Is anyone concerned about this??

On the Today Show this morning they stated that the death rate is about 4% but that they also think that is of only the most severe cases. Since they are now questioning people more clearly, they have found that many have mild symptoms and survive. At this point, I wouldn't be too alarmed about it. If I was in your shoes, I would go and enjoy the vacation.

The overall fatality rate for SARS is less than 5%. Well, this is pretty similar to the fatality rate for Influenza and Pnuemonia anyhow.

4% is the number I saw, but of course that's based on limited info. However, the fatality rate for Influenza is not anywhere near 5%, or even 1%. I'm not sure about Pnuemonia, but normally, otherwise healthy people do not contract Pnuemonia very easily.

I just want you to know I didn't throw just any number out there. I have read many studies recently regarding the effectiveness of Flu and Pneumonia vaccines. The death rate each year in the USA is at 3-5%. Annually 20,000 people in this country die from one or the other. In the CDC's statistics over 2000 deaths were reported in NY alone in 2001.

I'm coming with my family (6 of us) in July and yes, I'm concerned. Just like I'm concerned about our flight, drinking water, and losing a child in the park among a million other things. The best thing to do is to be prepared for as much as you can. I don't see anything wrong with sharing concerns with others.
As a matter of fact, I saw a news report on this earlier tonight and they said the CDC is about 90% sure they know that SARS is a new strain of Corona virus that they have never seen before. Diagnosis is the hardest part. Once they can be 100% sure, they'll know what treatment will work. Also, they showed a world map were cases have been reported and you'd be surprised at how many cases have already been reported in the US.

Knowledge is POWER!!!

I am concerned about this but not paniced. But not just at Disney.
My husband is an airline machanic on International flights. He works on and in the planes. They say this is airborn and it stays on surfaces if someone sneezes etc.
So yes I am concerned everyday. Tonight on the news they stated that this virus is in the Caronia (sp?) virus family, that is the common cold family. I told my husband tomorrow I am going to buy a few boxes of the Zinc lozengers that help get rid of the common cold faster. He put up no argument, in fact said it would probably make it easier on him to continue his days without cigarettes. 2 weeks tobacco free!!! I am very proud of him for that.
So hopefully I will have him around for our vacations to disney for many yrs to come....

I told my DH tonight that I'm going to be watching the news on SARS. We have until April 25 to change our plans. We just got back, so war and terrorism didn't keep us away. But my daughter has a habit of touching everything (railings, etc.), and I'm not always able to insure that she washes properly or stays away from people coughing (she'll be 12). If she gets something, we'll get it too. I have a depressed immune system from chemical exposure so this is a worry. Diana
