Just thought I'd post a quick summary of our recent (and, thankfully, only) car insurance claim for anyone curious about the procedure
We've had insurance4carhires' annual insurance for Florida for 2 years now and decided to take out European Excess cover when we hired a car in Italy.
Basically, a cc swipe was made at the desk when we collected the car and nothing would have been debited had we returned the car in the same condition as when we picked it up
Unfortunately it got scraped, down the passengers side, whilst parked one evening (big Mondeo, tiny Italian streets........
)
Anyway, long story short, £900 was deducted from the cc
We had to get the relevant damage / repair details from the car company, police report etc and then claim back off the insurance.
It took a month to get everything together, during which time I transferred the cc balance on to a 0%, no fee charging card
The turnaround once insurance4carhire received the paperwork was less than a fortnight and was pretty painless.
I presume that it would work in the same way if you were to sustain damage in the US but I guess you'd be dealing with a much larger sum of money to be deducted
I'm not sure how things work if you take out the full cover with the rental company but I guess that you wouldn't have to pay anything and then have to claim it back?
As far as we were concerned we were more than happy with the claims procedure and took along a cc that is never, normally, used to be swiped.
Just thought I'd post though in case anyone was wondering
