Does your health insurance company cover circumcision for non-medical reasons?

In countries like Canada where there is socialized medicine, they do not pay for it. When Canada stopped covering circumcision, the rates dropped dramatically. The rates in the US are steadily dropping IMO due in part to private insurance companies not paying for it anymore.

Our insurance company does not cover it and according to the information I recieved for registration at the hospital for delivery, the cost would have been about $800. We did not circumcise DS, although not for that reason so it was a moot issue for us.

For those of you who DID choose to circumcise, did you pay out of pocket? When was this? Do you know if it has changed since then?

Also, does anyone know is public assistance healthcare in the United States pays for circumcision?

What are your thoughts? Should it be covered?

BCBS covered it 100%. I too would have paid for it out of pocket.

3 boys, 3 different insurance plans and all were covered 100%.

Our insurance covered it 100%. That was 15 months ago. We would have still done it if it wasn't covered.

We didnt have our son cut but it would NOT have been paid for by Blue Cross.

Two sons, both cut, both paid for 100% by BCBS. Left this parenting decision to DH, (we discussed in a major way, but I left the final decision to him) so would have paid for it ourselves if it wasn't covered.

Yes, both were 100% paid for, both in the last 6 1/2 years. I believe it had to have been in the first month of life to be covered.

Ours covered it for my son back in 1990. I don't know if it would be covered today or not.

When DS was born 7 years ago it wasn't covered by my insurance company (BC through DSHS) it was considered elective cosmetic surgery.

It's not covered by our ins. now, though our last two have been girls and had they been boys they wouldn't have been done anyway - don't want them to look different then DH and DS. :teeth:

DS6 and DS4 both had it done the day after they were born. Same hospital, same pediatrician, same insurance. It covered 100%, but we would have paid out of pocket..

I'm not trying to start something up, but now that you mentioned Rabbi....Does the Rabbi use any (local) kind of anesthetic? I can't imagine watching something like that....Although if it meant something to me religiously, I guess I would be ok...DH would be another story.::yes::

My son was circumcised and we never saw a bill for anything regarding his birth or hospital stay, including the circ. We paid the $15 copay at my first OB visit and that was it.
If we had to pay, we would have.

Both times it was covered by insurance as part of the maternity/delivery coverage. It was actually spelled out in the insurance coverage guide.
