Is California Grill OK for kids?

We are staying at the CR for the second time. Last time we did not eat at the California Grill on the top of the resort. I never thought it would be age appropriate for my children. I have a DD4, DS7 & DS13. After reading a little on DIS it sounds like it is the WDW restraunt. Can my kids make noise? Is it pretty fancy? I'm not too wooried about cost but I don't want to go there and be stressed about the kids being on their best behavior.

Do you think this would be a good restraunt for kids? My date to start making PS is the 27th of Sept. Any imput would be appreciated!!!!!

We have a very active crew. We have gone several times and indeed have reservations for the day after Thanksgiving at 820pm for the fireworks. We have a DS4, DD8, and DS9. DS9 loves the steak while DD8 eats just enough to get to DESSERT. DS4 does very well. All three have a hard time sitting for longer than 10min. however the wait staff seems to be very good with the young ones. It has a wonderful view of the MK along with the fireworks including the piped in music. I would say go ahead and try. There are plenty of families there. Remember you are at Disney......

The set up of the restaurant is inherently noisy. It has a large, open kitchen and is always full of people. If your kids can handle a meal at a local restaurant on a "not their fastest service" night they should be fine there. The bright side is they have flatbreads that if the kids are super hungry or picky you can order them pizza to get them going. The view is wonderful, if the family can handle waiting some extra time you might ask to be seated in the main dining area with a view instead of in the wine room, where you can almost see EPCOT, but not quite. The view is entertainment enough for most kids.

Is 8:20 or so the best time to eat there to catch the fireworks?

We have eaten as a family at Boma and it was very noisy. It has the open kitchen thing going on too. Is it similiar to that?

You mntioned the wine room.... is that something I can mention while making ressies. I want to be able to see the fireworks.

Thanks a million for your advice!!!!!:(:(:(:(:

If Wishes is at 9, I'd recommend you make your PS for no later than 8..... Assuming you're seated by 8:15 or so, you should have your appetizers out before Wishes and your entrees after (they close the kitchen for a period of time during Wishes). So effectively you'd be eating after 9 - can your kids wait that long? (mine can't!) . As an alternative, you can make a PS for earlier in the evening and come back to view Wishes from there. I believe you need to show your dinner receipt from earlier that night (but you can't go back another day to view from there - just the day you actually dined there). Kids menu was pretty standard and the flatbreads are very good!

Hi We went with my then 3 1/2 year old and almost 5 year old DD's. It was our first night and they were beat but actually did great. Our ressie was for 5:30 and we were there till about 8:00pm. Lots of appetizers! I remember sooo many people with small children. It was a nice place and my children wore little dresses but as an earlier poster put, "you are at Disney." Relax and enjoy it, the food was great! When the kids did get a little restless we had a large group so we walked them to the window. One couple even offered to let them stand in front of their table when the fireworks went off. I thought that was really nice!

Cali Grill is great for kids! They serve goldfish crackers for snacks, they are allowed to color on the paper "tablecloth", the servers are great with kids.

Take the kids, have a wonderful meal and a great time!

I'm so glad that I posted this thread. I never dreamed that CG was kid friendly. In the Birbaum book they make it sound like it's all that and a bag of chips! LOL

I'm going to go for it. Still would love to hear any other comments or advice.

THANKS!!!!!

Don't worry a whole lot about seating. If you get a window table, great. If not, all you need do is go out on the observation deck and watch the show from there. That's what we always do these days--in fact, we don't even request a window table.

Yes, it's fancy, and yes, they should be on their best behavior (not sure why anyone would think to take kids to any restaurant and not have them be on their best behavior...). That said, it's fine to talk and laugh, it's not fine to scream and throw things. It's OK for kids as long as they can act like well mannered children rather than banshees. If they can't sit through a meal at Mc Donalds without acting up or trying to leave the table, then no, this is not the palce for you. But if they are able to sit through a full service meal at home like young ladies and gentlemen, then they'll really enjoy the CG.

What she said - I agree with this 100%

another ditto.

This is not a Chef Mickeys...this is a more upscale restaurant. Yes you are at Disney...but it is a bit more subdude then other restaurants on property...and children, IMO, should behave as such.

I was there in January for my birthday...we had a window table, it was wonderful. One table of kids was very well behaved, another table had the little girl running around and "drawing" on fresh tablecloths (the server had to re-set the entire table after she was done.) Of course nothing was said...but I don't think that was acceptable behavior. JMO.

I don't agree its a "fancy" restaurant. Its one of the noisiest restaurants I've ever been to. It is upscale due to the menu offerings and price list. The food is fabulous, the service excellent and I don't think you should deny yourself a try because of the kids.

If kids can't behave, then they shouldn't be there. Period. While CG isn't a subdued atmosphere like you'd find at Citrico, it is an upscale restaurant, and people dine there expecting an upscale atmosphere, not Mc Donald's playland. It is unreasonable for parents to think that it's acceptable for their children to not be on their best behavior and be disruptive to other patrons. If a parent knows that their children might have issues sitting still and using "inside voices" in a restaurant, it is incredibly selfish of them to dine there anyway, unless they are willing to be prepared to have the food wrapped and leave, immediately, if the children start acting up.

Selfish? Wow, that post really shocks me! :( I don't think it's selfish for people to want to have a nice dinner and take their children, this is Walt Disney World!

We have one very well behaved little 'lady' in our party. She was six the first time we ate at CG, seven the next. She'll be almost nine when we go back. Never thought twice about taking her there, or anywhere else because she knows how to behave in public.

It sounds to me as if you'd rather that CG was a no-children restaurant!

When we ate there last year, there were more babies in that restaurant than I have ever seen at any sit-down restaurant at WDW, including character meals! There was at least one baby at every single table in our half of the restaurant (except our table). So, there was some happy-baby screetching, a lot of laughter, a definite child presence to be felt there. But I don't recall any of the children being badly behaved. They were just being children. Now I realize that is offensive to some people, but anywhere you go in WDW you have to accept that kids are likely going to be there!

I don't know when some folks in this thread have eaten there, maybe later at night. But it really sounds like we're talking about two different restaurants! Each time we've been there, there were lots and lots of children. Once it was just before MNSSHP and there were even kids in costume.

To the OP, please don't let people's posts here put you off at all. Take your kids, (do watch over them, but take them,) and have a wonderful time.

They wouldn't stock the goldfish and crayons to draw with if they didn't plan on having lots of kids here. CG is not Victoria and Alberts, and it's not like it was when it was a nightclub at the "Top of the World." It's not as noisy as Ohana, but it is definitely, at least at the earlier seatings, a family restaurant.

Wow. You never know what you're going to read on these boards.

I am set to make my PS also and selected this. In January, what time would fireworks be? I wrote down 7 for the PS, but if I'm way off, I can change to a better time. This is for MLK Weekend.

My kids loved this place and requested it again for our upcoming trip. My girls each got to pick 2 restaurants and they thought if they both picked CG we would go twice!! NOT.
Anyway, I find it to be a nice dressup place to take the kids without it being stuffy.

Go and enjoy!!

DH and I don't have any kids, but we love vacationing in WDW. We accept that kids are going to be everywhere we go in the parks at the resorts. However, I agree with ducklite about this subject. If your kids aren't going to behave during the meal, you shouldn't take them. Yes, the CG is a noisy restaurant, and yes kids are to be expected as you are in WDW. But when you are paying $50 per person for dinner (at a restaurant that has a dress code they ask you to adhere to when making your PS, although sadly, not everyone complies) I think a certain amout of decorum is also to be expected. I don't expect kids to be silent and bored at dinner, but I do expect them to behave (no screaming or throwing things) and stay in their own chair and not run around the restaurant. CG may be family friendly, but it is far from a counter a service restaurant. Unfortunatly, not all parents are as conscientious as I am sure the people who have answered this thread are, and its those parents that create problems for others.

To the OP, if you think your kids can eat dinner without disturbing other diners, then I say take them, have a great time and enjoy the view! The CG has become one of our favorite WDW restaurants.

Thanks for all the input!!!! I start PSing in just one more day. I'm going to go for it. My kids are fairly easy and have sat through many a function or dinner where they have had to sit still and not disturb others. Sounds like they can get through CG and even enjoy it- no sweat!

One reply that was posted said the CG is not stuffy. That hit the nail on the head! I was wondering if it was a stuffy place. I don't like stuffy even when I'm with just my DH.

There's best behavior and then there is extreme best behavior. I just did not feel like going to CG and feeling loads of pressure to keep my kids perfectly still and quiet. My DD4 and DS7 just sat through the Mahler 8 for two hours. You could literally hear a pin drop it was so quiet. My older DD12 was performing with the Cincinnati Symphony and I wanted my two younger children to see him preform. I was on edge the entire time but we got through it perfectly! It sounds like we will be just fine at CG as long as we can laugh! LOL

I'm so glad you've decided to make the PS and take your family to Cal Grill. My parents and grandparents always took my sister and I to nice restaurants while we were growing up with the expectation that we were to behave like little ladies. It sounds like your younger ones did great at the symphony - why not this restaurant?

The one thing my husband and I noticed on our last WDW trip was that the wait staff at the nicer restaurants all rushed to get food to the kids...for example while mom & dad may have been having a cocktail and appetiser, the kids were eating their main course. This satisfied the kids but then they had to sit while their parents had their main courses and sometimes desert and coffee too. That is when most little one's got really antsy.

I think a better option would have been to find an appetiser option that the kids would like and share, have the main courses come out all at the same time, and then if you are doing desert, have your kids order or share something they like too. Preparing the kids for the "experience" - a longer special meal - is also a good idea.

Cal Grill does have some great table views of the fireworks - but getting one is a gamble at best. The outside viewing is really nice though even if you don't have a MK view at your table.
