happening around the last part of August in Florida? We are planning a trip to Disney and was wondering how the weather tends to be at that time :) . Thanks!

Hey Disneyorl!
Unfortunately, August is prime hurricane time down here in Florida! However, it's basically hit or miss. I would just stay tuned to the weather channel before you come down, and be aware of the weather while you are here. You might want to check into how Disney does refunds for hotels and tickets if the parks are closed.

A good thing about late August, though..most of the Florida kids are back in school- and it's too early in the year for field trips! Even with a little rain, that's something to be happy about! :teeth: Have fun!

Here in Maryland, kids go back to school the Monday before Labor Day.

I remember that for several years in a row I was discussing hurricanes with my 2nd graders during the first week of school, due to what was going on in the south somewhere.

I personally, would never plan a trip then...too risky & my kids would be soooo disappointed. Me even more so.

I think it is important to remember that Orlando is NOT on the coast. A couple of summers ago they were pelted by a couple of hurricanes that cut across the state, but even then the people who were at WDW were safe. The parks were closed temporarily, but it was nothing catastrophic like what happened in New Orleans. Disney did their best to help folks who couldn't get a flight out, ect. People who live on the coasts often go INTO Orlando when a storm hits. While I think it would be safer to go at another time, I would not spend a lot of time worrying about a hurricane that might hit. Last summer Orlando got nothing, all of the big storms hit more west (poor Louisiana, Mississippi, Texas coast, ect.) And yes, schools in the south generally go back earlier in August and get out earlier, in May. It will be HOT, that is a guarantee, and you will get rain most likely.

Hi All! :)

Thanks so much for your input with this topic. I really appreciate it! I normally wouldn't pick this time to go (in late August) but I am at the mercy of the radio station whom is sponsoring this trip. Thanks again! pixiedust:

We stayed at All Star Movies Sept. 2004 when a Hurricane hit. The parks had closed early and we were stuck in our room for less than a day. The food court was closed for most of the day. My sister and I had adjoining rooms with 5 kids ages 6 and under. We had alot of entertaining to do, but between souvoneirs and television, we were able to get through it without any probelms. When the storm calmed down we went for a walk to view the damage. It is a shame to stay in your room when you wish you could be out enjoying the parks, but we didn't let it damper our vacation. The kids weren't bothered by it. We live in New England where the weather is unpredicatable so I guess we are just used to adjusting to crazy weather!

We've been going down to WDW since 1977 and in over 30 some visits never gave a hurricane a thought or trip insurance. We've been there in Feb, March, June August, September, October, November and December. This past October, we experienced our first hurricane. It was predicted at the end of our stay, we were at the Poly but Amtrak shut down 2 days earlier due to the storm. We transferred to the Pop after our 10 nights at the Poly to ride out the storm since no one knew how much damage the storm would do or when Amtrak was going to operate again.

We spent 3 nights at Pop, storm wasn't that bad, Wilma, but parks closed for 1/2 day, some debris but the temps dropped like 30 degrees. Amtrak took that long to start up but only going north and only from Orlando, we always get off in Kissimmee so we live in the North and we happy leaving.

It was a very strange hurricane year for Florida but I'm planning on an August or September trip and gonna see what the hurricane season dishes out.

Like they said Orlando is not on the cost. We go down ever Aug and Sept. we did have our plane delayed( by us) becaus eof hurrican Jean. when we got there there was some debree in the pools thats all! :duck:

Gotta tell you when the hurricanes were coming to us the last couple of years we went to WDW to escape them. Inland they get rain and wind if the path is just right but nothing like us down here on the coast of So. Fla. We feel much safer going to Orlando. Last year we got three extra trips to see Mickey thanks to the huricanes so I guess there is a benefit??? WDW staff has always gone out of their way to be helpful and supportive during this time. It is hard even for Mother nature to ruin a WDW vacation.

Hurricanes and Orlando; here are my suggestions. We are in an increased hurricane activity cycle so the chances of Orlando being affected by one or two or even three is greatly increasing.

Are you in great danger in Orlando, probably not.

However you do need to realize they can be terribly inconvenient to your vacation. You need to realize parks could close early and not open the next day. You could be stuck at your resort for long periods of time and even to your room. You could be stuck in Orlando and not be able to get back home and to work. Your flight into Orlando could be delayed. If these types of things are something you can't deal with either emotionally or financially I would suggest coming at another time.

I have been at Disney during 3 hurricanes and was amazed at how angry guests were at Disney for the inconvenience. It was not a pretty sight.

We went to Disney World in Aug. 2004. Our plane was supposed to leave Philadelphia at 6:30 a.m. that Sunday morning. Hurricane Charlie had hit Florida but it missed us here in PA and we figured we were in the clear. Got to the airport and they told us flight was cancelled (due to damage at US Airways terminal in Orlando). They said we could fly out Tuesday or Wednesday. Didn't have trip insurance so missing half our vacation wasn't an option. DH and I looked at each other and told the kids to get in the car. It was 18 hours exactly till we arrived and after the initial shock the kids were great about it. When we drove thru the Walt Disney World arch we all cheered.
We had called WL that morning and explained the dilema and told them we'd be there, but late. To our surprise, they gave us a great "woods view" room that overlooked Bay Lake. It has become our most memorable trip ever and once we got to Disney the magic began.
Originally we said we'd never go back in August..but we're now going back this August because we couldn't resist the Dolphin for $129/night.
