Is Nassau that bad!? No sugarcoating!

On our second visit we arrived the morning of New Years Day. I had done some research on the town and found out that there was a major event called "Junkanoo" that happened New Year's Day. If you went a few streets in from the port you found the most amazing festive atmosphere with several huge parades going on at once with live bands, dancers in beautiful elaborate costumes and incredible homemade floats. There were hardly any tourists there despite the three huge cruise ships in town. I couldn't believe that thousands of people were so scared to get off the ship that they missed out on this amazing spectacle happening a few minutes walk away. We agreed that it was one of the highlights of our trip. I put a short clip of the "real Nassau" on my blog.

Thanks for your post! We are on the Wonder 12/28 cruise out of Galveston and we will be in Nassau on New Year's Day (in 3 weeks!!!) I understand the Junkanoo parades start around 2 or 3 am and can run until lunch time. We look forward to checking it out.

Blue Lagoon was AWESOME and when we went on the Dream in 2011, it was part of the arranged excursions with Disney. We met as a group in the morning got on a boat as a group that took us to Blue Lagoon and spent a BEAUTIFUL FUN day there; would definitely do it again if it is a Disney Excursion.:thumbsup2 Our family also got off the ship in Nassau for a brief time and would NOT do it again; felt unsafe.:scared1::eek:

This is great to hear as we've booked the Blue Lagoon beach day excursion (I've heard really good things about the Dolphin Encounter but its above our budget). I keep hearing bad things about Nassau and so we went with Blue Lagoon as it's separate from the local Nassau area and the beach looks really nice. Do you think it's still worth it for just a 4hr excursion?

Wow, DCL must have shortened it as I remember(2011 summer cruise) getting back to the ship about 4PM..Think that the ferry departed Blue Lagoon at 3. Yes, definitely a fun way to spend a half day! Inflatables set up on beautiful beach/water! Really enjoyed it; HAVE FUN!:goodvibes:thumbsup2

Sorry I didn't specify, but it's not actually a Disney cruise. But I'll often read these boards since we're cruising with kids like a lot on here (and we've been on the Magic before so I get a lot of the posts) :-)
