ROFLMBO!!!!!! "buhdada" That one kills me! A friend of mine says "potato" that way and it's like nails on a chalkboard every time! :teeth:

By the way, I buy my POTATOES at "Shah's" (Shaw's) :p

Shaw's is way better than Stop and Shop. (aren't Shaw's and Star the same company now?)
My favorite is chowda and the word wicked. I use this word more than any other word in the English language. My best friend cringes every time I say it (she's in NH).

These are great! Thanks so much for posting. I havent seen this one before.
I love the Kahkis and Bah Rum!:)

I heard this one on a radio commercial:

"So don't I."

As in:
"I like going to Salisbury Beach for peetsa."
"Yeah, so don't I."

That's an odd one I always said, but never really thought about until I heard someone point out how odd it was.

I'm pretty sure there are a few different accents right around the Boston area. My parents and grandparents were born and raised in Southie. I lived in Quincy (the South Shore) until I was a teen. I think the accent from the North Shore of Boston is different, as well as from the west side.

It's difficult to write it phonetically but it's more like:
CAH TIN for carton
PAH DY for party
PAHTS for parts
HAHD for hard
We'd never say "boy" for "by". Maybe most of this is New Yawkas?
We don't say "ant" for "aunt" and we take a "bahth" not a "bath". We're very proper, you see.

We last went to Boston during the winter 2 years ago. We had a pissa time!

Ummmm, Montessori, I think you mean you

"Had a wicked pissa time" ;)

Hee hee hee.

I am a born and bred New Englander, but went to school in DC where I think the accent was beaten out of me ;)

In Boston

Bundles = bags full of groceries
Candlepins = bowling with little pins and little balls
cella = the basement
Quincy is pronounced QUIN zee
Worcester is WUH stah

I've been in Florida a long time now but every once in a while someone will say, "You're from Boston, aren't you?"
It sure is a unique accent!

I agree montessori, lots of that list sounded "Newy York" to me, not "Newinglin" ;) ;)

Maybe you can go to Stah Mahkit to git some buhdada jips and tawnik
CAH TIN for carton
PAH DY for party
PAHTS for parts
HAHD for hard

Toooooooooo funny!

Well, I'm headed down to Framingham where I grew up, in a few minutes ---Takin my mutha 'n fatha out for my mutha's birthday pahdy, my fatha has trouble gettin her wheelcheer into his cah. My aunt from Hyde Pahk might come too. :) ;)

Well, guess I killed this thread! ;)

The pahdy was wicked good though!

We left out one..... Nomah!!!!

( translation: Sox playah );)

Hey Ann,

It's a fun thread but no one's adding to it. I hope I didn't sound rude correcting the original poster but so many of those words were not New Englandy at all. I'm trying to think of some more but I'm distracted, scanning and downloading pitchas,THEN, I am going to attempt putting them in albums!
It's something that needs to be done every ten years or so.

Layta!

This is too funny, although I am not from Boston we visit there often. Some of our favourites are...
Stah Mahket
Cah
You know the regulars...

We have a "boston dictionary" and it is too funny!

I think the accent is great though.

There are some really funny comedians from Boston. I'm going to try to tell a joke one guy told on one of those Boston comedy shows on the Comedy Channel.
"I live in L.A. now and people are always noticing my accent and making remarks about it. They'll come up to me and say," So, do you pAHk the cAH in the HAHvud yAHd?"

I look at them and say, "What are ya, retAHded?"

laff.gif

rotflmbo...I know I do not sound like that. I don't have an accent everyone else does ;) :teeth:

Oh gawd you guys are making me wicked homesick.

So don't I

I never knew how weired that sounded, until I left Mass. That is so funny !!!!!

Montessori...thats was wicked funny!! I think I just found my favoritest thread!! :Pinkbounc

I used to do this in chat and get grief for it: someone will say something like

"I just won a trip to Disney!"

Me : "No suh!"

Them: "What?"

But if the were from north of Boston, this is the continued argument:

"Yessah."

"Nuh uhh."

"Yah hah!"

"Get out."

"I'm tellin ya I did."

Etc. Etc.

I met people before who never heard of 'dungarees.' Are they weird, or is it me?
