Is BW worth the 18 year hit?

One thing to consider is the points per night in the new resorts.

Age is important. I'll be 82 in 2042, so the additional years don't mean much.

Unless your children will want to use.

Depends on if you are buying for a better deal or at a resort that you really enjoy? We bought for the enjoyment.
Except that you are buying "what you see, know and enjoy NOW" with no say on future changes to any given property. Will your heart be torn when they pull out the jetted tub or ceiling fans? Will you be equally happy with potentially downgraded refurbishments down the line? None of us know? For that, I'm glad I own "network points" (7-month) and don't feel any great love for my home resort.

As for the comments in this thread contrasting timeshare ownership w/ marriage -- y'all are too funny. I had a good laugh. Thanks.

You have to start somewhere and our favorite resorts, the views, the theming, is what makes Disney different. Do we like the direction that Disney and DVC is going, no. When things get too bad we will get a divorce.

Or remain married and consider the "open marriage" mentioned earlier in this thread. Skip the divorce and try new rules ... ? ;P

Really like BW and on resale far better deal than BLT. But is it worth it for 18 years less on the lease?

Thanks

What are the pros and cons for you for each resort? Make a list and rate each item.

BWV and BLT are my two favourite resorts, because I like being able to walk to the park. And for myself I'm old enough that the extra 18 years don't make a difference for me.

You could always split your points between the two resorts ;)

In terms of cost, someone else did this spreadsheet a few months ago. Apologies that I didn't save who to credit for it and haven't updated it. The prices have changed a bit (we're paying $110 for BLT but SSR hasn't dropped that much which makes BLT roughly $7.78 on this chart) but if "value" matters I think it's best to put numbers on it. OTOH if "I want to walk back from F&W to my room" matters, at least you know how much that costs :)

There isn't the most complicated analysis of costs, but I think it's a reasonable way to think about it.

DVC Costs Per Year

OTOH if "I want to walk back from F&W to my room" matters, at least you know how much that costs :)

And factor that by points per night - if you manage to snag a BWV standard studio in January, you pay 2 points per night less than a studio at SSR. So you pay $22 a night for it. More like $50 if you end up with a Preferred View.

That $50 a night is going to scale with room type and time of year, but its a better way to look at overall costs than just a per point cost - especially when comparing the high point requirement rooms to the "value" options (do be realistic about your availability of value options - even owning VAKL or BWV is no guarantee of a standard or value room every trip, but OKW and SSR are not expensive on a point basis and count as value options too)

Don't buy thinking your children will use it. My oldest is living in another country and he would rather spend his holidays elsewhere.

Not saying to make the decision based on that but it CAN be factor, doesn't mean it has to. If the don't use it, it could possibly be a revenue source. With points at $1000 each in 2035 (just throwing out there), it could be sold for a profit (again I'm NOT suggesting you buy a timeshare to make money).

Just my personal opinion but the studios at BLT are simply much too small compared to the BWV studios. 18 years or no 18 years, you could not get me to buy into BLT.

Yea but BLT 1bds are amazing ;)

We have both BLT and bwv. We also almost always stay in a 1bd except at the poly.

I have to say, I currently prefer my bwv points more... I'm obsessed with the std rooms point savers!

So somehow we snagged a one bedroom villa at BWV for a last minute weekend coming up. We are paying cash for it, but I'm excited to be trying it. :sunny:

We always book one bedrooms when we stay at our home resort, so I'm looking forward to checking out BWV. We want to add-on at either BCV or BWV at some future point and since we've already stayed at Beach Club, time to try Board Walk!!!

It's really about which resort you prefer, I agree.

The feel and proximity of the two resorts are quite different -- BLT is modernist and near MK; Boardwalk is softer in theme and walks to Epcot. If you want F&W at Boardwalk, being a home resort owner there is practically essential.

I sometimes equate it to marriage: Do you want to be married 18 years longer to someone who is just ok, or live to the fullest for the time you have with your true love?

Ah yes but in this case you can be married to several loves for different reasons......

Do you mind my asking the price point? Was trying to save points for our end of trip in December, and even with AP pass, I'm being quoted $600/night for the poly, and $500/night with bwv studio...

You can usually get 25% off rack rate if you call member services. It's never guaranteed because only certain inventory qualifies for it, but the one or two times I did it I had no problem.

Footnote: This is a guess, but the 25% off is probably for inventory that a BCV owner has traded for a stay at a different DVC resort. That's probably indicitave of the markup charged when traded through BVTC or something like that.
