Is it wrong to "out" the trolls?

I have seen a couple of posts like this and I dont want to sound stupid but what do you mean by "troll"? :confused3

In general a troll is:
Someone who makes irrelevant posts
Posts about something that's been posted 100's of times before
Posts to gain attention for attention's sake
Spams the board with OT things (ie bots)
Is a miscreant hell bent on making trouble.

I never knew there were so many rules. I think lots of people post about stuff that may have been posted before just because things come up again or maybe you werent part of the original discussion.
I dont know what an OT or a bot is?
Who decides what is irrelevant?
I logon everyday and query for all new posts and then look for anything of interest. If I feel moved to respond I write and if I dont I just read. It seems to me a lot of what I read is pretty irrelevant but I come on the boards to relax so I dont care if its all fluff. I dont get why people seem to bicker so much lately though.
Oh well, Thanks for explaing.
The Dis and Intercot are my first attempts at discussion boards and I dont know all the abbreviations and road rules.

First off, A bot is a scripted program that will infiltrate a board for the purpose of sending spam messages to it. Basically a person would sign up for an account here and then set the bot loose, the bot would then post messages of total garbage.

OT is off topic, again basically garbage, nothing that anyone is really interested in. Say if you came on here and wanted to talk about.. OMG did you see that PIRATES (a porn Movie) Was filmed in FLORIDA??? that'd be pretty spammy, and pretty trolly, as it really has nothing to do with the community at large other than being in florida. :)

A lot of the topics are duplicated, yes. But when someone posts about "OMG did you know that people have DIED at DISNEY?" (Which has been covered about a bajillion times) that's trollish behaviour.

If you ask me, people are bickering so much because they're getting spring fever. Those up north have been cooped up for so long they're getting anxious to be released to the wilds of the land. With the weather beginning to warm, they're feeling freedom beging to chaffe. *grin* It happens in cycles. It'll die down, and it'll start back up, like the wheel of life. You do have to take everything with a grain of salt.

The general rule of thumb is this, if you see something that's interesting, jump in, have fun. But remember there are people behind the tags here. Try to live by the golden rule, Do unto others as you would have them do unto you. I think we'd all get along better that way.

I get nervous when I see people who feel the need to "authenticate" and police people online. Yes there are some people out there, and I have been badly burned by some, who are bad apples. In the end I have learned to trust my first instincts about posters here and the other places I hang and I have been better off. If someone feels odd to you or off then don't talk to them. I worry about people getting burned by a sting who are innocent. Similar names etc.

Thanks for the info.I do try to treat people on the board as I would in "real" life.

There has seemed to be a lot of bickering here lately, don't let that scare you off. I have been here a while, still ask questions that have been asked before, and still have to look up some of the abbreviations. Don't let it get to you, overall this is a good community with lots of great people.

what if it is someone who gets on here that does not know, or has just found out??? do you just ponce on them or point to a thread? I know in real life some that would react like that because they have herd it for the first time.

Last week there was someone who had 3 posts to their name, posted this thread and someone who'd been here for ages jumped all over them. I'm merely using that as an example.

cool, just asking, people are funny, I see some that get pounced on that deserve it, and some that dont, I have gotten offlines and e-mails from posters that didnt have a clue that I was pipcking at friends, I have family that work at WDW and have herd some stories, I have been an EMT in 3 states and work Fire and Rescue now, some people just dont get that things happen, everywhere, everything from passing out, heart attacks, and even giving birth, but it is nice to see someone give a new poster clues, there are really nice people on here that are fun to chat with, and some....well.... just asking and thanks for the reply :thumbsup2

No worries. You're right, some people are funny as to how they take information in. The thing about the internet is you don't have a clue how the tone was meant. You don't know if it was Snarky or if it was sweet, because you lose the inflection.

You do realize, when you're a troll in the Norway pavillion, people always feel the urge to put their fingers up your nose. Downside of THAT job, IMO

Suzanne

Or, stand over your nose for photos!! :lmao: The last time we were in Norway, we found the troll "hiding" behind some sweaters...he must've known my stepdad was coming....I shudder to think how many crotches that troll has "known".

PAW, how do you know people who were posting nicely with him did it because they thought he was mentally disabled? I didn't notice a lot of people saying that here.

Actually, when I questioned him on a issue, I was promptly sent 3 pm's from people telling me that he was mentally challenged, and that was why it wasn't nice to question him, and why people talked so syrupy to him.

So, whether he made these claims about himself or not, there were several people willing to go out of their way to "protect" him. And my comment wasn't even viscious!

Wow! I just noticed how many posts you have. That must have taken years!
I dont let it scare me off. A few weeks back there was a computer glitch and my query for new posts kept bringing up old posts.Because they were new to me I didnt realize they were "old". People started asking if the people who brought the posts back up (especially one re:spanking) were trolls. In our area a troll is a jerk (or a really ugly person) so I dodnt have a clue what they were talking about. I think 99.9% of people here are wicked nice but there are some nasties out there! Nice meetin ya! :thumbsup2

Wow, I'm reading this thread and all I can say is Where the heck have I been? :confused3 I'm on this board daily and I haven't noticed any troll posings? Guess I just stick to the happy threads ;)

I don't have a problem with anyone outing a troll. It is a reminder that the internet is not a private and anonymous place. If you are posting information somewhere, you need to be careful as it could come back to haunt you.

Actually, I was relieved to find out he only had a hidden agenda as an animal rights activist....he was really starting to creep me out. I still think the whole thing is a little weird and it doesn't make sense to me as to how he was "educating" us about animal cruelty. :confused3

I am glad we are having this discussion. I just wanted to jump in and say that I think the DIS is the most well-policed board I partcipate in. Even some other WDW boards are known for how the "regulars" humiliate newbies. Not here -and that's a great thing. I don't notice too much troll activity on here.

Also, I love that on this forum diverse views can be expressed, we can fume at each other, kiss and make up, and then move o n to the next thread -be it a heated discussion or not. I think that is what keeps me coming back here. Maybe TOO often :rolleyes1

And to she who said "Burn the Witch" I need to get $45 for a new keyboard. You made me spit soda out all over mine! Can I get that as pay pal or a cashiers money order? Amscot has them for free... just a helpful hint! :smooth:

Sorry...you read at your own risk...I cannot be held responsible for my rapier wit. :smooth: :smokin:

::yes::

As for that other post about the lady and her two kids, car acciednt, etc. - did that thread get deleted? I remember seeing it (sometime last year?) but didn't really pay much attention (I was still new) - if it's still around (but locked) does anyone have a link?
I think I read the first page - huge outpouring of sympathy and whatnot - but then I didn't bother looking again (I didn't know the person, I was new, etc.).

If anyone knows - send me a PM!

I don't see the correlation to comparing the FC "outing" (which I still don't see how it was such an "outing") to what Deafmedic pulled on her friends (and yes I was one of those people). It's not the same. She built a close relationship to a group of people and the a story was made up about her death.

FC is someone who posts in a manner unlike many other people. I still don't see who or what he was harming. People are really making a stretch in saying he was perverted and a potential child molestor.

Most people have something about them that other people may find strange. For an example, I am very interested in the End Times, and I do a lot of research on the subject. I find it fascinating. There are others who are obsessed with TV shows, sports, Build-A-Bear, etc. If each of us was put under the microscope, what would be found?
