Is Coronavirus affecting your travel plans?

It would be inaccurate to report a death from COVID-19 if the patient was not a confirmed case.
The CDC does this all the time with the flu though.

They use estimates and ranges.

"CDC does not know exactly how many people die from seasonal flu each year." "...CDC and other public health agencies in the United States and other countries use statistical and mathematical models to estimate the annual number of flu-related deaths."---from CDC's website.

From what I've seen and read so far:
The Chinese government was ordering people cremated ASAP, even without family consent.
They don't have enough tests for every sick person.
They aren't doing post mortem testing because of the quick cremations and lack of tests. The test results take days to come back.
The hospitals are so over run they don't have room for everyone who presents with symptoms, so no testing unless they are admitted, if they can get admitted or a test at all.
There is a case for clinical diagnosis with an epidemic like this. If everyone in the house is sick with the same symptoms and one confirmed covid19, it's a pretty good guess the others have it as well.

I'm thinking now that WHO is finally in there, there *should* be more accurate information coming out.

I am not Chinese but my workplace is about 90% Chinese so it’s been interesting to get a little inside perspective as most of their families are back in China.
One co worker says her elderly mom lives alone and hasn’t left the house for over a month.

Also they all confirm through their relatives back home that hundreds of bodies are being cremated because they are overwhelmed with all the bodies.

Interesting article about a Japanese infectious disease expert who boarded the Diamond Princess cruise ship and what he has to say about conditions he found on it. (In video when he talks about PPE = personal protective equipment.)

I always find the Comments as interesting as the article itself. Some good ones for this article. I disagree with this one:

"Quarantine would never have been about preventing virus spread on board ship. The assumption is that everyone there would already be infected . The quarantine was an attempt to prevent transmission to the general public on land."

I don't believe there was any such assumption, and quarantine would be an attempt to protect everyone.

I always book holidays at least 6 months in advance. booked our holiday when this whole thing was just starting never dreaming it would get this bad.
I will be crushed if we can’t go because this year is the most money I ever spent on a vacation, all non refundable and it took me years to save☹️

I hope you don't have to cancel, but I've heard reports of people who have gotten full or partial refunds on travel cancelled due to outbreaks even when it was technically nonrefundable. If it does happen (and hopefully it doesn't), try to call the airline/hotels/travel agencies/etc and see what money you can get back.

I'm in the same boat -- Caribbean cruise and airfare are paid in full for our April trip. All non-refundable. At this point I'm taking a wait and see approach. If the airlines and cruise lines start cancelling on their own, then I guess the decision is made for me. If not, I'll have to make a decision as the trip gets closer about how comfortable I feel taking the trip versus how much $$ I will lose by cancelling. Ugh!!

It might, dh has an international conference in the early fall so if that is cancelled then so are our travel plans.

I have no real travel plans. I booked a Southwest flight (using miles) from DC to MCO for the end of March. Not planning any real Disney time; just need to finally go see my parents' new home in The Villages. I guess I'll be watching for guidelines as the trip gets closer. Since I booked with miles on Southwest, there won't be any loss to me, fortunately. I hate to overreact on stuff like this so I'm taking what the media says kind of with a grain of salt. They can scare me to death over nothing if I let them. But, yeah, I guess putting myself in a vulnerable situation unnecessarily isn't wise. I'll just have to determine if flying or Disney Springs are deemed risky.

We have a cruise booked for May and I am not canceling it. I may decide to drive instead of fly if air travel is deemed too risky but thats about it. I think just like everything else in this day and age - its blown up. I will wait it out.

We have no big travel plans. Disneyland at Thanksgiving and I'll go with my husband to a conference, but this is the year of a new roof and a new deck rather than travel.

A friend of mine is on a cruise right now and they've had to skip to ports because they were not permitted (by the area) to dock and come off the boat out of fears.

Cruise critic forums are mentioning various places in the Caribbean that are currently not permitting docking. It's probably tricky for the decision makers. Are the visitors worth the $$ they spend, or is it just not worth the risk?
If coronavirus spreads in their communities, some folks will have a mild case, others will need ICU care. There are limited #'s of those beds most places. That may be one of the big reasons they are being extra careful and having ships skip their port.

Why would it be awful there?
Why would it be awful to be stuck in a cabin for whatever length of quarantine deemed necessary?
I guess some folks might enjoy the experience.
Most would not.
This ^

I am introvert and could be snowed in for a week or more and be perfectly content. Being locked in a stateroom with recirculated air on a cruise ship for an indefinite period of time? No thanks.
