (which is what I tend to do) or crackers or even sour dough rolls. I just can't imagine it with peanut butter. That's an interesting little cultural culinary tidbit though.
