Sorry--I just can't see a white person saying "Let's build a white city......"

From cnn.com::

Mayor Ray Nagin on Monday called for the rebuilding of a "chocolate New Orleans" that maintains the city's black majority, saying, "You can't have New Orleans no other way."

"I don't care what people are saying Uptown or wherever they are. This city will be chocolate at the end of the day," Nagin said in a Martin Luther King Jr. Day speech. "This city will be a majority African-American city. It's the way God wants it to be."

Uptown is a reference to a mostly white part of the city.

Pressed later to explain his comments, Nagin, who is black, told CNN affiliate WDSU-TV that he was referring to creation of a racially diverse city in the wake of Hurricane Katrina, insisting that his remarks were not divisive.

"How do you make chocolate? You take dark chocolate, you mix it with white milk, and it becomes a delicious drink. That is the chocolate I am talking about," he said.

"New Orleans was a chocolate city before Katrina. It is going to be a chocolate city after. How is that divisive? It is white and black working together, coming together and making something special."

Before Hurricane Katrina inundated the city with floodwaters in August, forcing its residents to evacuate, about two-thirds of New Orleans' population of 485,000 was black.

However, the worst of the flooding was in mostly black areas that remain largely uninhabitable, while residents in mostly white areas that were less badly damaged have been able to return home -- prompting speculation that the much-smaller city could end up with a white majority if large numbers of black evacuees do not return.

Black residents and political leaders have complained about the slow pace of recovery in mostly black areas compared to mostly white areas such as Uptown and the French Quarter, where services have been restored and life has returned to a semblance of normal.

In his speech, Nagin also said "God is mad at America," in part because he does not approve "of us being in Iraq under false pretenses."

"He is sending hurricane after hurricane after hurricane, and it is destroying and putting stress on this country," Nagin said.

He said God is "upset at black America also."

"We are not taking care of ourselves. We are not taking care of our women, and we are not taking care of our children when you have a community where 70 percent of its children are being born to one parent."

Nagin, first elected in 2002, had been due to come up for re-election next month. However, state officials postponed the city election until April because of the disruptions caused by Katrina.

.

No - youre right, you wouldnt see it.

Many "chocolate" references..... maybe he was hungry. :confused3

Yes, Ray Nagin is a racist, but you will never see any media source call him on it as it is not PC to question anybody or anything of color.

So they are talking about us in the rest of the country? I just posted this about 15 minutes ago:

Nagin had a lot of good things to say in his speech, but I think he lost it a bit and that is what the nation is focusing on. He is of course backpedaling and trying to say he didn't mean it the way people are taking it, but I don't believe him. You can't be a public figure and say something like that and not expect it to blow up in your face. We are faced with some major problems with our leadership. There is currently a petition to have our governor recalled.

For those who would like to hear the complete speech and not snipits from Fox News or CNN, you can go here and listen to it uncut.

Not white but a milky city. That would go well with chocolate.

And yes Nagin is a racist.

Nagin has gone way 'round the bend and needs an intervention. Yes, this was a racist comment.

He sounds like he's "gone off the deep end" ::yes::

It's being discussed on local talk radio right now. Even black callers are saying it was a rascist comment. It is almost unbelievable he said this. I just hope it does not affect federal recovery effort funds.

The people of New Orleans need major assistance. I was in New Orleans again over the weekend, and I was in shock. Reports seemed to indicate things were improving, maybe true in the quarter, and uptown. Driving throughout the area east of the the 17th street canal, where our friends and family lost their homes was shocking. The very large area (amny square miles) we drove through was a ghost town. It really looks like a nuclear bomb went off with the black gunk covering everying, all formerly evergreen stuff dead as a doornail. Even going uptown which was largely spared the flooding (still a lot of wind damage) about half the traffic lights are still not operational.

Nagin apparently tried to explain himself in an interview later, after that speech. Just made it worse. He needs to speak for all citizens, especially now. He has the nation's attention, I just hope everyone focuses on the needs and not on the politics.

What an idiot :confused3 And now he is New Orleans' personal condiut for knowing God's Will? God is much smarter than that.

Definitely a racist comment. I also love how he's speaking on behalf of God.

If not rascist then extremely insensitive (another way of saying stupid). Can you imagine what would have happened if the white Governor of Louisiana would have suggested a white city?

But... He is black, so it's OK, I guess.

Stupid is as stupid does -- Forrest Gump

Things HAVE to improve quickly Uptown. If New Orleans doesn't get the tourists back, nothing will ever get better. Besides most of those areas didn't flood and suffered little damage to start with.

Nagin needs a vacation or something.

I remember parts of the Homestead area still looking like what you describe over a year after Andrew. Some of those areas never came back and I am sad to say I don't expect any different for parts of NO or the Gulf Coast.

As to Nagin yes he is a racist and IMO has a screw loose. How is what he is saying about God's intent any different than those who said NO got hit because of their sins. Those people were taken to the woodshed by the national media, public etc....why should this man get a free pass?

I would say so.
This comment really bugs me

Nagin needs a vacation or something.

Before the tourists come back, they better get more restaurants operating more hours. We traveled all over the place Saturday afternoon trying to find one open.

All the ones we tried were either open limited hours, say 12 to 3 pm, then 5 to 8 pm, or simply closed til Monday. We finally settled for New Orleans seafood and hamburger (limited menu) after going to at least six restaurants.
To be fair, it is improved since the early days when nothing was open.

New Orleans cuisine is one of the main drawing cards for tourists. Not sure I would visit the city until things improve. Sorry, Mr. Nagin.

Ray Nagin's remarks were very unfortunate.

A white college student was asked about Nagin's comments, and said that she had hoped to stay in New Orleans after her graduation, but now wondered how welcome she would be.

Although I do think the comment was a little off the mark. I think New Orleans captured an amazing cultural, religious and historical mix of Americans of whom happen to be a majority black. I for one (as white as they come) would really hate to see that piece of America lost, those traditions, cajun cultures, music, etc. To rebuild without the people that made it that special place in the first place would be an absolute shame.
